Tsuguharu Foujita [Gatos / Cats]

Cats are a central element in the work of the Japanese Tsuguharu Foujita. He painted, drew and engraved them, alone and in groups representing all feline attitudes and behaviors with great acuity. Also as inseparable companions of humans in a large number of portraits self-portraits and nudes.

(...) El gato es el doble de Foujita "

Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita (藤田 嗣治) was a Japanese–French painter and printmaker born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1886, who applied Japanese ink techniques to Western style paintings.
Immediately after graduating secondary school, Foujita wished to study in France, but on the advice of Mori Ōgai (his father's senpai military physician) he decided to study western art in Japan first.
In 1910, when he was twenty-four years old Foujita graduated from what is now the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music.

Three years later he went to Montparnasse in Paris, France. When he arrived there, knowing nobody, he met Amedeo Modigliani, Pascin, Chaim Soutine, and Fernand Léger and became friends with Juan Gris, Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. Within a few years, particularly after his 1918 exposition, he achieved great fame as a painter of beautiful women and cats in a very original technique. He is one of the few Montparnasse artists who made a great deal of money in his early years.
After his flight to Brazil in 1931, Foujita traveled and painted all over Latin America, giving hugely successful exhibitions along the way. In Buenos Aires, Argentina, 60,000 people attended his exhibition, and more than 10,000 queued up for his autograph.

In 1932 he contributed a work to the Pax Mundi, a large folio book produced by the League of Nations calling for a prolonged world peace. However, by 1933 he was welcomed back as a minor celebrity to Japan where he stayed and became a noted producer of militaristic propaganda during the war. For example, in 1938 the Imperial Navy Information Office supported his visit to China as an official war artist. Foujita left Japan after the war.
After the Second World War, painter Yasuo Kuniyoshi opposed Tsuguharu Foujita's art show at the Kennedy Galleries. Yasuo labelled Foujita a fascist, imperialist, and expansionist.
On his return to France, Foujita converted to Catholicism. He was baptised in Reims Cathedral on 14 October 1959. This is reflected in his last major work,at the age of 80, the design, building and decoration of the Foujita Chapel in the gardens of the Mumm champagne house in Reims, which he completed in 1966, not long before his death.
He died of cancer on January 29, 1968, in Zürich, Switzerland.

When interviewed by the Milwaukee Journal in 1935, Foujita stated, “Ladies who would be alluring to men should surround themselves with cats…I never look at men, only at women—they have, each one such marvelous possibilities of beauty.  But unfortunately most of them have not developed these possibilities because they have not learned the lessons cats can teach…”. The good and bad qualities of cats closely resemble the attributes of women.  “Cats never give anything away.  They are out for what they can get.  They have tigerish passions when aroused.  They have grace, beauty of movement, intriguing languor. Cats are never in a hurry, never angular.  They move softly, gently, insinuatingly.  Clever women live with cats…They study the animal’s movements, habits and emotional reactions…”

Colotipo sobre papel Arches / collotype on arches paper, 7 7/8" x 10 1/2", 1929. Bonhams

The 1930 book features the prose poetry of Michael Joseph as a complement to the illustrations of Tsuguharu Foujita, considered one of the most important and eccentric Japanese artists working in the West during the early twentieth century. The book contains twenty full-page etched plates, plus an additional suite of twenty loose etched plates on Japanese vellum.
Though a scarce edition--only five hundred copies of this signed/limited edition were printed--the book often appears at auction. Last year (2013), it just made the top 500 (by price) rare books list when it sold in December at Bonhams for $68,750. Before that, Bonhams sold one in June of 2011 for $61,000 and in June of 2012 for $74,500.
