Charles Wellington Furse, pintor inglés nacido en 1868 en Staines, Surrey.
En su corta vida demostró tal habilidad como pintor de retratos y figuras que forma un eslabón importante en la cadena del retrato británico que se extiende desde la época en que Van Dyck fue llamado a la corte de Carlos I hasta el siglo XX.
Su talento fue precoz; a la edad de siete años lo indicó en una serie de dibujos que ilustraban las novelas de Sir Walter Scott. Asistió a la escuela pública de Haileybury College. Ingresó a la Escuela Slade en 1884, ganando la beca Slade al año siguiente, y completó su educación en la Académie Julian en París. A pesar de ser un gran trabajador, su actividad se veía interrumpida con frecuencia por períodos de enfermedad, ya que había desarrollado signos de tuberculosis mientras asistía a la Escuela Slade. Un lienzo importante llamado Caín fue su primera contribución (1888) a la Real Academia, a la que fue elegido en el año de su muerte. Durante algunos años antes había sido un firme partidario del New English Art Club, en cuyas exposiciones colaboraba regularmente.

En octubre de 1900 se casó con Katharine Symonds, hija de John Addington Symonds. Más tarde se la conoció como Dame Katharine Furse. La pareja tuvo dos hijos: Peter Reynolds Furse (nacido en 1901) y John Paul Wellington Furse (nacido el 13 de octubre de 1904). Su afición al deporte y a la vida al aire libre se expresa en su arte, e introduce una nota nueva, fresca y vigorosa en el retrato. Nunca hay una sugerencia del estudio o de la fatigosa pose en sus retratos. Los modelos no parecen conscientes de ser pintados, y generalmente se las ve practicando su deporte o pasatiempo favorito al aire libre, en el pleno disfrute de la vida. Así son "Diana de las tierras altas", "Lord Roberts" y "El regreso del jinete" en la Tate Gallery, los cuatro niños en la caza del zorro en "Los York y Ainsty", "El vestido lila", "El Sr. y la Sra. Oliver pescando" y los retratos de Lord Charles Beresford y William Johnson Cory. Su revelador retrato de un joven Charles Darling que más tarde, como Juez Darling, se sentaría en la apelación criminal de Sir Roger Casement, se encuentra en la National Portrait Gallery.
Casi toda la obra de Furse presenta una marcada tendencia decorativa. Su sentido del espacio, la composición y el diseño decorativo se puede juzgar mejor por sus decoraciones murales para el Ayuntamiento de Liverpool, realizadas entre 1899 y 1902. Una exposición conmemorativa de las pinturas y bocetos de Furse se celebró en el Burlington Fine Arts Club en 1906.
Murió en 1904.

Charles Wellington Furse, English painter born in 1868 in Staines, Surrey.
In his short span of life demonstrated such skill as a portrait and figure painter that he forms an important link in the chain of British portraiture which extends from the time when Van Dyck was called to the court of Charles I into the 20th century.
His talent was precocious; at the age of seven he gave indications of it in a number of drawings illustrating the novels of Sir Walter Scott. He attended public school at Haileybury College. He entered the Slade School in 1884, winning the Slade scholarship in the following year, and completed his education at the Académie Julian in Paris. Hard worker as he was, his activity was frequently interrupted by spells of illness, for he had developed signs of tuberculosis whilst still attending the Slade School. An important canvas called Cain was his first contribution (1888) to the Royal Academy, to the associateship of which he was elected in the year of his death. For some years before he had been a staunch supporter of the New English Art Club, to the exhibitions of which he was a regular contributor.

In October 1900 he married Katharine Symonds, the daughter of John Addington Symonds. She later became known as Dame Katharine Furse. The couple had two sons; Peter Reynolds Furse (born in 1901) and John Paul Wellington Furse (born 13 October 1904). His fondness for sport and of an open-air life found expression in his art and introduced a new, fresh and vigorous note into portraiture. There is never a suggestion of the studio or of the fatiguing pose in his portraits. The sitters appear unconscious of being painted, and are generally seen in the pursuit of their favourite outdoor sport or pastime, in the full enjoyment of life. Such are the Diana of the Uplands, the Lord Roberts and The Return from the Ride at the Tate Gallery; the four children in the Cubbing with the York and Ainsty, The Lilac Gown, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Fishing and the portraits of Lord Charles Beresford and William Johnson Cory. His revealing portrait of a younger Charles Darling who as Mr Justice Darling was later to sit on the criminal appeal of Sir Roger Casement is in the National Portrait Gallery.
Nearly all of Furse's work shows a pronounced decorative tendency. His sense of space, composition and decorative design can best be judged by his mural decorations for Liverpool Town Hall, executed between 1899 and 1902. A memorial exhibition of Furse's paintings and sketches was held at the Burlington Fine Arts Club in 1906.
He died in 1904.

Gourlay Steell fue un artista escocés nacido en 20 Calton Hill, en Edimburgo, en 1819. Hijo de John Steell, tallador de madera y Margaret Gourlay de Dundee, su hermano mayor John era un escultor de prestigio nacional.
Estudió con William Allan y Robert Scott Lauder.
Con solo 13 años exhibió su primera pieza en la Royal Scottish Academy, un modelo de galgo, y en 1835 exhibió una escultura a tamaño natural de un sabueso. Desde ese año hasta la muerte expuso casi continuamente.
Para la década de 1840 se había establecido y vivía en una hermosa casa en 33 East Claremont Street en la Ciudad Nueva de Edimburgo.
En 1872 fue nombrado pintor oficial de animales de la reina Victoria, sucediendo a Sir Edwin Landseer. En 1882 reemplazó a Sir William Fettes Douglas como curador de la Galería Nacional de Escocia. En este momento vivía con su familia en 4 Palmerston Place en el West End de Edimburgo.
En 1882 sucedió a William Fettes Douglas como conservador principal de la Galería Nacional de Escocia, sirviendo hasta su muerte, y finalmente después de un interregno fue reemplazado por Robert Gibb.
Murió en 1894 en 23 Minto Street, Edimburgo, y fue enterrado en el cementerio de Morningside, Edimburgo con su esposa Jessie Anderson, que había muerto 14 años antes.
Su hijo, David George Steell siguió sus pasos y se convirtió en artista animalista.

Gourlay Steell, Scottish artist born at 20 Calton Hill in Edinburgh, in 1819. The son of John Steell, a wood-carver and Margaret Gourlay of Dundee, his elder brother John was a sculptor of national standing.
He studied under William Allan and Robert Scott Lauder.
Aged only 13 he had his first piece displayed at the Royal Scottish Academy, a model of a greyhound, and in 1835 he displayed a full-size sculpture of a bloodhound. From that year until death he exhibited almost continually.
By the 1840s he had established himself and was living in a fine house at 33 East Claremont Street in Edinburgh's New Town.
In 1872 he was appointed the official painter of animals to Queen Victoria, succeeding Sir Edwin Landseer. In 1882 he replaced Sir William Fettes Douglas as Curator of the National Gallery of Scotland. At this time he was living with his family at 4 Palmerston Place in Edinburgh's West End.
In 1882 he succeeded William Fettes Douglas as Principal Curator of the National Gallery of Scotland, serving until death, and eventually after an inter-regnum being replaced by Robert Gibb.
He died in 1894 at 23 Minto Street, Edinburgh and was buried in Morningside Cemetery, Edinburgh with his wife Jessie Anderson who had died 14 years earlier.
His son, David George Steell followed in his footsteps and became an animal artist.
