Quimera de Arezzo / Chimera of Arezzo

Bronce / bronze, 129 x 78,5 cm., c.400 A.C./ BC
Museo archeologico nazionale di Firenze (Florencia, Italia / Florence, Italy). Wikimedia Commons

The Chimera of Arezzo is regarded as the best example of Ancient Etruscan artwork. British art historian David Ekserdjian, said the sculpture "is one of the most arresting of all animal sculptures and the supreme masterpiece of Etruscan bronze-casting." It was found alongside a small collection of other bronze statues in Arezzo, an ancient Etruscan and Roman city in Tuscany. The statue was originally part of a larger sculptural group representing a fight between a Chimera and Greek hero Bellerophon. This sculpture was likely created as a votive offering to the Greek god Tinia.

"Diferenciación de Wallace Beery / Wallace Beery Differentiation"
Pastel y lápiz sobre papel / pastel and pencil on paper, 10,25" x 8", 1932. The Maas Gallery

In 1930 Spare began to draw anamorphic heads, that he called 'Experiments in Relativity'. He first showed these in what was to be his last exhibition in the West End, in November that year. The show was not a success. Spare called these heads 'Sidereal', as opposed to Surreal, a pun on the literal meaning of the word 'determined by the stars' and 'real from the side.' The subjects were taken from photographs of film stars that he cut out of magazines. Wallace Beery won an Oscar for Best Actor as the star of The Champ (1931), and was later Pancho Villa in Viva Villa! (1934), and Long John Silver in Treasure Island of the same year.

"Pasaje: el Avatar / Passage: The Avatar", acrílico sobre lienzo / acrylic on canvas, 48" x 48", 1988. Link

Initially inspired by a few notes from a Pink Floyd instrumental track, THE AVATAR came to Michael while he was floating in a sensory deprivation tank. He was seeking "mental breathing space" and wanted to create a focal point in his home for meditation, a window into another state of mind.
