Rabin Mondal, nacido Rabindra Nath Mondal, fue un pintor indio de Howrah, Bengala Occidental. Fue miembro fundador de los Pintores de Calcuta. Vivió y trabajó en una relativa oscuridad hasta que las exposiciones retrospectivas de su obra en Calcuta, Nueva Delhi y Bombay llamaron la atención nacional en 2005.
Aunque la familia Mondal tenía un pasado de clase media alta y muy educada, Howrah era conocida por sus barrios de tugurios superpoblados y sus trabajadores migrantes empobrecidos que trabajaban en varias industrias sucias. Se graduó en Comercio en la Universidad de Calcuta en 1952. Su primera educación formal en arte fue en el Indian College of Art and Draugtsmanship, Calcuta. Continuó sus estudios artísticos en el Asutosh Museum of Indian Art de la Universidad de Calcuta.
En 1964 Rabin y lo que ahora se conoce como el "Grupo de los Ocho" (formado por Nikhil Biswas, Prokash Karmakar, Bijan Chowdhury, Gopal Sanyal, Bimal Banerjee, Mahim Rudra, Gunbritt Svensson y el propio Mondal) formaron los Pintores de Calcuta. Este animado grupo de artistas trabajó para promover el arte modernista no sólo en Calcuta, sino en toda la India, llegando a ser conocido a nivel nacional en el proceso.

Mondal trabajó en su estudio de Howrah, produciendo una serie de "reyes" y "reinas" pintados al óleo sobre lienzo. Estas son quizás las obras más conocidas de Mondal, que representan figuras de aspecto trágico, que parecen sufrir paranoia y miedo, pero que irónicamente se denominan reyes y reinas. Algunos de los aspectos más destacados de esta serie fueron las obras "Hombre actuando como un rey", "El rey siendo apaciguado", "Rey haciendo una confesión" y "El rey y su asesino". Mondal también produjo una serie de "deidades", que a veces parecen fusionarse temáticamente con sus "reinas". Las deidades del artista están generalmente representadas con coronas radiantes, mientras que sus reyes y reinas no lo son. Otros temas favoritos del artista fueron el burdel y el harén, que representó en lienzos como "Evento en el barrio rojo" y "Orgía".

Aunque algunos de los mejores lienzos de Mondal tienen una evidente influencia cubista, estilísticamente su obra ha sido predominantemente expresionista, una reacción a la atormentada humanidad que le rodeaba en Calcuta, y a los trágicos acontecimientos de sus años de formación.

Rabin Mondal, born as Rabindra Nath Mondal, was an Indian painter from Howrah, West Bengal. He was a founding member of the Calcutta Painters. He lived and worked in relative obscurity until retrospective exhibitions of his work in Kolkata, New Delhi and Bombay brought him to India’s national attention in 2005.
Though the Mondal family had a highly educated and upper-middle-class background, Howrah was known for its overcrowded slums and impoverished migrant workers who toiled in various grimy industries. It was an environment that caused the young Rabin to take note of the realities of life and its struggles.
Like many Indian artists of his generation, Rabin was deeply affected by the Bengal famine of 1943, the struggle for India's independence, and the subsequent partition of his native Bengal.

He graduated in Commerce from Calcutta University in 1952. His first formal education in art was at the Indian College of Art and Draughtsmanship, Calcutta. He continued his artistic studies at the Asutosh Museum of Indian Art of the University of Calcutta.
In 1964 Rabin and what is now known as the "Group of Eight", (which consisted of Nikhil Biswas, Prokash Karmakar, Bijan Chowdhury, Gopal Sanyal, Bimal Banerjee, Mahim Rudra, Gunbritt Svensson and Mondal himself) formed the Calcutta Painters. This lively group of artists worked to promote modernist art not only in Calcutta, but throughout India, becoming nationally known in the process.

Mondal worked out of his Howrah studio, churning out a series of "kings" and "queens" painted with oil on canvas. These are perhaps Mondal’s best known works, depicting tragic looking figures, seemingly suffering from paranoia and fear, yet ironically termed kings and queens. Some of the highlights of this series were the works Man Acting as King, King Being Appeased, King Making Confession, and King and his Assassin. Mondal also produced a series of "deities", which sometimes seem to merge thematically with his "queens". The artist’s deities are generally depicted with radiate crowns, whereas his kings and queens are not. Other favorite subjects of the artist were the brothel and the harem, which he depicted in canvases such as Event in Red Light Area and Orgy.

Though some of Mondal’s best canvases have an obvious cubist influence, stylistically his work has been predominantly expressionist, a reaction to the tormented humanity that surrounded him in Calcutta, and the tragic events of his formative years.
Rabin Mondal’s work can be found in the collections of The National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, Osians Art Archive, Mumbai, The Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata, and the Jane and Kito de Boer Collection, Dubai.
He died on July 2.

Leon Kossoff fue un pintor figurativo británico nacido en 1926 en Islington, Londres, conocido por sus retratos, dibujos del natural y paisajes urbanos de Londres, Inglaterra.
En 1938 asistió a la Escuela Hackney Downs en Londres. En 1939 fue evacuado con la escuela a King's Lynn, Norfolk, donde vivió con el Sr. y la Sra. R.C. Bishop, que lo alentaron a interesarse por el arte. Durante este tiempo realizó sus primeras pinturas. Cuando regresó a Londres en 1943 fue a la Saint Martin's School of Art y estudió arte comercial. En 1956 se unió a la Galería de Bellas Artes de Helen Lessore, ubicada en Bruton Place en Londres. En 1959 comenzó a enseñar en el Regent Street Polytechnic, la Chelsea School of Art y la Saint Martin's School of Art, todas en Londres. Mientras enseñaba continuó su carrera artística, y pronto comenzó a aparecer en galerías y muestras, junto con su amigo Frank Auerbach y otros artistas como Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud y Keith Critchlow, un amigo de la escuela de Saint Martin's. Durante este tiempo trasladó su estudio a Willesden Junction, y en 1966 a Willesden Green.
En 1995 expuso sus obras en la 46ª Bienal de Venecia y en 1996 fue objeto de una retrospectiva de la Tate Gallery. Leon Kossoff was a British figurative painter born in 1926 in Islington, London, known for portraits, life drawings and cityscapes of London, England.
In 1938, he attended the Hackney Downs School in London. In 1939, he was evacuated with the school to King's Lynn, Norfolk, where he lived with Mr and Mrs R.C. Bishop, who encouraged his interest in art. During this time, Kossoff made his first paintings. When he returned to London in 1943, Kossoff went to Saint Martin's School of Art, and studied commercial art. He also attended life drawing classes in the evenings at Toynbee Hall.

He spent three years in military service with the Royal Fusiliers, and served in Italy, Holland, Belgium and Germany. After his military service, he returned to the Saint Martin’s School of Art in 1949, and at Borough Polytechnic, took special classes under David Bomberg from 1950 to 1952. He was also influenced by another one of his teacher’s students, Frank Auerbach. Both young artists dealt with similar emotions and subject matter in their work, and employed heavy impasto in their paintings. Kossoff chose his subject matter mostly from the area of London where he was born. From 1950–1953, Kossoff's studio was located at Mornington Crescent; he then moved to Bethnal Green, where he lived until 1961. Kossoff studied at the Royal College of Art from 1953–1956.

In 1956, Kossoff joined Helen Lessore’s Beaux Arts Gallery, located on Bruton Place in London. In 1959, Kossoff began to teach at the Regent Street Polytechnic, the Chelsea School of Art, and the Saint Martin's School of Art, all in London. While teaching, he continued his artistic career, and soon started featuring in galleries and shows, along with his friend Frank Auerbach and other artists such as Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and Keith Critchlow, a school friend from Saint Martin's. During this time, Kossoff moved his studio to Willesden Junction, and in 1966, moved his studio to Willesden Green.
In 1995, Kossoff exhibited his artworks at the 46th Venice Biennale and in 1996 was the subject of a Tate Gallery retrospective. In 2007, London's National Gallery held an exhibition of Kossoff's work entitled "Leon Kossoff: Drawing from Painting". Kossoff declined appointment as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. In 2010, Kossoff exhibited a travelling show of new paintings and drawings. In 2013-2014, Kossoff's urban landscapes were shown in a travelling international exhibition, titled "Leon Kossoff: London Landscapes".
He died at the age of 92 on July 4th.
