Phlegm book of pen and ink illustrations.

A collection of my pen and ink illustrations based on walls i've painted over the past few years. I've hand printed and embossed all the covers myself. It's taken a long time to get this thing done. Una colección de mis ilustraciones a pluma y tinta, basadas en los muros que he ido pintando en los últimos años. He pintado a mano y realizado el relieve en todas las portadas. It's a large edition so it shouldn't sell out too fast. To make sure everyone gets one i'm going to have to limit the online sales to x2 per customer. Please expect long delays in getting these all sent out. I'm not Amazon and i don't have a team of people working for me. I've had mix ups with postage this year so i'm sending all books out in strong card wraps and royal mail signed for.

Cara Barer es una artista que, desde Texas (USA), realiza ésta fusión entre la escultura y la fotografía con los libros como material de trabajo. 

Su obra tiene una hermosa estética, y como otros artistas que hoy en día trabajan alterando libros nos invitan a plantearnos cuestiones acerca de su  evolución, situación actual y futuro.

"Mis fotografías son en primer lugar la documentación de una evolución  física. He transformado objetos comunes en escultura en un estado de flujo. La forma como escojo investigar y buscar información es también una evolución. Espero que despierte un cuestionamiento acerca de esos cambios,  la efímera y frágil naturaleza en la cual obtenemos el conocimiento y el  futuro de los libros."

"Llegué a algunas de mis imagenes por casualidad. A otras a través de la  experimentación. Sin esos dos elementos, mi trabajo no fluiría fácilmente desde una idea hasta la siguiente. Un encuentro casual en Drew Street con las Páginas Amarillas de Houston fue la inspiración primaria para éste proyecto. Tras ese encuentro fortuito, comencé a buscar más libros y más métodos para cambiar su apariencia. Descubrí que tenía muchos libros que ya no tenían utilidad para mí y, por su contenido, para nadie más. ¿Alguien podría  necesitar un manual de Windows 95?. Tras sumergirlos en la bañera durante unas horas, tenían una nueva forma y propósito. Los libros a mitad de precio son uno de mis objetivos regulares, y una casa abandonada me proporcionó un conjunto de  libros de referencia pasados de moda, junto con su moho y abandono."

"Cuando comenzaba con el proceso, consideré en primer lugar los contenidos de cada volumen. No le dediqué más que unos segundos al "Windows 95", pero el "New Century Dictionary of the English Language" es un tesoro que, debido a  sus fascinantes ilustraciones y ejemplos arcaicos, se salvó de tomar una nueva forma. "

"Hace medio siglo los estudiantes investigaban en casa con las enciclopedias de la familia, o iban hasta la biblioteca a buscar la información que necesitaban. Ahora, teniendo un ordenador y conectándose a Internet, un estudiante tiene la posibilidad de completar su investigación sin siquiera acercarse a la biblioteca. He asumido por completo esa tecnología y no quiero estar sin ella, pero también temo que nos arrastre a confiar cada vez  menos en los libros de referencia en los próximos dos siglos."

Un apunte final: Ningún libro importante ha sido dañado en la realización de ninguna de éstas fotografías.

¿Podrías contarnos cómo creas esas esculturas con los libros para luego fotografiarlas?

No tengo un plan de trabajo cuando comienzo. Depende principalmente del tamaño del libro y del papel. Algunos libros los rocío levemente con agua para comenzar a trabajar, algunos los sumerjo completamente, otros los dejo fuera y dejo que la naturaleza inicie el proceso por mi. Utilizo rodillos, abrazaderas, pinzas de ropa, grapas, pegamento, hilo, cualquier cosa que me permita que tomen al forma que deseo. Comencé utilizando diferentes cámaras, pero últimamente me he pasado a un scanner de gran tamaño. Con el scanner puedo alcanzar mucho más detalle, y me es posible ampliar mucho más que con las cámaras que tengo.

"My photographs are primarily a documentation of a physical evolution. I have changed a common object into sculpture in a state of flux. The way we choose to research and find information is also in an evolution. "I arrive at some of my images by chance. Others, through experimentation. Without these two elements, my work would not flow easily from one idea to  the next. A random encounter on Drew Street with the Houston Yellow Pages was  the primary inspiration for this project. After that chance meeting, I began  the search for more books, and more methods to change their appearance.

I realized I owned many books that were no longer of use to me, or for that matter, anyone else. Would I ever need “Windows 95?” After soaking it in the  bathtub for a few hours, it had a new shape and purpose. Half Price Books became a regular haunt, and an abandoned house gave me a set of outdated  reference books, complete with mold and neglect. Each book tells me how to  begin according to its size, type of paper, and sometimes contents."

"As I begin the process, I first consider the contents of each volume. I  didn’t spend more than a few seconds on “Windows 95,” but the “New Century Dictionary of the English Language,” is a treasure that, because of its  fascinating illustrations, and archaic examples, saved it from taking on a  new form. Sculpting segued to thoughts on obsolescence and the relevance of libraries in this century.

Half a century ago, students researched at home with the family set of  encyclopedias, or took a trip to the library to find needed information. Now, owning a computer, and connecting to the internet gives a student the ability to complete a research paper without ever going near a library. I have fully  embraced that technology, and would not want to be without it, but, I also fear that it is rapidly leading us to rely less and less on the reference  books common in the last two centuries."

"With the discarded books that I have acquired, I am attempting to blur the  line between objects, sculpture, and photography. This project has become a  journey that continues to evolve.

A final note – No important books have been injured during the making of any of these photographs."

SB: Can you discuss how you create these book sculptures then shoot them?

CB: I don’t have a set plan when I start.  It mainly depends on the size of the book, and the paper.  Some books I lightly spray with water to begin with, some I immerse in water – others I set out side and let nature start the process for me.  I use rollers, clamps, clothespins, staples, glue, string, - whatever it takes to make it stay in the form I desire.  I started using different cameras, but have ultimately turned to an oversized scanner.  With the scanner, I can achieve much more detail, and am able to enlarge much more than I could with the cameras that I have.

Librofilia (VII) - Mike Stilkey

Michael "Mike" James Stilkey Jr.

Oriundo de Los Ángeles, nacido en 1975, Mike Stilkey siempre se sintió atraído a pintar y dibujar no sólo en papel tradicional, carátulas de discos y páginas de libros, sino en los libros mismos. Utilizando una mezcla de tinta, lápiz de color, pintura y laca, Stilkey representa un melancólico y a veces caprichoso elenco de personajes habitando espacios ambiguos en narrativas de fantasía y cuentos de hadas.

Un persistente sentimiento de pérdida e insinuada nostalgia a nivel emocional conduce al espectador hacia la introspección con una mezcla de poesía caprichosa, agudeza y misterio. Su trabajo tiene reminiscencias del expresionismo alemán del período de Weimar y su estilo puede describirse algo así como una mezcla del de artistas que van desde Edward Gorey hasta Egon Schiele.

P: ¿Dónde consigues todos esos libros?

R: Cuando me mudé a Altadena, visité una librería local y les pregunté si tenían algunos libros que fueran a descartar. No parecían estar muy por la labor de donar libos para mi causa, hasta que les mostré algunas imágenes de lo que hacía con los libros. Ahora, cuando tienen sobrantes de sus liquidaciones, me dejan revolver entre lo que no vendieron y llevarme algunos libros que quiero. También busco libros gratuitos en clasificados y ocasionalmente recorro librerías de segunda mano. Intento utilizar libros que serán descartados, así puedo darles una segunda vida.

Los Angeles native Mike Stilkey has always been attracted to painting and drawing not only on vintage paper, record covers and book pages, but on the books themselves. Using a mix of ink, colored pencil, paint and lacquer, Stilkey depicts a melancholic and at times a whimsical cast of characters inhabiting ambiguous spaces and narratives of fantasy and fairy tales.

A lingering sense of loss and longing hints at emotional depth and draws the viewer into their introspective thrall with a mixture of capricious poetry, wit, and mystery. His work is reminiscent of Weimar-era German expressionism and his style has been described by some as capturing features of artists ranging from Edward Gorey to Egon Schiele.

AM: Where do you get all those books?

MS: When I first moved to Altadena, I visited a local library and asked them if they had any books they were going to get rid of. They didn’t seem too into the idea of donating books to my cause until I showed them some pictures of what I do with the books. Now, when they have leftovers from any of their book sales, they let me pick through what didn’t sell and take home any books that I want. I also look for free books on craigslist or hit up thrift stores occasionally. I really try to use books that are being discarded so I can give them a second life.

Kylie Stillman nació en Melbourne, Australia, en 1975. Allí mismo vive y desarrolla su actividad artística. Su trabajo consiste en esculpir pilas de libros creando unos maravillosos relieves en muchos de los cuales los protagonistas son los árboles, con lo cual de algún modo reinvierte el proceso; el libro que proviene del árbol vuelve a él.

Banksia es un género de unas 80 especies, de la familia Proteaceae. Son nativas de Australia; se encuentran por todo el territorio, preferentemente en las áreas más áridas. Se reconocen fácilmente por sus puntos característicos de la flor y "conos que dan fruto". Banksia es una flor silvestre australiana bien conocida y una planta de jardín muy popular. Crecen desde árboles hasta arbustos; los árboles alcanzan unos 25 metros de altura. Se los conoce comúnmente como: Banksias ó árboles australianos de madreselva.

Kylie ha presentado su trabajo en numerosas muestras desde el año 2003, convirtiéndose en un referente en esta modalidad artística (la escultura/alteración de libros) notablemente difundida últimamente. Hay que pasarse por su sitio web para conocerla un poco más.

Kylie Stillman born in Melbourne, Australia in 1975. She lives and work there. 

We are all aware that books come from trees, but artist Kylie Stillman readapts them by turning them back into a version of their original form through sculpture. Carving carfeully into stacks of books, Stillman creates these beautifully delicate inverted reliefs that brings us a whole world of trees and birds through thoughtful silhouettes.

Stillman’s artwork moves away from the boundaries of the books by crafting them into a new life, distorting their original form and use. She engraves the book like a slab of stone, as opposed to using it as a two-dimensional canvas.

The works create a reminder of how objects we use each day come from the natural world and have been reconstructed to become something artificial. For example Little Room, her 2007 installation, provided a new natural habitat for the book creatures and forms through the collection of book images. English text from here
