Francesco Romoli
Francisco Romoli nació en Pisa en 1977. Interesado desde siempre en cualquier tipo de formas expresivas, a los 14 años comenzó a estudiar guitarra y teoría de la música. Se enamoró de los ordenadores en 1998 y comenzó a trabajar en hackeo y arte de la red. Se graduó en 2004 en Pisa en ciencas informáticas. En 2010 comenzó a utilizar Photoshop para sus creaciones, a medio camino entre el diseño gráfico y la fotografía. En 2012 comenzó a estudiar en el centro contemporáneo de fotografía Fundación Estudio Marangoni, en Florencia. Entre sus otras pasiones se encuentran los viajes y el paracaidismo.
En 2013 creó su Serie "Ciudades imaginarias", por la que se hizo internacionalmente conocido. En su Exposición individual en Milán, en la feria MIA, en abril de 2015, presentó por primera vez su serie de "Ciudad oscura", hecha con escenas en miniatura y dioramas de una ciudad ficticia.

«Empecé en la fotografía hace unos años. Más tarde estudié fotografía en el centro de fotografía contemporánea, Fondazione Studio Marangoni en Florencia. Pero en cuanto a técnicas de postproducción soy autodidacta.
Durante un tiempo me dediqué al paisaje, pero luego me di cuenta de que no era para mí. Quería crear algo que realmente no existía.»

Serie "Ciudad oscura", "Esperando" / Dark City Series, "Waiting"

"Ciudad oscura" se realizó utilizando dos técnicas fotográficas muy diferentes: digital y analógica. Él divide las imágenes en dos categorías: "Reality Show", que capturó usando una Polaroid, y "Mundos Posibles", que se hizo con una cámara digital y manipulación de imágenes. Según Romoli, a menudo se considera que ambas técnicas están en desacuerdo entre sí. La fotografía digital se ve como más objetiva, como un espejo de la realidad, y la analógica como más ambigua. Al combinar las dos técnicas, ambas series nos muestran un punto de vista diferente, aún cuando comparten un tema común.

«"Ciudades imaginarias" surge del deseo de crear paisajes desolados y surrealistas.
Me gusta imaginar cosas que no existen. Soy un gran fan de la ciencia ficción y la fantasía. Los muchos libros que he leído ciertamente han influido en mi estilo.
Me apasiona el arte contemporáneo, además leo muchos libros y revistas. Amo a artistas como Sherrie Levine, Barbara Kruger y Richard Prince. Una artista que realmente me gusta es Maggie Taylor.» (ver más abajo)

La serie "Bipolar" presenta arquitecturas famosas con las que todos estamos familiarizados (aunque solo sea por haberlas visto en una postal o en alguna revista de viajes). Debajo de ellas, sin embargo, en sus entrañas, las estructuras oníricas aparecen inesperadamente para crear un juego de dobles. El universo de Romoli se basa en el contraste, entre el bien y el mal, el Paraíso y el Infierno, la realidad y la ficción, lo etéreo y lo carnal.

Serie "Postales desde el futuro, Nº2" / Postcards from Future Series #2

"Postales desde el futuro" funde pasado, presente y futuro. Son retratos en los que el sujeto ha perdido la cabeza, que ha sido sustituida por una lámpara, una radio vieja o una TV. ¿Ha llegado la era de los androides?
«En un futuro no necesariamente muy lejano, la gente vivirá con implantes que serán símbolos de sus propias obsesiones y debilidades. (...)
Estas imágenes conservan el estilo de los retratos del '900, pero están rehechas de manera "futurista", para enfatizar nuestra tendencia a poseer todo tipo de objetos, hasta el punto que al final terminamos convirtiéndonos en objetos nosotros mismos.»
«Para la estética de este proyecto mi fuente ha sido el steampunk, un género literario fantástico y de historietas ambientado a fines de 1800, y remite a la revolución industrial, combinando diversas visiones futurísticas con máquinas, robots y aeronaves. Navegando por este mundo he concebido mi escenografía.»

Francesco Romoli was born in Pisa in 1977. Always interested in expressive forms of any type at age 14 he began to study guitar and music theory. He falls in love in computers in 1998 and started to work on hacking and net-art. He graduated in 2004 in Pisa in computer science. In 2010 begins to use photoshop for his creations, halfway between graphic design and photography. In 2012 he began studying at the center of contemporary photography Fondazione Studio Marangoni, Florence. His other passions include skydiving and travel.
In 2013 he created his Imaginary Towns Series, for whiche he became internationally known. In his Solo Exhibition in Milan, at MIA fair, in April 2015 the artist presented for the first time his series Dark City, made by miniature scenes and dioramas of a fictional city.

Dark City was made using two very different photographic techniques – digital and analogue. He breaks down the images into two categories; Reality Show, which he captured using a Polaroid, and Possible Worlds, which were made with a digital camera and image manipulation. According to Romoli, both techniques are often seen as being at odds with one other. Digital photography is viewed as more objective, like a mirror of reality, and analogue, as being more ambiguous. In combining the two techniques, both series show us a different point of view, but still share a common theme.

«I got into photography a few years ago. Later I studied photography at the center of contemporary photography, Fondazione Studio Marangoni in Florence. But the post-production techniques are self-taught.
For some time I dedicated myself to the landscape, but then I realised that it was not for me. I wanted to create something that did not really exist.»

«"Imaginary Towns" stems from the desire to create desolate and surreal landscapes.
I like to imagine things that do not exist. I'm a big fan of science fiction and fantasy. The many books I have read certainly have influenced my style.

The "Bi-polar" series presents famous architectures with which we are all familiar (if only for having seen them on a postcard or in a travel magazine). Beneath them, however, in their guts, the dream structures appear unexpectedly to create a doubles game. The universe of Romoli is based on the contrast between good and evil, Paradise and Hell, reality and fiction, the ethereal and the carnal.

"Postcards from the future" merges past, present and future. They are portraits in which the subject has lost his head, which has been replaced by a lamp, an old radio or a TV. Has the era of androids arrived?
«In a future not necessarily very far, people will live with implants that will be symbols of their own obsessions and weaknesses. (...)
These images retain the style of the 1900 portraits but they are reworked in a "futuristic" way to emphasize our tendency to possess all kinds of objects, to the point that we end up becoming objects ourselves.»
«For the aesthetics of this project my source has been the steampunk, a fantastic literary and comic genre set in the late 1800s, and refers to the industrial revolution, combining various futuristic visions with machines, robots and aircrafts. Navigating this world I have conceived my scenery.»
