On August 4 is the birthday of

Burk Uzzle, American photojournalist born in 1938 in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Initially grounded in documentary photography when he was the youngest contract photographer hired by LIFE magazine at age 23, his work continues to reflect the human condition. For sixteen years during the 1970s and 1980s, he was an active contributor to the evolution of Magnum and served as its President in 1979 and 1980. While affiliated with the cooperative, he produced the iconic and symbolic image of Woodstock, helped us grasp an understanding of the assassination and funeral of Dr Martin Luther King Jr, and powerfully projects comprehension of what it means to be an outsider - from Cambodian war refugees to disenfranchised populations, to portraits of communities not identified on a roadmap.

His archive spans more than six decades and captures much of the history of analog and digital photography. His current bodies of work rest deep in issues of social justice. A dozen years ago, Uzzle returned to North Carolina and now lives and works in two century old industrial buildings located in downtown Wilson not far from where he was born. With the energy and determination of someone half his age, he wakes every morning at 5am, takes an hour to swiftly bike all over the town before the sun is up, and then gets to work. Disciplined, organized, and always open to ideas emboldened through keen intuition, Uzzle states with conviction that photography is his reason to breathe and what he sees is his muse.

[Adelaide]: Rigby, 1966. OCLC 901968.

On August 5 is the birthday of

Jeff Carter, Australian photographer, filmmaker and author born in 1928 in Melbourne. His work was widely published and contributed iconic representation of the working population of the Australian bush as self-sufficient rugged and laconic.
Jeff attended Melbourne Boys High School. By the time he matriculated in 1946, his three major passions were clear – photography, writing and travel. He began taking photographs while still at high school. His first photos were taken with a Kodak Box Brownie, given to him as a 13th birthday present.

In 1946, Carter set off to travel around Australia with his camera and typewriter and made a living selling his stories and photographs to a wide range of Australian and international newspapers and magazines including Paris Match, People, Pix, Walkabout and The Australian Women's Weekly. He was later also commissioned by National Geographic. The curator of the 2011 retrospective of Carter's work, Sandra Byron, said his photographs were "deceptively simple because they were extremely well crafted, wonderful images", and that he was an important figure in Australian documentary photography.
From 1949–54, Carter was editor of Outdoors and Fishing magazine; he then resigned to travel in rural and outback Australia as a freelance photo-journalist. He wrote and illustrated 17 books based on his experiences. His most widely held book outside Australia is People of the Inland. [Adelaide]: Rigby, 1966. OCLC 901968. Carter's other books include: The Life and Land of Central Australia (1967); Outback in Focus (1968); Stout Hearts and Leathery Hands (1968); Surf Beaches of Australia's East Coast (1968); Four-Wheel Drive Swagman (1969); Wild Country (1974); Jeff Carter's Great Book Of The Australian Outdoors (1976); All Things Wild (1977); and Jeff Carter's Guided Tours Of The Outback (1979).

Hizo repetidos viajes a Salzburgo.

On August 6 is the birthday of

Franz Xaver Setzer, actually Franz Anton Adolf, Austrian photographer born in 1886 in Vienna.
He received his training at the Imperial Royal Institute of Prints and Drawings, he later founded his own studio in 1909. Setzer saw his portraits as works of art and the style of portraiture against unvarnished background he used was considered very modern at that time. The news that the portraits created in Setzer's studio were of the highest artistic quality had quickly spread in Vienna during the interwar years. The well-lit studio in the attic of the Museumstrasse 5 in the 7th district in Vienna was one of the first addresses for portraits.

The ambience of "Setzer – Photographische Bildnisse, behind the German Volkstheater" – as an advertising card from early years describes the location – met the high demands and was equipped with "a lift and a telephone". Personalities from the theatre, opera and cultural scene were portrayed in their early years. Among the first customers before 1920 were the composer Arnold Schönberg, the actress Hedwig Bleibtreu and the writer Stefan Zweig. He ran the studio with his future wife Friederike von Winternitz. In 1920 Setzer married the opera singer Marie Gutheil-Schoder this marriage expanded his social position. In addition to contemporary artists, representatives of the aristocracy, politicians and economists were increasingly included in the group of people who were photographed by Setzer.
Alternating photos show that Franz Xaver Setzer also had friendly contacts with his contemporary colleagues, such as Madame d'Ora and Arthur Benda.
Setzer made repeated trips to Salzburg. The Salzburg Festival was an opportunity to make photos on location – for example, of Giacomo Puccini, Max Reinhardt and Maria Jeritza – as well as receiving commissions for the studio in Vienna. In April 1920, twenty-year-old Marie Karoline Tschiedel took up a position as assistant to the artist in the studio. She had also studied at the KuK Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt and specialized in the fields of portrait photography and negative retouching.

The global economic crisis in the 1930s also affected the work in the studio. The situation deteriorated and Setzer withdrew, also for health reason. Tschiedel, who had already worked closely with Setzer in recent years, became the technical director of the studio in 1934 and increasingly assumed overall responsibility for the studio.
At the age of 52, Franz Xaver Setzer died in January 1939 as a result of a serious illness. The last shot of Setzer is listed in the record book number 18448. Marie Karoline Tschiedel continued with the studio under the name Setzer-Tschiedel until 1980.
He died in 1939.

"Mi perro / My Dog Florence"

On August 7 is the birthday of

Camilla Rutherford, Scottish award-winning photojournalist born in 1983 in Edinburg, who lives in Wanaka, New Zealand. Rutherford specializes in outdoor sports photography and often shoots everything from sports, travel, and lifestyle, in the mountains of New Zealand.
Rutherford left her home in Scotland to go to New Zealand to resume her love for skiing. She started shooting with her Iphone 4 before getting her Canon camera. She shot in the winter for four years before moving to Wanaka and shooting her first summer photos there. Wanaka is not far from Mount Aspiring National Park where she sometimes takes photographs.

She also travels to Nepal, China, Japan, India and Switzerland to get some shots as well. Usually using her Canon 5D Mark 3 camera, she says capturing the athletes in their element is the most critical part in telling the story within the picture. The landscapes and terrain in Wanaka help produce her work. "It can be as simple as someone standing admiring a vista, not even doing anything extreme but simply taking it all in, and this gives a whole new meaning to the photo", Rutherford says.

She has many pictures published on her website, social media, and travel magazines all over the world. Air New Zealand used her pictures in their advertisements in Sydney and Melbourne’s Central train stations as part of an ad campaign for Air NZ. Rutherford is supported by F-Stop Gear, Peak Design, Cecilia Gallery, Smith Optics and Faction Skis.
