Los perros de / The Dogs of Francis de Blas

Francis de Blas es un pintor nacido en Bilbao en 1960 especializado en retratos, y lo que más nos interesa, en retratar perros de una manera muy peculiar.

Francis comenzó en la ilustración y el comic a principios de los '80, y ya a mediados de la década se decanta por la pintura, destacando entre otras la influencia de Klimt.

Desde 1986 comienza a exponer y desde 1990 a profundizar en las técnicas pictóricas de los grandes maestros clásicos, radicándose en París durante casi 9 años y perfeccionándose en el Museo del Louvre.

De regreso en España, tras varios años de exposiciones y trabajos por encargo, su obra se ha popularizado gracias a sus retratos de perros. En ellos el artista concibe, a veces con el dueño de la mascota, un diseño de vestuario y pose que confieren al animal una personalidad inspirada en diversas épocas históricas, sin perder por ello su carácter canino.

Los perros que Francis retrata desde 1989 han sido objeto de innumerables artículos, exposiciones, entrevistas y ha recibido varios reconocimientos por ellos.

"Posan mucho mejor que las personas en sesiones fotográficas, que son fundamentales para disponer de un amplio surtido de posiciones. Y no es preciso estrujarse las meninges; una rodajita de jamón basta para tenerlos extasiados e inmóviles el tiempo suficiente".

En éste tipo de trabajo confluyen las dos pasiones de Francis: el retrato y la historia. Según comenta: "Me permite estar cerca de la pintura que me gusta. Tengo una muy buena biblioteca de arte y me apasiona investigar, encontrar un ropaje, ir descubriendo retratistas del XVII y del XVIII..."

"Tengo una memoria fotográfica bastante buena, y en cuanto veo al perro enseguida selecciono el traje, es como un 'flash'". Los dueños normalmente se fían del criterio de De Blas, que ha pintado desde atuendos del siglo XIX hasta modelos Chanel o años 40. Además de canes, también ha inmortalizado a otras mascotas, como pájaros, pero curiosamente, nunca gatos: "La gente de los gatos es diferente...", apunta De Blas.

Francis de Blas is a painter born in Bilbao in 1960 specializing in portraits, and what interests us, in portraying dogs in a very peculiar way.

Francis started in illustration and comic in the early '80s, and by the middle of the decade on painting, highlighting among others the influence of Klimt.

In 1986 he began to exhibit and since 1990 to deepen the painting techniques of the great classical masters, settling in Paris for nearly nine years and refining his technique in the Louvre Museum.

Back in Spain, after several years of commissioned work and exhibitions, his work has become popular with his portraits of dogs. In them, the artist conceives, sometimes with the pet owner, a costume design that give the animal pose a personality inspired by various historical periods, without losing its canine character.

Dogs portrayed by Francis since 1989 have been the subject of countless articles, presentations, interviews and has received several awards for them.

"They pose a lot better than people at photo shoots, which are essential to provide a wide range of positions. And is not something specially difficult, a slice of ham is enough to keep them entranced and motionless long enough".

This kind of work merge the two passions of Francis: the portrait and history. As he said: "I can be close to the painting that I like. I have a very good library of art and I love research, find a garment, to discover portraitists of the seventeenth and eighteenth ..."

"I have a photographic memory pretty good, and as I see the dog quickly select the suit, is like a 'flash'." The owners usually trust the judgment of De Blas, who has painted since nineteenth century outfits to 40s Chanel models. Besides dogs, also has immortalized other pets such as birds, but curiously, never cats: "People of cats is different ..." says De Blas.

George Minne fue un escultor belga nacido en Gante en 1886.

Inició sus estudios en la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Gante y los prosiguió en la de Bruselas. Entre 1914 y 1919 fue profesor de dibujo al natural en la Academia de Gante. Perteneció al primer grupo de artistas de la llamada Escuela de Sint-Martens-Latem, pueblo situado en las cercanías de Gante donde se establecieron numerosos artistas simbolistas. Allí murió en 1941 y allí está enterrado.

La fuerza emocional de la obra de Minne fue alabada a partir de 1886 por los poetas simbolistas belgas, como Maurice Maeterlinck, Émile Verhaeren y Grégoire Leroy. Con Maeterlinck mantuvo amistad e ilustró sus obras Serres chaudes (1888) y Soeur Béatrice (1900). Minne participó en el Salón de la Cruz Roja de París, organizado por Josephin Péladan. Su modelo artístico fue Rodin, aunque Minne no trató de imitar la fuerza plástica del artista francés y se decantó por un gran refinamiento, inspirado en el arte medieval. La obra de Minne está en sintonía con ciertos artistas del Expresionismo alemán como Ernst Barlach, Käthe Kollwitz y Wilhelm Lehmbruck.

A partir de 1895 desarrolló uno de sus temas artísticos más característicos: las figuras de adolescentes desnudos, introvertidos, arrodillados, con la cabeza inclinada, frágiles y aislados del mundo. En su rechazo al pathos barroco, Minne se aproxima al estilo de Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. De hecho, existe una conexión manifiesta entre el Enfant prodigue y el Pauvre Pêcheur: en ambos casos, se trata de personajes introvertidos y ensimismados. Henry van de Velde difundió el trabajo de Minne en los ambientes modernistas; en Viena fue apreciado por artistas como Klimt, Schiele y Oskar Kokoschka.

George (Georges) Minne was a Belgian artist and sculptor born in Ghent, Belgium in 1866, famous for his idealized depictions of man's inner spiritual conflicts. A contemporary of Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, Minne shows many similarities in both form and subject matter to the Viennese Secessionists, the fathers of Art Nouveau.

In 1879, Minne studied painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, then in the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels from 1885 through 1889, and in 1891 was elected a member of the arts group Les XX. He had made his first visit to Paris in 1886 where he met the writers Maurice Maeterlinck and Gregore Le Roy, who introduced him to the French Symbolists. Minne returned to Paris in 1890 and asked Auguste Rodin for permission to work in his studio, Rodin told him, "I have nothing to teach you." In 1892, Minne married Josephine Destanberg, the daughter of a Ghent poet. He then spent most of his time drawing and sculpting. He established his own bronze foundry in 1910-14, in Ghent, which was managed by his son. During World War I he fled to Wales, but returned after the war, and taught drawing.

His most famous works are the "Kneeling Youth" series of sculptures, including "The Fountain of Kneeling Youths", a bronze-cast fountain in his home town of Ghent (the Marble originals are at the Folkwang Museum in Essen, Germany), as well as various smaller sculptures in private and museum holdings, such as the pair of "Kneeling Youths" at the Neue Galerie in New York City and the plaster of "Kneeling Youth" (1898) acquired in 2011 by the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.

La "Fuente de los Jóvenes Arrodillados" es sin duda el grupo escultórico más famoso de Minne. Cinco jóvenes desnudos idénticos, en actitud reflexiva, están arrodillados al borde de un cuenco. Imitando las Sombras de Rodin, Minne hace uso aquí de la antigua técnica de la repetición. El ritmo decorativo confiere a la obra una cierta levedad, a la vez que refuerza la expresión. Las frágiles figuras de los jóvenes, ejecutados en un lenguaje simple y lineal, expresan sentimientos de soledad y nostalgia. La figura del joven arrodillado junto al agua evoca el mito del semidios Narciso, quien se enamora de su propio reflejo y acaba arruinado por el deseo del inalcanzable objeto de su amor.

El concepto data de 1898. Minne hizo varias versiones en yeso, mármol y bronce. En 1900 el coleccionista alemán Karl Ernst Osthaus encargó una versión en mármol que hoy en día se muestra en el Folkwang Museum de Essen. La del Museo de Bellas Artes de Gante es la única de yeso que sobrevive.

Hay también varias esculturas más pequeñas en colecciones privadas y museos, como el par de "Jóvenes arrodillados" en la Neue Galerie de New York City y el yeso homónimo de 1898 adquirido en 2011 por la National Gallery de Victoria, Melbourne (Australia).

The fountain with kneeling youths is undoubtedly George Minne's most famous statue group. Five identical, introverted, naked young men are kneeling on the edge of a basin. In imitation of Rodin Shadows, Minne here used the ancient technique of repetition. The decorative rhythm gives the work a certain lightness, whilst reinforcing the expression. The fragile young figures, executed in a simple linear form language, express feelings of loneliness and longing. The figure of the young man kneeling at the water recalls the myth of the demi-god Narcissus, who falls in love with his reflection and to ruin the desire for the unattainable object of his love.

The concept of it dates from 1898. Minne made several versions in plaster, marble and bronze. In 1900, the German collector Karl Ernst Osthaus commissioned a marble version that is now in the Folkwang Museum in Essen. De fontein der geknielden from the Museum of Fine Arts of Ghent is the only surviving plaster model.

There are also various smaller sculptures in private and museum holdings, such as the pair of "Kneeling Youths" at the Neue Galerie in New York City and the plaster of "Kneeling Youth" (1898) acquired in 2011 by the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.
