Manos a la obra / Let's get down to work (XXVIII) - von Foerster, Wittfooth

Madeline von Foerster
(San Francisco, California, EE.UU./ CA, USA, 1973-)

Madeline von Foerster is a remarkable American artist. I published more than once about her in this blog. I refer to the previous posts (here and here) for more images and information.
Photographer Oliver Wachenfeld, old friend of Madeline, has made a photo series that shows the work process of her "Orchid Cabinet" from beginning to end - sketches, underpainting, and final painting. An excellent document that allows us to take a look at the meticulous work of the artist. Here some images; full series here

«These photos are meant to illuminate my painting process, but are NOT a how-to! The mische technique cannot be demonstrated on the internet -- you must learn it hands on. If you are intrigued, I can enthusiastically recommend the seminars of my teacher, Philip Rubinov Jacobson. He taught me everything I know about this incredible method, which I have now used for over fifty paintings.»

«This painting depicts nine orchid species, and three beetle species, which are threatened with extinction due to over-collection from their native habitat. Every minute of every day, exotic plants and animals are smuggled through the world's airports to buyers around the globe, disrupting and depleting native ecosystems. The complexity of this crisis is compounded by the fact that many orchid collectors ascertain that they are rescuing plants, since so many of our rainforests and other orchid habitats are all being destroyed. They may have a point, but I still feel the need to memorialize what is lost, when we try to confine all the beauty of a rainforest into a shipping crate. Here is my homage to twelve of those species.»
