Matthieu Soudet's photographs were featured for the first time in this blog four years ago. Born in 1992 in France, his work stands out for the use of natural environments and light, the staging, and the female nude as main subject in his personal work, although we can also find landscapes, fashion photography and other commisioned works.
Here you have a new selection with more recent creations, and some excerpts of his comments in an interview whose video you can see below.

«Clearly, when I first started photography, the only interest I could see was in animals. I could only see animals. When I was asked to do something else, I didn't care. To me it was the only thing. Walking in the forest I wanted to immortalize those encounters. Afterwards, step by step, I don't know... maybe the hormones, teens, I started shooting naked people (joke). I started to really appreciate the medium for what it is. I started to like it for what it is. This is how I understand what it could bring to creation. It is truly a way to express myself. And I discovered it quite late actually. At the beginning, I was using it like a photographic report, to immortalize scenes. And with the time I started to stage reality.»

«Today I work in digital. Strangely enough, hard work staging, I do it with digital. And when I do spontaneous photography, I take out vintage cameras, which is a bit contradictory because usually we do the opposite. We shoot spontaneously with digital, and we take time to work with vintage photography. I have this side... I think there is something more human in film cameras, so when I get out of precise staging and shoot spontaneously I prefer film cameras.»

«I really like natural light, and I often work with light conditions that are difficult. I have picture taken from caves, many pictures. It's what I like, when everything is dark inside, nearly, you just have thin lines of lights coming in here and there that you can see with naked eyes. And from there, you set your camera tripod. You take a long exposure. Here, you are in the etymological sense of photography's term. You start painting with lights, you see it appearing, and it's better than eyesight in the end. This is what interests me, difficult lighting.»
