Casas del arte. Arquitectura / Houses of Art.

In this series we take a look at museums and galleries, but not in terms of content, but from an architectural and Institutional point of view. There are real jewels, and on the proposal of my friend and habitual collaborator Shirley Rebuffo we publish images and information on the construction and characteristics of buildings that house the collections of this art that we love and that from this blog we help to spread day by day .
As a general line, we will go through museums that we have personally visited.
We present today the TEA (TSA, Tenerife Space for the Arts), in a double issue. In the first post, description, the exteriors, and plans. In this second, interior views and a biographical note on the architects involved in the project.

Los arquitectos / The Architects

Virgilio Gutiérrez Herreros
(Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Islas Canarias, España /
Canary Islands, Spain, 1958-)

Fotograma del video / Still of the video Youtube

He studied at the German School in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, graduating as an architect in 1982 with a degree from the School of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, after the first years at the School of Architecture of Las Palmas. He was Dean of the Canary Islands College of Architects from 2008 to 2010.

- How was the experience of the TEA with Herzog & de Meuron, both in the project phase and in the construction management? What would you highlight about the result?

- TEA has been an invaluable experience. I have had the opportunity to participate in a process that began in 1998 with the first ideas and ended, ten years later, with the inauguration of the building at the end of 2008; although I am still linked to it as a member of its Board of Directors.

Regarding the Herzog & De Meuron Group, Gutiérrez Herreros says:
"Since 1998 I have been collaborating with them in different works, almost interruptedly.
The extraordinary laboratory of ideas that is their office has allowed me to be continually amazed by their work and, at the same time, taking the necessary distance, to help me be aware of 'my measure': where I live, the socio-economic and cultural reality of our environment, the fragility of the island; what we can and cannot, or should not, do or offer, the rigour and responsibility with which we must attend to all the opportunities that are presented to us, the necessary balance and adjustment of the responses to be suggested in each specific case, the humility with which you must face all the relationships and all the processes, being aware of your own limitations, the need to be yourself and to try to improve at work every day."

Jacques Herzog & Pierre de Meuron
(Basilea, Suiza / Basel, Switzerland, 1950-)

Herzog & de Meuron is a group of Swiss architects, composed of Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron. The firm's headquarters are in Basel, although there are currently satellite offices in Madrid, Beijing, London and New York.
In their projects the context of the future building or intervention is extremely relevant, acquiring a vital importance at the time of development, and at the same time they work taking into account at all times the public space as a key element.
In 2001 Jacques Herzog and Pierre De Meuron received the Pritzker Prize, the most prestigious award in the world of architecture. The jury praised the passion and constant innovation with which both use architectural materials and solutions, as well as the collaboration with artists and the interest in integrating art and architecture.
The president of the jury, J. Carter Brown, commented: "It is difficult to think of architects in history who have approached the integration of architecture with greater imagination and virtuosity", referring to the innovative use of materials and exterior treatments, such as screen-printed glass. The facades end up becoming a dynamic and lively element where light, reflections, colours come to life thanks to the treatment of light in their projects.
