"Costo-beneficio / Cost-Benefit", óleo sobre tela / oil on canvas, 1986.

"La cabeza / The Head", pastel seco y lapiz sobre tela / dry pastel and pencil on canvas, 50 x 40 cm.

"La gallina obstinada / The Obstinate Hen"
Aguafuerte y aguatinta / etching and aquatint, 28,5 x 37,9 cm., 1958. Roe+Moore

"Encuentro urbano / Urban Encounter", óleo sobre panel / oil on board, 136 x 136 cm. Australian Art Auction Records

"Viaje costero / Coastal Trip", óleo / oil, 29,5 x 44,5 cm. Australian Art Auction Records

"Mirando escaparates / Window Shopping", técnica mixta / mixed media, 56 x 74 cm. Australian Art Auction Records

"Buitre estatal / State Vulture", bronce / bronze, Parque del Oeste (Málaga, España / Spain)

"Les Odalisques / Las odaliscas / The Odalisques", 1903. Wikimedia Commons

"El pequeño poeta / The Little Poet"

"El lavador de alas / The Wingwasher", acrílico y óleo / acrylic and oil, 140×140 cm., 2008. Yngvil Birkeland

On October 11 is the birthday of

Anton Räderscheidt, German painter born in Cologne in 1892, who was a leading figure of the New Objectivity.
From 1910 to 1914, Räderscheidt studied at the Academy of Düsseldorf. He was severely wounded in the First World War, during which he fought at Verdun. After the war he returned to Cologne, where in 1919 he cofounded the artists' group Stupid with other members of the local constructivist and Dada scene. The group was short-lived, as Räderscheidt was by 1920 abandoning constructivism for a magic realist style. In 1925 he participated in the Neue Sachlichkeit ("New Objectivity") exhibition at the Mannheim Kunsthalle.
Many of the works Räderscheidt produced in the 1920s depict a stiffly posed, isolated couple that usually bear the features of Räderscheidt and his wife, the painter Marta Hegemann. The influence of metaphysical art is apparent in the way the mannequin-like figures stand detached from their environment and from each other. A pervasive theme is the incompatibility of the sexes, according to the art historian Dennis Crockett. Few of Räderscheidt's works from this era survive, because most of them were either seized by the Nazis as degenerate art and destroyed, or were destroyed in Allied bombing raids.
In 1934 - 1935 he lived in Berlin. He fled to France in 1936, and settled in Paris, where his work became more colorful, curvilinear and rhythmic. He was interned by the occupation authorities in 1940, but he escaped to Switzerland. In 1949 he returned to Cologne and resumed his work, producing many paintings of horses shortly before adopting an abstract style in 1957.
Räderscheidt was to return to the themes of his earlier work in some of his paintings of the 1960s. After suffering a stroke in 1967, he had to relearn the act of painting. He produced a penetrating series of self-portraits in gouache in the final years of his life.
He died in 1970.

On October 12 is the birthday of

Ricardo Yrarrázaval Larraín, Chilean painter and ceramist born in 1931 in Santiago. The central theme of his work is man and his status in society.
After enrolling on a ship bound for Egypt, traveled to Naples and Rome, where he entered the School of Fine Arts to study painting. Later he left the Italian capital and went to France to finally settle in Vallauris, a small village on the Riviera, where Picasso had also resided. There he became acquainted with the techniques of pottery, an activity that was spent for several years and it has never completely abandoned.
His pictorial production is low but intense. After some abstract experiences, in which he played with geometric shapes that were composing vertical frames, in the 1970s his work became surrealistic and began painting in a style called subjective realism and which would later evolve. The characters in his paintings are figures of flat volumes and distorted shapes that represent archetypes of modern society.

On October 13 is the birthday of

Charles Sprague Pearce, American artist born in 1851 in Boston, Massachusetts.
In 1873 he became a pupil of Léon Bonnat in Paris, and after 1885 he lived in Paris and at Auvers-sur-Oise. He painted Egyptian and Algerian scenes, French peasants, and portraits, and also decorative work, notably for the Thomas Jefferson Building at the Library of Congress at Washington. He received medals at the Paris Salon and elsewhere, and was made Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor, decorated with the Order of Leopold, Belgium, the Order of the Red Eagle, Prussia, and the Order of the Dannebrog, Denmark.
Among his best-known paintings are The Decapitation of St John the Baptist (1881), in the Art Institute of Chicago; Prayer (1884), The Return of the Flock, and Meditation. Pearce was also among those who knew and painted the Capri muse Rosina Ferrara.
He died in 1914.

On October 14 is the birthday of

Albert Paul Dalou Drury, artist and printmaker born in 1903 in Brockley, south London. He was the son of sculptor Alfred Drury.
He was educated at Bristol Grammar and Westminster School. In 1921 he entered Goldsmiths School of Art in New Cross, London.
Drury was influenced by the work of Samuel Palmer, a 19th-century pastoralist, and this is seen in his early etchings in 1922. After study, Drury taught at the leading British Art Schools of the time including the Central School of Art, Heatherley School of Fine Art, and latterly at the school from where he graduated, Goldsmiths.
After World War II, Drury returned to Goldsmiths and became part of the mid 20th century Goldsmiths School. Drury eventually became Principal of Goldsmiths in 1966 for three years.
He produced 92 etchings, almost half of which were portraits and a quarter of which were landscapes. Although the majority of his work was portraiture, he is known for his landscapes including 'September' and 'Nicols Farm'. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, London, and, amongst others, via the British Council at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the National Gallery of Canada; the National Gallery of New Zealand and in the British Pavilion of the 1939 World's fair in New York.
Drury was President of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers for five years from 1970-75.
He died in 1987.

On October 15 is the birthday of

Reinis Zusters, painter born in 1918 in Odessa, Ukraine, of Latvian parents. Zusters’ father died before he was two years old and he was raised in an orphanage from an early age.
He studied Art at the Riga Technical College, Latvia, from 1935 to 1940. He married Aldija Kapteinis. After World War II the Zusters family were refugees. They reached Western Australia in 1950, where they stayed for 6 months before moving to Canberra.
Zusters was a prolific painter, predominantly in oils. He produced many large landscapes, including triptychs of the Blue Mountains. His landscapes were mountain scenes prepared in the manner of Jackson Pollock and completed with washes and pale glazes of colour. His cityscapes featured a rich paint surface and sharp-edged thickness of paint applied with a palette knife, layer upon layer. He painted urban scenes of Sydney, inland Australian scenes, and several major portraits including Sir Winston Churchill’s gardener (purchased by Art Gallery of NSW). He made many small informal portrait-drawings of friends.
He died in 1999.

On October 16 is the birthday of

Stefan Freiherr von Reiswitz, German painter and sculptor born in Munich in 1931. His work received the influence of Surrealism and Dadaism. In the early years of the 21st century his sculpture has gained importance over his painting.
In 1946, at the age of 15, his first paintings on glass were sold in a gallery in Traunstein. In 1952 he leaves Germany with his mother and moved to Paris, where he learned and received brief lessons from André Lhote and Fernand Léger, showing his fondness for Vlaminck and Dufy. Later, he goes to the French Basque Country, San Sebastian, Santillana del Mar, in the vicinity of which he visits the Altamira cave, and Madrid, where he frequents Carlos Sáenz de Tejada, received few painting classes from Daniel Vázquez Díaz and admired Goya in the Prado Museum. After a short stay in the Cadiz village of Arcos de la Frontera, he settled in 1955 in the province of Málaga, initially in Marbella, where he made his first exhibition in August 1956.
In March of 1958, once integrated in the so called Group Picasso and after initiating along with his friend the painter Jorge Lindell Diaz in the engraving, performed his first individual exhibition, still with works of costumbrist style, although by then he already has begun his more experimental period, characterized by the simultaneous investigations and explorations that it carries out of the abstract language, the naturalistic figuration, the materic painting, the informalism and the collage. This phase, which can be concluded by 1963, is followed by another one that ends up consolidating itself between 1964-1965, characterized by the appearance of an original iconographic repertoire composed of an unusual animal and human fauna and the habitual use since then of the technique of painting on glass. In addition to the work painted on glass and plexiglass, he has also been interested in engraving.
The other great part of Stefan's artistic activity is the sculpture, begun in the second half of the fifties, but converted into systematic dedication since 1986. Enthusiast of the medieval German and Flemish carvings by Marino Marini, Lothar Fischer, Luginbühl and Tinguely, of all the techniques used, sculpture is undoubtedly the one where we most visibly perceive the ancestry and influence of the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean in his work.

* Stefan von Reiswitz died on May 7th, 2019

On October 17 is the birthday of

Karl Völker, German architect and painter born in 1889 in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt, associated with the New Objectivity movement
After an apprenticeship as an interior decorator, he studied in 1912-1913 at the Dresden School of Arts and Crafts where Richard Guhr was his teacher. He joined the Berlin "Red Group" in 1924, and was a contributor to the journal Das Wort. His early paintings, such as Industriebild (Industrial Picture, 1923) are in a constructivist style.
He worked as an architect until 1933, when Hitler took power. Declared a degenerate artist by the Nazis, he was forced to support himself from 1933-1943 performing architectural conservation work.
After military service in World War II he resumed working as an architect and painter.
He died in 1962.

On October 18 is the birthday of

Henri-Adrien Tanoux, French landscape, nude and orientalist painter born in 1865 in Marseille.
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris where he was pupil of Léon Bonnat. He exhibited his works regularly in the Hall of Paris and received a mention of honor in the Universal Exhibition of Paris of 1889.
He died in 1923.

On October 19 is the birthday of

Jacqueline Marval (Marie Josephine Vallet), French painter, lithographer, and sculptress born in 1866 in Quaix-en-Chartreuse.
Vallet's first works were rejected from the 1900 Salon des Indépendants, but she succeeded in having a dozen paintings shown in that exhibition the following year, under the pseudonym of Jacqueline Marval. The art dealer Ambroise Vollard bought them all.
In 1902, several of her paintings were displayed alongside works by Flandrin, Albert Marquet, and Henri Matisse in a gallery in Rue Victor-Massé curated by Berthe Weill, who was particularly interested in promoting the works of female artists living in Paris.
In 1911, Marval was chosen by a jury made up of Gabriel Astruc, the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle, and the painters Maurice Denis and Édouard Vuillard to decorate the foyer of the new Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. She created a series of twelve paintings on the theme of Daphnis and Chloe, completing them in 1913. The same year, she protested against the removal from the Salon d'Automne of Kees van Dongen's The Spanish Shawl, and became friends with van Dongen, setting up her studio near his.
In 1913, Francis Picabia displayed Marval's 1903 painting The Odalisques in the Armory Show, an important exhibition of modern art in New York. Guillaume Apollinaire wrote of this painting in the Chronique des arts that "Mme. Marval has given the measure of her talent and has achieved a work of importance for modern painting." The same painting was displayed at the July 1916 Salon d'Antin organized by the poet André Salmon, beside Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon.
Marval's works began to be recognized across Europe; she exhibited in Basel, Barcelona, Oslo, the Venice Biennale, Winterthur, and Zurich. However, she lost interest in painting after several years; rather, she liked to dance, dress as a "précieuse ridicule", dye her hair red, and wear green hats which she made herself. She was given the epithet "the fairy of the Belle Époque."
Beginning in 1923, Marval was active in favor of the creation of modern art museums in Paris and Grenoble.
She died in 1932.

On October 20 is the birthday of

Peter Esdaile, Norwegian painter, sculptor, and printmaker born in 1947 in Montréal, Canada.
He was educated in the period 1966 - 1973 at the National Academy of Craft and Art Industry, and at the National Academy of Fine Arts where he received his MFA. He studied under Chrix Dahl, Åge Storstein, Ludvig Eikaas, Halvdan Ljøsne, and Arne Malmedal.
While Esdaile's early works were more political in nature, his later works have evolved to become a fusion of surrealism and expressionism. Esdaile's works are informed by Western and Oriental philosophy and have been influenced by Francis Bacon, David Hockney, Piet Mondrian, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, Anselm Kiefer, Alberto Giacometti, Knut Rose and Jens Johanessen.
Esdaile taught as a professor in graphic art, at the Art Academies in Trondheim, Bergen and Oslo, in the mid-to-late 1980s. During this time, he immersed himself in constructivism, experimented in monumental graphic art and photo gravure, monumental drawings in pastel and charcoal highly influenced by the works of Piet Mondrian and eventually large sculptural works. Throughout these years, Esdaile had an active schedule of exhibiting these experimental works, throughout Norway and Scandinavia.
During the 1990s, Esdaile worked as a sculptor on large-scale commissions both private and public. These works were monumental works in Plexiglas, brass, steel and wood.
After 2002, Esdaile pursued painting with a series of new techniques. Initially, the experimentation during this period resulted in uniting the language of geometric forms with more organic free-flowing structures. Over time his paintings evolved yet again, and the depiction of figures and a loose surrealist narrative re-emerged.
In 2006, Esdaile moved to the United States, spending six years developing his art. In 2012, he returned to Norway where he has focused on painting and sculpture.
