Hans Kanters

Hans Kanters es un artista holandés nacido en Ámsterdam en 1947. Ha realizado pinturas desde 1967, litografías desde 1986 y esculturas desde 1994.

De formación autodidacta, ha vivido y trabajado en Holanda, el sur de España, Formentera y el sur de Francia. Desde 1993 su hogar ha sido Ibiza.

Su obra se ha exhibido en Holanda, Bélgica, Francia, Alemania, Suiza, España, Estados Unidos y Japón, en galerías y ferias de arte, y hay trabajos suyos en colecciones de estos países. En el Museo Jan van der Togt, en Amstelveen, hay una colección permanente de sus pinturas.

«La gente debe ser capaz de obtener más de lo que yo he puesto ahí, en caso contrario, algo debo haber hecho mal. No es sólo cuestión de significado; es la emoción, humor e ironía, ternura y frustración, incluso la rabia que intento transmitir»

Como autodidacta, durante décadas Kanters ha estado haciendo las cosas a su manera, sin prestar la menor atención a las tendencias de la moda. Él simplemente es quien es. Después de su período erótico de los '70, el surrealismo ha dominado su obra desde los '80, y su paleta se ha vuelto más directa, los colores menos densos. Además de su obra gráfica, como litografías y aguafuertes, desde 1994 ha estado haciendo estatuas de bronce.

«El pintor Hans Kanter, es el típico ejemplo de alguien que ha nacido para ser pintor. Para empezar, esto quiere decir que desde su más tierna infancia, fue uno de esa pequeña, si no infinitesimal minoría, que ha abrazado su propio camino como artista. A menudo no ha sido un camino fácil, porque el pintor también tiene vida en su tiempo libre como el que más, de modo que todas las pulsiones procedentes de la sociedad en que vive también dejarán en él sus huellas inevitables.

Él, sin embargo, sigue su propio camino, a pesar de la experiencia de ciertos síntomas que pueden dominar una era. También significa que su individualismo es tanto una forma de vida como un modo de creación. En su postura personal en lo relativo a los instrumentos con que se expresa, que le han sido transmitidas a través de la larga historia de la pintura, su punto de partida no es una actitud de protesta, sino una síntesis entre lo que es y lo que es capaz de ser. Y es esta capacidad, tomada literalmente como dominio de la pintura, la que ha llegado a dominar por derecho propio. Y para la que aprentemente ha nacido.»

«La imaginación reina aquí en la totalidad de un cosmos con criaturas del reino animal y humano, y una flora y fauna nunca vistas pintadas con un hábil equilibrio entre la atención escrupulosa y la ironía. El espectador exclusivamente orientado estéticamente, que sólo busca comprender las pinturas de Kanters por sus aspectos externos, por su funcionalidad decorativa, se acerca a la obra de este pintor con la mentalidad equivocada. Un espectador de este tipo no está capacitado para ver mucho, o comprender verdaderamente lo poco ve. A lo sumo, lo externo de la obra podría llevarle a la conclusión de que está tratando con un pintor que es en cada pedacito un europeo, unido por caminos lejanos y oblicuos al espíritu crítico de un mundo humanista y simultáneamente subversivo como el representado hace siglos en el "Elogio de la locura" de Erasmo o en las fantasías obsesivas de Hieronymus Bosch.»

Hans Kanters was born in Amsterdam in 1947, and has been making paintings since 1967, lithographs since 1986 and sculptures since 1994. An autodidact, he has lived and worked in the Netherlands, southern Spain, Formentera, and southern France. Ever since 1993, Ibiza has been his home.

Hans Kanters has had exhibitions in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, the United States and Japan in galleries and art fairs. His work is in collections in these same countries. In the Museum Jan van der Togt in Amstelveen is a permanent collection of paintings of Hans Kanters.

«People ought to be able to get more out of it than I put into it, otherwise I have been doing something wrong. It is not just about the meaning, it is the emotion, humour and irony, tenderness and frustration, even rage that I am trying to convey.» 

As an autodidact, for decades Kanters has been doing things his own way without paying the least bit of attention to trends or fashion, he simply is who he is. After his erotic period in the 1970s, surrealism has been dominant in his work since the 1980s and his palette has become more direct, the colours less dense. In addition to his graphic work such as lithographs and etchings, ever since 1994 he has also been making bronze statues.

«The painter Hans Kanters is a typical example of a born painter. To start with, that means that from early childhood, within a small if not infinitesimal minority, he has stuck to his own path as an artist. It has oftentimes not been an easy path because the painter is also alive in his leisure time and can take as active a part in the social life around him as anyone else, so that all the impulses coming from the society he lives in will also leave their inevitable traces on him.

He nonetheless goes his own way, despite the experience that certain symptoms can dominate an era. It also means that his individualism is just as much a way of life as a mode of creation. In his personal stance as regards the instruments he expresses himself with, which have been borne throughout a long history of painting, his point of departure is not an attitude of protest but a synthesis between who he is and what he is capable of. And it is this capability, taken literally as proficiency in painting, which he has come to master in his own right. And which he has apparently been born to.»

«Imagination reigns supreme here in a totality of a cosmos with creatures of the human and animal kingdom and hitherto unseen flora and fauna painted with know how balancing between fastidious attention and irony. The solely aesthetically oriented viewer who only seeks to comprehend Kanters’ paintings for their externals, for their decorative functionality, is approaching the oeuvre of this painter with the wrong mentality. A viewer of this kind is not apt to see much, or to truly fathom what little he does see. At most, the externals of the work might lead him to conclude that he is dealing with a painter who is every bit a European, linked by distant and oblique pathways to the critical spirit of a humanist and simultaneously subversive world like the one depicted centuries ago in Erasmus ‘Praise of Folly’ or in the obsessing fantasies of Hieronymus Bosch.»
