H. R. Giger

Probablemente la última película con la que sentí MIEDO fue "Alien". La dirigió Ridley Scott, y el personaje más importante era el mismo Alien, una criatura virtualmente indestructible creada por H.R.Giger. Así descubrí su trabajo hace décadas y quedé inmediatamente enganchado.

Hans Ruedi Giger nació en Chur (Suiza) en 1940 y estudió arquitectura en Zurich, comenzando con su trabajo artístico (dibujos a tinta y pinturas al óleo) en 1964. Su primera exposición en solitario tuvo lugar dos años después. Cuando comenzó a trabajar con el aerógrafo, creó sus bien conocidos "paisajes biomecánicos" y uno de sus libros, "Necronomicon" (1977), fue la inspiración para Ridley Scott quien trabajó junto a Giger en el film "Alien". La película ganó el Oscar a los Mejores Efectos Especiales.

Sus creaciones fueron una referencia para la gente de mi generación ya que antes de Alien ya se había encargado de la portada del disco "Brain Salad Surgery" de Emerson, Lake & Palmer, y posteriormente del "Koo Koo", disco debut de Debbie Harry (Blondie). En su libro "ARh +" cuenta cómo se le ocurrió utilizar las agujas atravesando el rostro de Debbie y convertirla en la "Reina de los punks".

Por supuesto lo más inquietante y a la vez fascinante en la obra de Giger es esa fusión entre la carne y el metal en sus biomecanoides, paisajes y composiciones con oscuros contenido eróticos, sexuales y religiosos. Los cortos "High and Heimkiller" de 1967 realizados con F. M. Murer [ver al final del post], contenían ya los elementos básicos de la obra de Giger, junto con clarísimas referencias dalinianas. Su colaboración con el mundo del cine continuó con mayor o menor fortuna hasta 1995 con la secuela de "Species".

Giger siempre estuvo interesado en expandir su universo al mundo tridimensional. Su primer diseño de un entorno completo fue el Giger Bar en Tokyo, que se llevó adelante sin su apoyo ya que su idea original no pudo concretarse debido a limitaciones constructivas antiterremotos. La idea finalmente tomó forma en 1992 en Chur, su ciudad natal. Actualmente hay otro que abrió en 2003 en el Château St. Germain, Gruyères, como parte del Museo Giger.

Este Museo abrió sus puertas en 1998, alojando la mayor colección de sus obras desde los años ´60, una planta dedicada a la colección particular del artista con obras de  Salvador Dali, Ernst Fuchs, Dado, Bruno Weber y Günther Brus, entre otros muchos, y una Galería anexa donde se realizan exposiciones periódicas individuales de estos y otros artistas. Sin duda es un sitio que quiero visitar.

Probably the last movie I felt FEAR with, was "Alien". It was directed by Ridley Scott, and the most important character was the Alien itself, a virtually indestructible creature created by H. R. Giger. That's the way I discover Giger's work decades ago I was immediately hooked.

Hans Ruedi Giger was born in Chur, Switzerland in 1940 and studied architecture in Zurich, starting his artwork (ink drawings and oil paintings) in 1964. His first solo exhibition was two years later. When he start working with the airbrush, creates his best known "biomechanical dreamscapes" and one of his books, "Necronomicon" (1977), was inspirational to Ridley Scott who worked with Giger in the film "Alien". The movie won the Oscar for the Best Achievement in Visual Effects.

His creations were a reference to the people of my generation; before Alien he had designed the cover of the album "Brain Salad Surgery" by Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and later the one of the "Koo Koo" album debut of Debbie Harry (Blondie). In his book "ArH +" tells how he came to use the needles through Debbie's face and make her the "Queen of punks."

Of course the most disturbing and fascinating in Giger's work is that fusion of flesh and metal in their biomechanoids, dark landscapes and compositions with erotic, sexual and religious contents. The early short "High and Heimkiller" (1967) together ​​with F. M. Murer [you can check it at the end of this post], already contained the basic elements of Giger's work, along with clear Dalí-esque references. His collaboration with the world of cinema continued with varying degrees of success until 1995 with the sequel of "Species".

Giger was always interested in expanding its universe to three-dimensional world. His first design was a complete environment for a Bar in Tokyo, an idea that was carried out without their support since his original concept could not be performed due to constructive limitations against earthquakes. The idea took shape in 1992 in Chur, his hometown. Currently there is another one opened in 2003 in the Château St. Germain, Gruyères, as part of the Giger Museum.

This museum opened in 1998, housing the largest collection of his works from the '60s, a floor dedicated to the artist's private collection with works by Salvador Dali, Ernst Fuchs, Dado, Bruno Weber, Günther Brus, among many others, and an adjacent gallery housing individual periodic exhibitions of these and other artists. Definitely is a place I want to visit.

Otra serie que refloto, amplío y continúo desde facebook, y que en su momento me permitió descubrir cosas muy interesantes relacionadas con los libros, la literatura, bibliotecas, escritores y las demás formas artísticas asociadas a todo esto. Mi avidez lectora desde la infancia/adolescencia y mi background como aspirante a bibliotecólogo me han dejado esa adorable lapa cultural gracias a la cual cualquier cosa relacionada con el mundo del libro me llama la atención. Por eso comparto con ustedes, para estimular intereses y/o deleitar los ya asentados. Y como siempre, se aceptan aportes, sugerencias, críticas y loas (estas sí, moderadas :-). A por ello...

Another series I buoyed, enlarge and continue from facebook. It once allowed me to discover some very interesting things about books, literature, libraries, writers and other art forms associated with all this. I am an avid reader since childhood / adolescence and my background as an aspiring librarian had leave that lovely cultural limpet through which anything related to the world of books caught my attention. "El poder de los libros / The Power of Books"

Mladen Penev es un fotógrafo y diseñador gráfico nacido en Sofía (Bulgaria) en 1980. Lo descubrí casualmente por ahí a raíz de esta campaña "The Power of Books (El poder de los libros)" que hizo para la Universidad de Artes Aplicadas de Viena, en la que se graduó en 2005.

En su página web se puede ver más de su trabajo, y hay cosas muy interesantes. Añado a los pósters de la serie que compartí en su momento algunas de las imágenes de base que presenta en la sección de proyectos.

Mladen Penev is a photographer and graphic designer born in Sofia (Bulgaria) in 1980. I discovered it casually as a result of this campaign "The Power of Books" he did for the University of Applied Arts in Vienna , where he graduated in 2005.

In his website you can see more of his work, and there are very interesting things. I add to the posters of the series I shared before some of the images presented in the Projects section.

Gurbuz Doğan Ekşioğlu

Gurbuz Doğan Ekşioğlu (quién firma sus trabajos como Gurbuz) es un dibujante y diseñador gráfico turco nacido en 1954 en Mesudiye, provincia de Ordu.

Cursó estudios gráficos en el Colegio Estatal de Bellas Artes de Estambul (llamado en la actualidad Facultad de Bellas Artes de la Universidad de Mármara ), donde continúa dictando clases como profesor asistente.

Gurbuz ha estado dibujando ilustraciones y caricaturas desde 1977 y cuenta ya con un total de 64 premios, 23 de los cuales son internacionales. Ha participado en múltiples exhibiciones colectivas nacionales e internacionales y también ha expuesto individualmente en varios sitios, incluyendo una en Nueva York.

Sus trabajos transmiten un universo entre surrealista y poético, y como vemos presta atención al libro y las bibliotecas.

Gurbuz Doğan Ekşioğlu (who signs his work as Gurbuz) is a Turkish artist and graphic designer born in 1954 in Mesudiye, Ordu province.

He studied graphic studies at the State College of Fine Arts in Istanbul (now Faculty of Fine Arts at Marmara University), where he continues teaching classes as an assistant professor.

Gurbuz has been drawing illustrations and cartoons since 1977 and now has a total of 64 awards, 23 of which are international. He has participated in numerous national and international group exhibitions and has also had solo exhibitions at several places, including one in New York.

His works convey a universe between surreal and poetic, and as we can see he pay attention to books and libraries.

A raíz de la exposición que el Museo del Prado viene realizando desde hace un tiempo, con fondos del museo ruso Hermitage de San Petersburgo, descubro esta pintura de Tyranov que nos muestra la Biblioteca del Hermitage en el s.XIX. En el espacio que la web del Prado le dedica, se apunta:

"La biblioteca de Catalina II fue construida entre 1783 y la década de 1790 según un proyecto del arquitecto neoclásico Giacomo Quarenghi (1744-1817). Se componía de una larga galería y tres salas con ventanas que daban a un patio. Entre otros libros se guardaba aquí la biblioteca de Voltaire que la emperatriz compró tras su muerte. Al fondo de esta vista se ve la estatua del filósofo Jean-Antoine Houdon. Estas dependencias fueron demolidas con motivo de la creación del Nuevo Hermitage."

En cuanto al pintor, extraigo de su ficha en Wiki que nació en 1801 en Bezhetsk en una familia de clase media y estudió sus primeros años allí trasladándose posteriormente a Tver. Por razones económicas no logró terminar su preparación y debió regresar a su ciudad natal. Pasó a trabajar con su hermano pintando iconos en el Monasterio de San Nicolás-Terebenskom. Posteriomente, fue invitado por Alekséi Venetsianov para que estudiase en su escuela de artes en la villa de Safokondo. Viajó a San Petersburgo y desde 1836 fue un pupilo de Karl Briullov, mismo año en que recibió el título de miembro de la Academia Imperial de las Artes.

Sus últimos años de vida los pasó en la más extrema pobreza y murió el 3 de agosto de 1859.
