"Lluvia / Rain", xilografía sobre papel / woodblock print on paper, 46,5 x 30,3 cm., 1929
Walters Art Museum (Baltimore, EE.UU./ USA)

"Zur Hälfte nach / La mitad de / Half of Boucher", litografía a color / color lithograph, 1980. Flickr

"Autumno II / Otoño II / Autumn II", litografía a color / color lithograph, 1987. Art Propelled

"Emilio Carreras", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 97 x 62 cm., s.XIX

"Romería del Rocío / Pilgrimage of El Rocio", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 375 x 670 cm., c.1897

"Grab Eva / Gran Eva / Big Eva", bronce / bronze, tamaño natural / lifesize, 2010

"Grab Eva / Gran Eva / Big Eva" (detalle / detail)

On November 19 is the birthday of

Dorothy Hawksley, British artist born in 1884 in London.
She was the daughter of a maker of surgical instruments with an interest in the work of John Ruskin. Her maternal grandfather had been a painter of marine pictures and therefore she did not face any parental opposition when she showed signs of wanting to become a painter. Her formative schooling in drawing was at a small art school run by the watercolour painter Edward Clifford and Charles Orchardson (son of William Quiller Orchardson). She saw the Burne-Jones memorial exhibition in 1898 and as Clifford had been a friend of Burne-Jones it is likely that they had discussed his work. Her art certainly shows something of an influence from the pale maidens of Burne-Jones. She later attended Clifford and Orchardson's classes at the St. John's Wood Art School after they moved there, before she progressed to the Royal Academy Schools in 1906. She was awarded a silver medal for a drawing from life and the Landseer Scholarship in 1908. She began to exhibit at the Royal Academy in 1909 and continued to show there almost every year until 1964. Although Dorothy Hawksley worked in various media, her most successful works were painted in watercolour and tempera with large areas of flat colour and unshaded tone contained within refined outlines. These were influenced by Japanese prints and by the work of her friend Frederic Cayley Robinson.
She died in 1970.

On November 20 is the birthday of

Paulus Potter, Dutch painter born in 1625 in Enkhuizen, who specialized in animals within landscapes, usually with a low vantage point.
He was baptized on November 20. In 1628 his family moved to Leiden, and in 1631 to Amsterdam, where young Paulus studied painting with his father, Pieter Symonsz Potter.
Potter became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in Delft, but by 1649, Paulus moved to The Hague, next to Jan van Goyen. Potter married in the Hague and his father-in-law, who was the leading building contractor in the Hague, introduced him to the Dutch elite. Amalia of Solms-Braunfels, a member of the stadholder's family and an art-lover, bought a painting with a pissing cow, but some court ladies seemed to have advised against it. By May 1652 he returned to Amsterdam. Potter was invited by Nicolaes Tulp, who was impressed by his civilized behavior and politeness.
Paulus painted a self-portrait which was at Hackwood Park, Hampshire until 1998. It is now at Elibank House, Buckinghamshire.
His most famous painting not to be confused with his work "The Bull" is The Young Bull (circa 1647), that is now in Mauritshuis in The Hague, composed after drawings Potter made in nature. Though this painting was criticized, it was greatly admired during the 19th century as an early example of Romanticism. The Young Bull features as the canvas being studied in Mark Tansey's 1981 monochromatic oil on canvas The Innocent Eye Test.
He died of tuberculosis at the age of 28, in 1654.

On November 21 is the birthday of

Torii Kotondo (鳥居 言人) or Torii Kiyotada V (五代目 鳥居 清忠), Japanese artist of the Torii school of ukiyo-e artists, born Saitō Akira (斎藤 信) in the Nihonbashi district of Tokyo.
Torii Kiyotada IV (ja), the seventh head of the Torii school of ukiyo-e artists, adopted Kotondo at age 15 and trained him in the school's specialty producing portraits of kabuki actors. Kotondo studied painting under the yamato-e painter Kobori Tomone (ja) from 1914 and under Kiyokata Kaburagi from 1918. Most of Kotondo's woodblock prints date from 1927 to 1933.
Authorities considered Kotondo's print Morning Hair of 1930 provocative and banned it after seventy of its hundred copies had sold and had the remaining thirty destroyed. When Kiyotada died in 1941 Kotondo became the eighth head of the school and took the name Kiyotada V.
Kotondo lectured at Nihon University in Tokyo from 1966 to 1972. Collectors did not place high value on Kotondo's prints while he was alive; the prints have since appreciated in collectability and fetch prices comparable to those of the great masters.
He died in 1976.

On November 22 is the birthday of

Bruno Bruni senior, Italian lithographer, graphic artist, painter and sculptor, born in Gradara in 1935.
Bruni started painting as a young boy. He was initially a pupil of Giuliano Vanghi. From 1953 to 1959 he attended the Art Institute in Pesaro, then moved to London, where he became interested in pop art. In 1960, after an exhibit of his work at London's John Whibley Gallery, and after meeting a girl from Hamburg, he moved there to live with her and enrolled at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg. He has lived in the city ever since and visits his hometown regularly.
In the 1970s, Bruno Bruni made a name for himself as a draftsman, lithographer, painter and sculptor in the international art world. In 1977, he won the International Senefeld Competition for Lithography. He is influenced primarily by German expressionists like Otto Dix, George Grosz etc. and the Italian old masters. In particular, he is noted as one of the few lithographic artists "who paint all work directly onto the stone". He is especially known for his erotic female forms. He has said, "I cannot paint an abstract picture. If I had gone along with the trends I'd have disappeared long ago". He resides in a converted swimming pool, more than a century old, which serves as apartment, workplace and gallery. He sells his art through his wife's gallery in Hanover and is reputedly one of Germany's top earning artists. He is also a keen cook of Italian cuisine, and is a boxing fan and a close friend of former boxing champion Dariusz Michalczewski, for whom he used to cook for before matches. He has also cooked for Gerhard Schröder and has published a cooking book with his favourite recipes, memoirs and pictures related to his life.

On November 23 is the birthday of

Salvador Viniegra y Lasso de la Vega, Spanish historical painter and patron of the arts, born in Cádiz in 1862.
He began studying law but soon decided to be a painter and entered the Escuela de Bellas Artes de Cádiz, where he was taught by Rámon Rodríguez Barcaza and José Pérez Jiménez. He concentrated initially on painting watercolors, and a series of works in that genre, which grew eventually into an album, earned him his first taste of public success, in 1877. In the following years, he won various painting prizes at regional exhibitions and traveled to Rome, where he devoted himself to the study of life drawing.
Returning to Spain in 1882, he competed that same year in the Exposición de Hernandéz, submitting the painting Un patio de Sevilla as his entry. Later, another work of large proportions, La bendición de los campos en 1800, was exhibited at the Exposición Nacional de Madrid in 1887 and received the first prize in its category.
In 1890, he won a merit scholarship to study at the Academia Española de Bellas Artes in Rome where he resided until November 1896, and this Italian period marked the richest in his vast oeuvre. Displayed in Munich, Rome, and Budapest, his works were reproduced ceaselessly, making him one of the most popular painters in Europe. In 1897, La romería del Rocío was exhibited at the Sala Dante de Roma and at the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes de Madrid. It also appeared at the World's Fairs in 1898 in Munich and Vienna, where it won several gold medals. The painting continued its international tour when a Polish dealer agreed to exhibit it in various cities in Eastern Europe. Viniegra finally donated it to the Museo de Arte Moderno in Madrid in 1905.
Settling in Madrid, Viniegra was named the deputy director and conservator of the city's Prado museum in 1898. During this time, he became an important patron of the arts. Being a notable cellist himself, he gave particular support to musicians, among his beneficiaries being the composer Manuel de Falla and the cellist and conductor Juan Ruiz Casaux.
He died in 1915.

On November 24 is the birthday of

Thomas Reichstein, German sculptor born in 1960 in Halle/Saale.
Starting as a gardener, he studied landscape architecture at the university in Dresden TU in Dresden from 1982 till 1984. After this he studied fine arts in the sculptor section of the art school in Dresden Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden. His teacher was professor Klaus Schwabe. He got his diploma in 1990.
He became a freelance sculptor in Dresden. From 1992 until 1997 he went to Ghana for three months every year to a brass casting village near Kumasi. Applying the lost wax technique, he produced small abstract and ornamental figures. These objects made him well known in Saxony.
In 1995 he started a workshop with the woodcarvers in Neuireland, an island of Papua. He learned to carve mangrove wood in the Malanggan style. One year later he went to Oro province in Papua. He made tapa cloth from the bark of a tropical mulberry tree. With this material and rattan sticks from Vietnam he created his Rattan-Tapa sculptures. He showed them for the first time in the ethnographic museum in Dresden.
As a result Thomas Reichstein developed a special type of rattan bark cloth – sculptures. In 1997 he won a competition for the Semperoper Dresden for a yearly given award-sculpture. His idea impressed the jury with the balance of abstraction and reality.
From 1 January 1998 to 31 December 1998 he taught in the Saxon stonemason school in Demitz – Thumitz. He developed the stonework there specific technical basics of design and taught inter alia freehand drawing, sketching and modeling to nature. Since 1999, Thomas Reichstein operates several months a year in a Buddhafoundry in Ban Pong in Thailand. From 1999 to 2005 he created here a rich series of abstract sculptures. Since 2006 he worked there with the German artist Doreen Wolff and since 2010 even with Catrin Große.
Since 2006, Thomas Reichstein used again reinforces the human figure to. So he created, for example, in 2009 a group of Nereids – the nymphs from the Mediterranean sea, inspired by classical Greek models from the British Museum in London.
Since 2010 he begins a new convolute from life-sized bronze figures, which has grown by 2013 to 25 works. These develop from creations in statuesque appeal to Lucas Cranach the Elder, to freely moving, dance and expressive representations.

Today, November 25, is the birthday of

Chua Mia Tee (蔡明智), Chinese-born (Guangdong province, 1931) Singaporean painter.
In 1931 he moved to Singapore when he was just 6 years old. He is widely regarded as one of Singapore’s foremost realist painters. He is best known for his oil paintings that depict Singapore’s vanishing traditional urban landscape. He is also a much sought-after portrait artist who has painted several prominent businessmen and politicians in Singapore, including Singapore’s past and present presidents.
Chua draws his inspiration and subjects from the world around him. He spent his boyhood in Chinatown and around the Singapore River, so many of Chua’s early works depict the traditional landscapes and life in Singapore that is gradually disappearing under urban re-development.
Chua Mia Tee is a versatile painter. He is able to convey the feelings of nostalgia and reminiscence beautifully, whether making use of the fluidity of oil paints or expressive lines of charcoal.
His paintings are exhibited in the National Gallery Singapore.
