Aniversarios / Anniversaries (XXXVIII) [Octubre / October 5-11]

Durante este mes de octubre, sólo publicaré los aniversarios. Estos son los artistas para esta semana. /

El 5 de Octubre es el cumple de

Francesco Guardi, pintor de vedutte (paisajes) veneciano nacido en 1712. Está considerado entre los últimos practicantes, junto con sus hermanos, de la clásica escuela de pintura veneciana. Sus obras se caracterizan por colores expresivos y contornos esfumados.
Su padre Domenico (nacido en 1678) y sus hermanos (Niccolò y Gian Antonio) fueron también pintores. En 1735 Francesco pasó a trabajar en el taller de Michele Marieschi, donde permaneció hasta 1743. Sus primeras obras ciertas para una parroquia de Vigo d'Anuania, en el Trentino, datan de 1738. La primera obra firmada por Francesco es un Santo adorando la eucaristía (c.1739). En 1763 trabajó en Murano, en la iglesia de san Pedro Mártir. 
En sus últimos años la influencia de Canaletto en su arte disminuyó, como se muestra en la Piazzetta de la Ca' d'Oro de Venecia. Murió en Venecia en 1793.

Ralf Winkler, alias A. R. Penck, pintor, grabador y escultor alemán nacido en 1939. 
Nació en Dresde y estudió junto con un grupo de otros pintores neo-expresionistas. Se convirtió en uno de los máximos exponentes de la nueva figuración junto a Jörg Immendorff, Georg Baselitz y Markus Lüpertz. Bajo el régimen comunista de Alemania Oriental, fueron vigilados por la policía secreta y considerados disidentes. A finales de 1970 se incluyeron en muestras en Berlín Occidental y fueron vistos como exponentes de la libertad de expresión en el Este. Su obra ha sido expuesta en los principales museos y galerías en Occidente a lo largo de la década de 1980. Se incluyeron en una serie de importantes muestras, como la famosa exposición Zeitgeist en el conocido museo Martin Gropius Bau y la importante muestra nuevo arte en la Tate en 1983. 
En la década de 1980 llegó a ser conocido en todo el mundo por sus pinturas con imaginería neo-primitivista de figuras humanas y formas totémicas. Fue incluido en muchas muestras importantes tanto en Londres como en Nueva York.

Pablo Palazuelo, pintor, grabador y escultor español nacido en 1915 en Madrid. Fue una de las figuras clave del arte español de la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Más imágenes e información en el post previo.

El 7 de Octubre es el cumple de

Mark Jenkins, artista estadounidense nacido en 1970 en Alexandria (Virginia), ampliamente conocido por sus instalaciones callejeras utilizando cinta de embalaje. La práctica artística de Jenkins consiste en utilizar la "calle como escenario", donde sus esculturas interactúan con el entorno circundante incluyendo los paseantes, que se convierte en actores involuntarios. Sus instalaciones a veces llaman la atención de la policía.
Su trabajo ha sido descrito como caprichoso, macabro, surrealista, absurdo, impactante y "situacionista", más tarde referido como Situacionista Internacional. 
Jenkins ha citado a Juan Muñoz como su inspiración inicial, cuya exhibición retrospectiva vio en el Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden en 2002.
Además de crear arte, enseña sus técnicas escultóricas y prácticas de instalación en diversos talleres. Actualmente vive en Washington D.C.

Ramón Barba Guichard, escultor colombo-español nacido en 1892, que hizo revivir la talla en madera que se había abandonado en Colombia durante muchos años. Sus esculturas fueron de gran fuerza expresiva.
A los 13 años de edad ingresó a la Escuela de Artes y Oficios de Madrid y luego a la Escuela de Artes Decorativas, Central San Mateo, de Madrid.
Con el fin de independizarse y comenzar a hacer sus propios trabajos, viajó a México, Cuba y en 1925 llega a Colombia, donde se establece como escultor en la capital, Bogotá.
Fue uno de los colaboradores más entusiastas del grupo "Bachué" que buscaba la formación de un nacionalismo trascendental, y sobre todo la creación de un arte americano.
Murió en 1964.

El 8 de Octubre es el cumple de

Ozias Leduc, uno de los más tempranos pintores de Quebec (Canadá) nacido en 1864 en Saint-Hilaire-de-Rouville.
Leduc produjo muchos retratos, bodegones y paisajes, así como obras religiosas.
Fue principalmente autodidacta. Alrededor de 1880 trabajó con Luigi Cappello, un pintor italiano, en decoración de iglesias. Por el 1881 estuvo empleado en Carli, una empresa de estatuas en Montreal. Dos años más tarde trabajó con Adolphe Rho, decorando otra iglesia, ésta vez en Yamachiche, después de lo cual comenzó a trabajar por su cuenta decorando iglesias.
Hizo un breve viaje a París y Londres en 1897 con Suzor-Coté, donde recibió la influencia de algunos impresionistas.
Llevó una vida solitaria en su ciudad natal y fue apodado "El sabio de St. Hilaire". Recibió un doctorado honorario de la Universidad de Montreal en 1938 y fue miembro de la Real Academia Canadiense de las Artes. Murió en 1955.

Sir Hans Heysen, artista australiano nacido en Alemania en 1877. Se convirtió en un nombre muy conocido por sus acuarelas de los monumentales eucaliptos australianos. Heysen también produjo imágenes de hombres y animales laborando en la naturaleza australiana, así como innovadoras representaciones de paisajes áridos en el Flinders Ranges. Ganó el Premio Wynne de pintura de paisaje un récord de nueve veces.
Desde niño Heysen mostró un temprano interés en el arte. A los 14 años dejó la escuela para trabajar con un comerciante de ferretería, más tarde estudió arte durante las noches en la Escuela de Arte.
En 1912 Hans Heysen había ganado lo suficiente con su arte como para comprar una propiedad llamada "Los Cedros" cerca de Hahndorf en las colinas de Adelaida, que fue su casa hasta su muerte en 1968 a los 90 años.

El 9 de Octubre es el cumple de

Nikolái Konstantínovich Roerich (Николай Константинович Рерих), ilustre artista, filósofo, escritor, arqueólogo y viajero ruso nacido en 1874. Fue asimismo el creador de más de 7000 lienzos (muchos de los cuales se encuentran en galerías famosas por todo el mundo) y de más de 30 obras literarias. Es también autor de la idea e inspirador del Acuerdo Internacional sobre la protección de las instituciones artísticas, científicas y los monumentos históricos (Pacto Roerich) y fundador del movimiento internacional de protección de la cultura.
Desde edad temprana Nikolái Roerich demostró curiosidad y talento hacia una serie de actividades distintas: pintura, arqueología, historia y la rica herencia cultural del Oriente.
En 1897 se graduó de la Academia de Bellas Artes de San Petersburgo. Su encuentro con León Tolstói fue providencial para él.
En 1919 viajó a Escandinavia y más adelante realizó una larga expedición científica por Asia Central. Por lo complicado de la ruta y la riqueza de los materiales coleccionados, esta expedición merece un lugar especial entre las más grandes del siglo XX. En julio de 1928 en el Himalaya Occidental, en el valle de Kulu, Nicolás Roerich fundó el Instituto «Urusvati» de Investigaciones Himalaicas. En los años 1934-1935 encabezó una expedición a las regiones de la Mongolia Interior, Manchuria y China. Murió en 1947.

Lucy Tejada Sáenz, artista colombiana nacida en 1920 que vivió muchos años en Cali.
Estudio su bachillerato en el Liceo Benalcázar. Tras la muerte de su madre, Lucy se trasladó a Bogotá a estudiar en la Universidad Javeriana Arte y Decoración, y de ahí pasó a la Escuela de Bellas Artes donde se graduó y conoció al también pintor Antonio Valencia, que más tarde sería su esposo.
En el año 1947 realizó su primera exposición. En los '50 viajó durante cinco años por Europa viviendo en Madrid, París y Bucarest. Allí descubrió los grandes museos del mundo y reafirmó su pasión por la plástica.
Murió en 2011.

El 10 de Octubre es el cumple de

Lambert Sigisbert Adam, escultor francés nacido en Nancy en 1700. 
Hijo del escultor Jacob Sigisbert Adam de Nancy, Lambert Sigisbert Adam fue el mayor de tres hermanos que fueron todos escultores. Fue formado por su padre en Metz y pasó diez años en la Academia Francesa en Roma. Obtuvo el gran premio de escultura en 1723.

Fue protegido por el cardenal Melchior de Polignac, embajador de Francia ante la Santa Sede, para quien copia o restaura estatuas antiguas, entre ellas doce estatuas encontradas en la llamada villa de Marius. También fue elegido miembro de la Academia de San Lucas en 1732.

Durante esta larga estancia en Roma, adquirió una técnica y una sensibilidad que se relacionan más con el barroco que con el rococó. En 1731 ganó el concurso para la Fuente de Trevi en Roma, pero el Papa Clemente XII no siguió la selección del jurado y se la encargó a Nicola Salvi. Murió en 1759.

Alberto Giacometti, escultor, pintor, dibujante y grabador suizo nacido en 1901. 
Provenía de un entorno artístico; su padre, Giovanni, era un conocido pintor post-impresionista. Alberto era el mayor de cuatro hijos y estuvo interesado en el arte desde muy jóven. 
En 1922 se trasladó a París, Francia, para estudiar con el escultor Antoine Bourdelle, un asociado de Auguste Rodin. Fue allí donde Giacometti experimentó con el cubismo y el surrealismo, y llegó a ser considerado como uno de los principales escultores surrealistas. 
En 1962 fue galardonado con el gran premio de escultura en la Bienal de Venecia, y el premio trajo consigo la fama en todo el mundo. Aun cuando había alcanzado popularidad y su trabajo era demandado, continuó reelaborado modelos, a menudo destruyéndolos o dejándolos de lado para volver sobre ellos años más tarde. 
Murió en 1966.

Hoy, 11 de Octubre, es el cumple de

Edgar Negret Dueñas, escultor abstracto colombiano nacido en Popayán en 1920. Junto con Hugo Martínez González y Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar introdujo la escultura abstraccionista y geomética en Colombia a mediados del siglo XX. Su obra se caracteriza por un amplio uso del hierro y el aluminio como material estructural y formal, uniendo sus láminas y partes mediante tuercas y tornillos, por el uso de elementos geométricos y por el rigor compositivo. Existen varias esculturas suyas en el espacio público de Bogotá y de Medellín.
Estudió en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Cali entre 1938 y 1943. Al año siguiente, conoció en su ciudad natal al escultor vasco Jorge Oteiza, quien lo puso al tanto de la escultura moderna. A fines de 1948 Negret efectuó su primer viaje a Nueva York. Allí, a más de algunas cerámicas biomórficas, realizó sus primeras construcciones.
Murió en 2012 en Bogotá.

James Barry, pintor irlandés nacido en 1741, recordado por sus series de pinturas en 6 partes tituladas "El progreso de la cultura humana" en el Gran Salón de la Royal Society of Arts. Debido a su determinación para crear arte de acuerdo a sus propios principios, en lugar de los de sus mecenas, también se destaca por ser uno de los primeros pintores románticos que trabajaron en Bretaña, aún cuando como artista no fue tenido en alta consideración hasta que la exposición de 1983 en la Tate Gallery condujo a resituarlo como una "personalidad notoriamente beligerante", que emergió como uno de los más importantes artistas irlandeses neoclásicos. Fue también una profunda influencia para William Blake.
Murió en 1806.

On October 5 is the birthday of

Francesco Guardi, Venetian painter of vedutte (landscapes) born in 1712. He's Considered among the last practitioners, along with his brothers, of the classic Venetian school of painting. His works are characterized by expressive colors and hazy outlines. 
His father Domenico (born in 1678) and his brothers (Niccolò and Gian Antonio) were also painters. In 1735 Francesco went to work in the workshop of Michele Marieschi, where he remained until 1743. His first true works for a parish at Vigo d'Anuania, in Trentino, date from 1738. The first work signed by Francesco is a Saint worshiping the Eucharist (c.1739). In 1763 he worked in Murano, in the church of St. Peter Martyr. 
In his later years, Canaletto's influence on his art diminished, as shown in the Piazzetta of the Ca 'd'Oro of Venice. He died in Venice in 1793.

Ralf Winkler, alias A.R. Penck, German painter, printmaker and sculptor born in 1939.
He was born in Dresden and studied together with a group of other neo-expressionist painters. He became one of the foremost exponents of the new figuration alongside Jörg Immendorff, Georg Baselitz and Markus Lüpertz. Under the East German communist regime, they were watched by the secret police and were considered dissidents. In the late 1970s they were included in shows in West Berlin and were seen as exponents of free speech in the East. Their work was shown by major museums and galleries in the West throughout the 1980s. They were included in a number of important shows including the famous Zeitgeist exhibition in the well-known Martin Gropius Bau museum and the important New Art show at the Tate in 1983.
In the 1980s he became known worldwide for paintings with pictographic, neo-primitivist imagery of human figures and other totemic forms. He was included in many important shows both in London and New York.

On October 6 is the birthday of

Pablo Palazuelo, Spanish painter, engraver and sculptor born in 1915 in Madrid. He was one of the key figures of Spanish art in the second half of the twentieth century. More images and information in the previous post.

On October 7 is the birthday of

Mark Jenkins, American artist born in 1970 in Alexandria (Virginia), widely known for his street installations using tape. Jenkins's art practice is to use the "street as a stage" where his sculptures interact with the surrounding environment including walkers, that becomes involuntary actors. His installations sometimes call the attention of the police. 
His work has been described as whimsical, macabre, surreal, absurd, shocking and "situationist", later referred to as the International Situationist. 
Jenkins has cited Juan Muñoz as his initial inspiration, whose retrospective exhibition saw in the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in 2002. 
In addition to creating art, teaches sculptural installation techniques and practices in various workshops. Currently lives in Washington D.C.

Ramon Barba Guichard, Colombian-Spanish sculptor born in 1892, who revived woodcarving that had been abandoned for many years in Colombia. His sculptures were highly expressive. 
At 13 years old he entered the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid and then at the School of Decorative Arts, Central San Mateo, Madrid. 
In order to become independent and start doing his own work, traveled to Mexico, Cuba, and in 1925 reaches Colombia, where he stablished as a sculptor in the capital, Bogota. 
He was one of the most enthusiastic collaborators of the group "Bachué" seeking the formation of a transcendental nationalism, especially the creation of an American Art.

On October 8 is the birthday of

Ozias Leduc, one of the earliest painters of Quebec (Canada) born in 1864 in Saint-Hilaire-de-Rouville. 
Leduc produced many portraits, still lifes and landscapes, as well as religious works. 
He was mainly self-taught. Around 1880 he worked with Luigi Cappello, an Italian painter, in decoration of churches. By 1881 he was employed by Carli, a company of statues in Montreal. Two years later worked with Adolphe Rho decorating another church, this time in Yamachiche, after which he began working on his own decorating churches. 
He made a brief trip to Paris and London with Suzor-Coté 1897, where he was influenced by some impressionists. 
He led a solitary life in his hometown and was dubbed "St. Hilaire Sage". 
He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Montreal in 1938 and was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. He died in 1955.

Sir Hans Heysen, German-born (1877) Australian artist. He became a household name for his watercolours of monumental Australian gum trees. Heysen also produced images of men and animals toiling in the Australian bush, as well as groundbreaking depictions of arid landscapes in the Flinders Ranges. He won the Wynne Prize for landscape painting a record nine times.
As a young boy Heysen showed an early interest in art. At 14 he left school to work with a hardware merchant, later studying art during nights at Art School in his spare time.
In 1912 Hans Heysen had earned enough from his art to purchase a property called "The Cedars" near Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills, which remained as his home until his death in 1968 aged 90.

Nikolai Konstantinovich Roerich (Николай Константинович Рерих), prominent Russian artist, philosopher, writer, archaeologist and traveler born in 1874. He was also the creator of over 7,000 paintings (many of which are in famous galleries around the world) and over 30 literary works, is also the author of the idea and inspiration of the International Agreement on the protection of artistic, scientific and historical monuments (Roerich Pact) and a founder of an international movement for the protection of cultural institutions.

On October 10 is the birthday of

Adam Lambert Sigisbert, French sculptor born in Nancy in 1700. 
Son of sculptor Jacob Sigisbert Adam de Nancy, Lambert Sigisbert was the oldest of three brothers who were all sculptors. He was trained by his father in Metz and spent ten years at the French Academy in Rome. He won the grand prize for sculpture in 1723. 
He was protected by the Cardinal Melchior de Polignac, the French ambassador to the Holy See, for whom copied or restoring ancient statues, including twelve statues found in the villa called Marius. He was also elected to the Academy of St. Luke in 1732. 
During this long stay in Rome, he acquired a technical and a sensitivity related more with the Baroque than the Rococo. In 1731 he won the competition for the Trevi Fountain in Rome, but Pope Clement XII did not follow jury selection and was commissioned to Nicola Salvi. Lambert died in 1759.

Alberto Giacometti, Swiss sculptor, painter, draughtsman, and printmaker born in 1901. 
He and came from an artistic background; his father, Giovanni, was a well-known post-Impressionist painter. Alberto was the eldest of four children and was interested in art from an early age.
In 1922 he moved to Paris, France, to study under the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle, an associate of Auguste Rodin. It was there that Giacometti experimented with cubism and surrealism and came to be regarded as one of the leading surrealist sculptors.
In 1962, Giacometti was awarded the grand prize for sculpture at the Venice Biennale, and the award brought with it worldwide fame. Even when he had achieved popularity and his work was in demand, he still reworked models, often destroying them or setting them aside to be returned to years later.
He died in 1966.

Today, October 11, is the birthday of

Edgar Negret Dueñas, Colombian abstract sculptor born in Popayán in 1920. Along with Hugo Martínez González and Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar introduced and geomética abstractionist sculpture in Colombia in the mid-twentieth century. His work is characterized by an extensive use of iron and aluminum as a structural and formal materials, joining sheets and parts using nuts and bolts, for the use of geometric elements and its compositional rigor. Several of his sculptures are in public space of Bogotá and Medellín. 
He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Cali between 1938 and 1943. The following year, he met in his hometown Basque sculptor Jorge Oteiza, who put him on top of modern sculpture. In late 1948 Negret made his first trip to New York. There, more than some biomorphic ceramics, made their first buildings. 
He died in 2012 in Bogotá.

James Barry, Irish painter born in 1741, best remembered for his six part series of paintings entitled The Progress of Human Culture in the Great Room of the Royal Society of Arts. Because of his determination to create art according to his own principles rather than those of his patrons, he is also noted for being one of the earliest romantic painters working in Britain, though as an artist few rated him highly until the fully comprehensive 1983 exhibition at the Tate Gallery led to a reassessment of this "notoriously belligerent personality", who emerges as one of the most important Irish Neoclassical artists. He was also a profound influence on William Blake.
He died in 1806.
