Loribelle Spirovski [Pintura / Painting] + Bacon & Freud

Loribelle Spirovski

"Solipsista / Solipsist", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 106 x 106 cm., 2017

oil, acrylic and charcoal on canvas, 152 x 122 cm., 2018

Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 30 x 30 cm., 2017
Finalista del Premio de Arte Hornsby / Finalist Hornsby Art Prize, 2017

"Homme 41", óleo y acrílico sobre lienzo panel / oil and acrylic on canvas panel, 40 x 50 cm., 2018

"Memento Mori: Enjaulada / Caged", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 61 x 76 cm., 2015
Finalista del premio de arte Memorial Portia Geach / Finalist Portia Geach Memorial Art Prize, 2015

"Pareidolia", óleo, acrílico y carboncillo sobre lienzo / oil, acrylic and charcoal on canvas, 168 x 168 cm., 2018

"Homme 36", óleo y acrílico sobre lienzo / oil and acrylic on canvas, 40 x 50 cm., 2018

"Hamlet", óleo sobre panel / oil on panel, 2016

"¿Estoy haciendo feminismo, verdad? / Am I Doing Feminism Right?"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 2014

"Inquieto", óleo sobre lienzo panel / oil on canvas panel, 2016

Loribelle Spirovski was born in the Philippine capital of Manila in 1990, to Serbian and Filipino parents. She studied at the College of Fine Arts in Sydney, Australia, where she lives since she was 9.
«Basically all of my interests are inherited from my dad; everything from my love of books, architecture, desserts, Jazz, Classical music, the natural world, and of course, art. Every time I’ve gone to visit Europe, I’ve always felt very connected, but that hasn’t diminished my Filipino roots.»

"Uzumaki 1", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 2017

"Zeus disfrazado de cisne / Zeus Disguised as a Swan"
Óleo, acrílico y carboncillo sobre lienzo / oil, acrylic and charcoal on canvas, 152 x 122 cm., 2018

«I’m very intrigued by spaces and how they can affect and shape its occupants. As a child, I was always watching people, but was always more interested in spaces under the bed, in the crevice of a couch, or the corner of a wall. I would gravitate to those places and sit very close to them, feeling myself become separated from the world outside. I think that I still work in the same way, and am very sensitive to my surroundings, so the work that I tend to produce reflects how I was feeling within particular spaces.»

"Autorretrato sentada, Súcubo / Self Portrait Seated, Succubus"
Óleo sobre lino panel / oil on panel linen, 2016
Finalista del premio de arte Memorial Portia Geach / Finalist Portia Geach Memorial Art Prize, 2016

"Miedo escénico / Stage Fright", retrato de / portrait of Simon Tedeschi
Óleo sobre lienzo preparado / oil on prepared canvas
Semi-finalist Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, 2016

«As a child of immigrants and an immigrant myself, my fixation on space is a particularly meaningful one. I am constantly trying to find myself within the space of a canvas, even if it is through the portrait of another, or the portrait of someone that exists only in my imagination. These indirect self-portraits are distillations of my identity as a young woman, with all of my fixations, obsessions and anxieties. Over the past few years, I have found that I have become more and more drawn to the tension of a space – the need to fill it, the need to understand its strange sentience.»

"Homme 9" (obra y detalle / work and detail)
Óleo y acrílico sobre lienzo / oil and acrylic on canvas, 106 x 106 cm., 2017

"Angustia / Anguish", óleo sobre lino panel / oil on linen panel, 2016
Finalista del premio de arte Waverley / Finalist Waverley Art Prize, 2017

«I think that many contemporary portraitists feel that timeless attraction towards the human face, but in a world dominated by images of people, there’s a question of what we can add to that plethora. Personally, I have been trying to take the notion of the face back to its most basic elements, and we as humans are so attuned to identifying faces, that very little needs to be said for a face to emerge. This has lead to a very direct way of painting, using basic visual cues to represent the face. Eyes have an eternal power that somehow manages to transcend time and culture, so it was a no-brainer to have that as the focal point of each ‘portrait’.»

"John Bell en casa / at Home", óleo sobre lienzo preparado / oil on prepared canvas, 165 x 110 cm., 2017
Finalista del premio Archibald / Finalist of Archibald Prize, 2017

Art Gallery NSW

‘It should come as no surprise that painting a man such as John Bell was a daunting experience. He’s renowned for his work with Bell Shakespeare (the company he founded the year I was born) and I was immediately drawn to that powerful, chiselled face with its deep-set features and inscrutable personality,’ says Spirovski.
‘When he sat on the antique chair in the home he shares with his wife and fellow actor Anna Volska, he occupied the space with a contented regality and it was clear that any costume or prop would be superfluous.’
Spirovski opted for a minimal background ‘to draw the viewer to that intense gaze, while the flesh colours are heightened by the distinctive gleam of the Australian sun’. Art Gallery NSW

"Memento Mori: Arabesco / Arabesque", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 2015
Finalista del premio Hunters Hill / Finalis Hunters Hills Art Prize, 2016

"Homme 10" (detalle / detail), óleo y acrílico sobre lienzo / oil and acrylic on canvas, 120 x 120 cm., 2017

«As I began to depart from the ‘portrait’ as the central focus of my paintings, I started to examine the negative space around the figure, and the weight that empty space can carry.
As for the titles, I have always had a love of literature and so it was very natural for me to associate the images that I was producing with narratives and characters that I have encountered in books. Additionally, having been brought up in a very religious place like Manila, biblical narratives also emerged as inevitable connotations with my image-making.»

"Ofelia / Ophelia", óleo sobre panel / oil on panel, 41 x 41 cm., 2016

"Uzumaki 3", óleo sobre panel / oil on panel, 41 x 41 cm., 2017

«Francis Bacon is probably my biggest artistic inspiration. I just find him such an artistic genius. Just the fact that he can capture what it feels like dream, and the surrealism of his paintings are to me very cinematic. I think his three studies of Lucian Freud, who is my other main source of inspiration, there's just something so fascinating about their relationship as artists because clearly they both admire each other... but they're also jealous of each other, and competed with each other.» (see below)

Interview in "Talking With Painters" Ep # 19
In this interview Loribelle talks about how she taught herself to paint, the struggles she faced and why the rejection of her painting ‘Vers la Flamme‘ for the Archibald prize in 2015 was to cause her to rethink her whole approach.
We also discuss how she met her partner, acclaimed concert pianist, Simon Tedeschi, who has become her muse and source of much of her subject matter and how their relationship and the music in their lives has impacted her work.

Three Studies of Lucian Freud was sold in November 2013 for US$ 142.4 million, which at the time was the highest price attained at auction for a work of art.

Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud were friends but artistic rivals. Introduced in 1945 by artist Graham Sutherland, they swiftly became close friends who met frequently. The two artists painted each other several times, starting in 1951, when Freud first sat for Bacon. Two full-length triptychs of Freud by Bacon resulted. Three Studies of Lucian Freud is the later of the two; the first one, created in 1966, has not been seen since 1992. They form part of a series of large triptych portraits of Bacon's friends painted in the 1960s; other subjects include Isabel Rawsthorne, Muriel Belcher and his partner George Dyer. Bacon and Freud's friendship ended after an argument in the mid-1970s.

Freud painted Bacon only twice: in 1952 and in 1956-57. This last portrait was auctioned at Christie's.
The first, lent by the Tate to the Neue Nationalgalerie of Berlin in 1988 for a retrospective, was stolen and it has never been recovered.
