The Tágides are the nymphs of the Tajo river (in Latin, Tagus) to whom Camões asks for inspiration to compose his work Os Lusíadas. They are an adaptation of the nereids of Greco-Roman mythology, the nymphs that live in the seas and in the rivers. In the work, these were the muses that inspired the author to report the grandiose deeds "never seen before", that is, the deeds of the "sons of the Lusitanians" (referring to the feats of the Portuguese). These inhabit the Tajo River which flows into Lisbon, Portugal. The word was created by André de Resende, in an annotation to his poem Vicentius (1545). The poem about the death of D. Beatriz de Sabóia, in which André de Resende would have used for the first time the word Tágides was lost. Wikipedia (Portuguese)
