On March 22 is the birthday of

Anton Raphael Mengs, German Bohemian painter born in 1728, active in Rome, Madrid and Saxony, who became one of the precursors to Neoclassical painting.
In 1741 Mengs's father took him from Dresden to Rome. In Rome, his fresco painting of Parnassus at Villa Albani gained him a reputation as a master painter. In 1749 he was appointed first painter to Frederick Augustus, elector of Saxony, but this did not prevent him from spending much of his time in Rome.
In 1749 Mengs accepted a commission from the Duke of Northumberland to make a copy, in oil on canvas, of Raphael's fresco The School of Athens for his London home. Executed in 1752–5, Mengs' painting is full-sized, but adapts the composition to a rectangular format, with some additional figures.
On two occasions he accepted invitations from Charles III of Spain to go to Madrid. There he produced some of his best work, most notably the ceiling of the banqueting hall of the Royal Palace of Madrid, the subject of which was the Triumph of Trajan and the Temple of Glory. After the completion of this work in 1777, Mengs returned to Rome, where he died two years later, in poor circumstances, leaving twenty children, seven of whom were pensioned by the king of Spain. His portraits and self-portraits recall an attention to detail and insight often lost in his grander paintings.

On March 23 is the birthday of

Joseph Christian Leyendecker, one of the preeminent American illustrators of the early 20th century.
He was born in 1874 and is best known for his poster, book and advertising illustrations, the trade character known as The Arrow Collar Man, and his numerous covers for The Saturday Evening Post. Between 1896 and 1950, Leyendecker painted more than 400 magazine covers. During the Golden Age of American Illustration, for The Saturday Evening Post alone, J. C. Leyendecker produced 322 covers, as well as many advertisement illustrations for its interior pages. No other artist, until the arrival of Norman Rockwell two decades later, was so solidly identified with one publication. Leyendecker "virtually invented the whole idea of modern magazine design."
He died in 1951.

On March 24 is the birthday of

Jorge González Camarena, prominent Mexican painter, muralist and sculptor born in 1908.
He is best known for his mural work, as part of the Mexican muralism movement, although his work is distinct from the main names associated with it (Rivera, Orozco and Siqueiros). His major works include the mural on the main administration building of the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Studies and a mural created for the Universidad de Concepción in Chile. He also created easel works, one of which, La Patria, was well known in Mexico as it was used on the cover of free textbooks from the 1960s into the 1970s. Recognitions for his work include the Premio Nacional de Arte, membership in the Academia de Artes and the Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana, grade Commendatore from the Italian government.
He died in 1980.

On March 25 is the birthday of

Pedro Coronel, Mexican sculptor and painter born in 1922, part of the Generación de la Ruptura, bringing innovation into Mexican art in the mid 20th century. Coronel’s training was with artists of the Mexican muralism tradition, with influence from artists like Diego Rivera. This influence remained with the use of pre Hispanic themes and colors in his work. However, his artistic trajectory took him towards more use of color and more abstract forms in his work, due to influences from artists such as Rufino Tamayo. His work was exhibited and gained recognition in Mexico, the United States and Europe. Shortly before his death, he donated his considerable personal art collection to the people of Mexico, which was used to open the Museo Pedro Coronel in the city of Zacatecas.
He died in 1985.

On March 26 is the birthday of

Li Keran (李可染), painter and art educator born in 1907, who was a prominent figure in 20th-century Chinese art. He developed a personal style of landscape painting that was based upon the emulation of both ancient and contemporary masters.
Li showed a gift for painting, calligraphy, and music as a child. When he was 13, he began to study landscape painting with a local painter. In 1923 he entered the Shanghai Art College, studying both traditional Chinese painting and Western art. It was during this period that Li attended three lectures given by Kang Youwei (康有為), who advocated learning from both Song academic painting and from the realistic tradition of the European Renaissance. Kang’s ideal of merging Eastern and Western art to create a new century in Chinese painting inspired Li greatly and became his lifelong pursuit.
He died in 1989.

On March 27 is the birthday of

Pierre-Albert Marquet, French painter born in 1875, associated with the Fauvist movement. He initially became one of the Fauve painters and a lifelong friend of Henri Matisse. Marquet subsequently painted in a more naturalistic style, primarily landscapes, but also several portraits and, between 1910 and 1914, several female nude paintings.
In 1890 he moved to Paris to attend the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs, where he met Henri Matisse. They were roommates for a time, and they influenced each other's work. Marquet began studies in 1892 at the École des Beaux-Arts under Gustave Moreau, a symbolist artist who was a follower of the Romantic tradition of Eugène Delacroix.
In 1905 he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne where his paintings were put together with those of Henri Matisse, Maurice de Vlaminck, André Derain, Othon Friesz, Georges Rouault, Raoul Dufy, Henri Manguin, Georges Braque, Louis Valtat, Georges Dufrénoy and Jean Puy.
Dismayed by the intense coloration in these paintings, critics reacted by naming the artists the "Fauves", i.e. the wild beasts. Although Marquet painted with the fauves for years, he used less bright and violent colours than the others, and emphasized less intense tones made by mixing complementaries, thus always as colors and never as grays.
Marquet subsequently painted in a more naturalistic style, primarily landscapes.
He died in 1947.

Today, March 28, is the birthday of

Shaban Hadëri, Albanian sculptor born in 1928.
He completed his primary education at Kopaçes. After the Italian invasion of Albania, the family moved to Delvina. In 1944 he joined the army, being the messenger of the 14th Brigade foreign (Brigaden and 14-të Sulmuese).
After the war he moved to Tirana where was student of Nexhmedin Zani at the technical school, and later studied sculpture at the School of Arts Jordan Misja (1946-1950). He was a student of Odhise Paskali.
He then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Leningrad (1953-1958). In that period he made the work Three Heroes, which was later moved to Moscow.
Later he taught for two years at the Lyceum and after the opening of the Superior Institute of Art in Tirana, was there a professor of monumental sculpture.
Hadëri soon established himself as a sculptor in the style called socialist realism.
Inspired primarily by the events of World War II, captured the heroism of the partisans in some symbolic monuments such as the 5 Heroes of Vig in Shkodër.
He died in 2010.

On March 29 is the birthday of

Benjamín Franklin Rawson, Argentine painter born in 1819 or 1820, who belonged to the first generation of Argentine painters called the "precursors". His best known works are the Assassination of Manuel Vicente Maza and Rescue in the Cordillera.
He first studied with Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, his lifelong friend. He then started to paint, taught by Amadeo Gras and Pierre Douet.
Later, Rawson was part of the San Juan plastic movement promoted by the Philharmonic Dramatic Society, which had been created by Sarmiento. When he turned eighteen years old, his father sent him to Buenos Aires, where he was a pupil of Fernando García del Molino, under whom he perfected portrait and miniature painting. In 1838 he made his self-portrait.
After studying in Buenos Aires, Rawson returned to San Juan. However, due to the political conflicts that erupted in the province and his friendship with Sarmiento he was forced to leave the country in 1842, taking refuge in Chile.
He returned to San Juan in the same year and was elected a provincial deputy. However, he resigned and moved back to Buenos Aires, where he continued his studies with Martín Boneo.
His importance began to decline due to the appearance of the daguerreotype or early photography that competed with the portrait.
He died in 1871.

On March 30 is the birthday of

Fortunato Depero, Italian futurist painter, writer, sculptor and graphic designer born in 1892.
Depero grew up in Rovereto and it was here he first began exhibiting his works, while serving as an apprentice to a marble worker. It was on a 1913 trip to Florence that he discovered a copy of the paper Lacerba and an article by one of the founders of the futurism movement, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. Depero was inspired, and in 1914 moved to Rome and met fellow futurist Giacomo Balla. It was with Balla in 1915 that he wrote the manifesto Ricostruzione futurista dell’universo ("Futurist Reconstruction of the Universe") which expanded upon the ideas introduced by the other futurists.
In 1919 Depero founded the "Casa d'Arte Futurista" (House of Futurist Art) in Rovereto.
1928 saw Depero move to New York City, where he experienced a degree of success.
In the 1930s and 40s Depero continued working, although due to futurism being linked with fascism, the movement started to wane. The artistic development of the movement in this period can mostly be attributed to him and Balla.
He died in 1960.

On March 31 is the birthday of

William Morris Hunt, American painter born 1824 in Brattleboro, Vermont. He was the leading painter of mid-19th-century Boston, Massachusetts.
Hunt studied with Couture in Paris and then came under the influence of Jean-François Millet, from whom he learned the principles of the Barbizon school. The Hunt family remained in Europe for a dozen years.
After leaving Paris, he painted and established art schools at Newport, Rhode Island, where he had relatives, Brattleboro, Vermont, Faial Island in the Azores, where he had family connections and finally at Boston, where he painted, taught art and became a popular portrait painter.
The companionship of Millet had a lasting influence on Hunt's character and style, and his work grew in strength, in beauty and in seriousness. He was among the biggest proponents of the Barbizon school in America.
William Morris Hunt died at the Isles of Shoals, New Hampshire, in 1879, apparently a suicide.
