On February 18 is the birthday of

Albert Welti, Swiss painter and etcher born in 1862 in Zürich. Many of his works depicted dreams or nightmares.
He was the oldest of seven children born to Jakob Albert Welti-Furrer (1833-1906), a hauler. Part of the Armée de l'Est - a French army which took part in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 - was billeted on his grandfather's property in 1871 and watching their activities inspired his later interest in historical scenes.

After completing his primary education, he attended the local Industrieschule, where he studied engraving with Johann Conrad Werdmüller. In 1880, he began a photography apprenticeship with his uncle Oswald Welti (1843-1932) in Lausanne, but stayed with him for only one year. In 1882, he was able to enroll at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich and came under the influence of Arnold Böcklin, who he met in 1885. After graduating, he obtained financial support from Karl von Rose (1854-1912), a generous patron of the arts.

He met and married Emmeline Wildbolz in 1894 and they settled in Höngg, a suburb of Zürich. After his father's death, he assuaged his grief by visiting Innertkirchen and Vättis, where he created numerous pastel nature studies. After that, he worked in Munich until 1908. while there, he became friends with the author, Hermann Hesse.
His wife died, suddenly, in 1911. He died a year later, aged only fifty. His country home in Ostermundigen, near Bern, was bought by Hesse.
His best known work is probably a fresco, Die Landsgemeinde (The rural community), in the meeting room of the Ständerat at the Federal Palace. It was left unfinished and was completed by Wilhelm Balmer in 1914. In addition to his art, he also designed postage stamps for the Swiss Post.
His son, Albert Jakob Welti also became an artist and an author. The popular Swiss singer/songwriter, Sophie Hunger is his grand niece.

On February 19 is the birthday of

Hans Grundig, German painter and graphic artist born in 1901 in Dresden, associated with the New Objectivity movement.
After an apprenticeship as an interior decorator, studied in 1920–1921 at the Dresden School of Arts and Crafts. He then studied at the Dresden Academy from 1922 to 1923. During the 1920s his paintings, primarily portraits of working-class subjects, were influenced by the work of Otto Dix. Like his friend Gert Heinrich Wollheim, he often depicted himself in a theatrical manner, as in his Self-Portrait during the Carnival Season (1930).
He had his first solo exhibition in 1930 at the Dresden gallery of Józef Sandel. He made his first etchings in 1933.
Politically anti-fascist, he joined the German Communist Party in 1926, and was a founding member of the arts organization Assoziation revolutionärer bildender Künstler in Dresden in 1929.

Following the fall of the Weimar Republic, Grundig was declared a degenerate artist by the Nazis, who included his works in the defamatory Degenerate Art exhibition in Munich in 1937. He expressed his antagonism toward the regime in paintings such as The Thousand Year Reich (1936). Forbidden to practice his profession, he was arrested twice—briefly in 1936, and again in 1938, after which he was interned in Sachsenhausen concentration camp from 1940 to 1944.
In 1945 he went to Moscow, where he attended an anti-fascist school. Returning to Berlin in 1946, he became a professor of painting at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. In 1957 he published his autobiography, Zwischen Karneval und Aschermittwoch ("Between Shrovetide carnival and Ash Wednesday"). He was awarded the Heinrich Mann Prize in Berlin in 1958, the year of his death.

"Dame à l'eventail / Dama con abanico / Lady With Fan"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 115 x 82 cm. Bonhams

On February 21 is the birthday of

Charles-François-Prosper Guérin, French post-impressionist painter born in 1875 in Sens.
He studied with Gustave Moreau in the l'École des Beaux Arts à Paris, and had one exhibition at the Grafton Galleries in 1910; in a review Huntly Carter wrote of his "daring extravagance" and that he "show[ed] how the strongest primary colours can be used without crudity, and whose work has a decorative value which the average muddy and colourless work of our day does not possess".

"Desnudo / Nude", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 116 x 89 cm., c.1910

Guérin attained some historic notoriety for sitting on the jury of the Salon d'Automne of 1908, which rejected almost all of the paintings of Georges Braque. The other jury members were Henri Matisse, Georges Rouault, and Albert Marquet, all of whom had also been students of Moreau. The jury's action caused Braque—who had been a great success the year before—to withdraw completely from the Salon. Braque subsequently entered into an exclusive contract with the dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler requiring him (and Picasso) to avoid salons, during which time Braque and Picasso developed cubism.
Guérin was teaching at the Académie de La Palette in 1907 when Henri Hayden studied there and at the Académie Moderne in 1913 when Blanche Lazzell enrolled there, as well as at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.
He died in 1939.

"Das geborstene Pferd / El caballo agrietado / The Cracked Horse"
Óleo sobre panel duro / oil on hardboard, 50,5 x 42 cm. Lempertz

On February 23 is the birthday of

Edgar Karl Alfons Ende, German surrealist painter born in 1901 in Altona, the father of the children's novelist Michael Ende.
Ende attended the Altona School of Arts and Crafts from 1916 to 1920. In 1922 he married Gertrude Strunck, but divorced four years later. He remarried in 1929, the same year his son Michael was born. In the 1930s Ende's Surrealist paintings began to attract considerable critical attention, but were then condemned as degenerate by the Nazi government. Beginning in 1936 the Nazis forbade him to continue to paint or exhibit his work. In 1940 he was conscripted into the Luftwaffe as an operator of anti-aircraft artillery.

The Eagle That Extinguishes The Light", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 70 x 90 cm., 1953. Mutual Art

The majority of his paintings were destroyed by a bomb raid on Munich in 1944, making his surviving pre-war work extremely rare. In 1951, Ende met the recognized founder of Surrealism, André Breton, who admired his work and declared him an official Surrealist. He continued to paint surrealist works until his death in 1965 of a myocardial infarction.
Ende's paintings are thought to have had a significant influence on his son's writing. This is inferred in the scenes depicting the surreal dream-paintings from Yor's Minroud in Die Unendliche Geschichte (The Neverending Story), and is made explicit in Michael Ende's book Der Spiegel im Spiegel (The mirror in the mirror), a collection of short stories based on (and printed alongside) Edgar Ende's surrealist works.

Today, February 24, is the birthday of

Helmut Kolle, German painter born in 1899 in Berlin-Charlottenburg. He found major success in France in the 1920s, fusing the German modernist style with that of French painting.
He received some instruction in painting and drawing in Bern, Switzerland, where he arrived with his family in 1906.
In 1918 he met his business partner, lover, and mentor Wilhelm Uhde, an art collector, and moved with him to Weimar. After early experiences as a fledgling writer, Kolle shifted his focus more and more to painting, getting instruction from Erna Pinner in 1918/19, made possible by Uhde's connections in the art world.
In 1923, Uhde hosted the first show of Kolle's paintings at his art gallery in Berlin. In 1924, Kolle and Uhde moved to Paris, where Kolle was heavily influenced by the works of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. A very successful exhibition followed in 1925, which even had a poem by Jean Cocteau about one of the paintings in the catalog. At a 1926 exhibition, almost all paintings shown were also sold.

Big Male Nude With Arms Crossed", 1925. Wikimedia Commons

Kolle had been suffering from endocarditis since 1922. In the summer of 1931, his health problems got worse and he died in November that year.
Kolle's works, insofar as they depict people, tend to feature either males, often in various states of undress or slightly suggestive poses, either (in his earlier works) very feminine-looking boys or (later in his career) decidedly muscular men, the shift probably influenced by the ideals of masculinity as found in novels by Henry de Montherlant. Despite these fairly obvious homoerotic sentiments in his paintings, Kolle was notoriously guarded about his homosexuality and his relationship with Uhde, much different to the openness of other homosexual artists in France or Germany at the time, e.g. Klaus Mann.
After Kolle's death, major exhibitions of his works took place in Hamburg (1952 and 2011), Chemnitz (2010), and Munich (1994), in addition to numerous exhibitions in smaller European galleries.
