Alexander Khokhlov es un artista ruso nacido en 1982, que trabaja en Moscú realizando fotografía artística, de belleza, moda, callejera y comercial.
Al principio se interesó por la fotografía en vivo. Sin embargo, a fines de 2008, después de asistir a su primera clase magistral del fotógrafo Vladimir Kalinin, la perspectiva de Alex cambió y rápidamente se interesó en trasladar sus fotografías al estudio.
Las popularísimas series "Belleza extraña / Weird Beauty" y "2D or not 2D", fueron creadas en 2012 y 2013, en colaboración con la artista del maquillaje Valeriya Kutsan. Una mezcla de arte facial, fotografía y post-producción, permitieron la creación de estas imágenes.

En 2013 Alexander comenzó a trabajar a dúo con su esposa, la diseñadora y artista del maquillaje Veronica Ershova. La serie "Historias de la mesa" combina fotografía y filología, y en ella los autores muestran sus experimentos con juegos de palabras y paráfrasis.
Actualmente Alexander y Veronica trabajan en el proyecto llamado "Formas e ilusiones". La nueva serie continúa el reto del autor de transformar a la gente de diferentes formas. Este proyecto combina técnicas del arte facial, fotografía y decoración.

«El reto principal de la serie 2D or not 2D era hacer las imágenes planas. Como sabes, nuestros rostros tienen volumen, y la luz acentúa este volumen en las caras. El desafío para Valeriya era maquillar a un modelo de tal modo que se viera completamente como una pintura, y mi tarea era hacer que la luz fuera plana y no incorporara volumen o profundidad en la imagen. Esto no es usual para mí y para muchos fotógrafos, porque me gusta el volumen y la profundidad que crean las luces y sombras. En este caso era lo opuesto. Este reto fue consecuencia de la idea principal de nuestro proyecto.»

«No tenemos buenas instituciones de fotografía en Rusia, así que tuve que asistir a cursos, clases magistrales, conferencias y ver videos por mí mismo. No era un gran problema entre 2007 y 2009, pero hoy en día es realmente difícil encontrar un buen profesor de fotografía en Moscú. Cualquiera con una cámara digital se cree un maestro.»

«El momento de más orgullo es cuando estás mirando el resultado final de una idea. Porque la idea es sólo el principio. El proceso de realización es realmente duro: encontrar el equipo, modelos, organizar el estudio, conseguir decoración y accesorios, las localizaciones, construir el esquema de iluminación, retocar la imagen, y así sucesivamente. Y cuando estás mirando la imagen final y te gusta, ese es el momento de mayor orgullo. Porque ves tu propia alma en la obra.»

Serie Jardín blanco / White Garden Series
Alexander Khokhlov is a beauty, fashion, street, fine art, and commercial photographer from Moscow, Russia, born in 1982.
Alexander was first impressed by live performance photography. However, at the end of 2008 after attending his first studio master-class by photographer Vladimir Kalinin, Alex’s perspective changed and he quickly became interested in moving his photography into the studio.
The wildly popular series Weird Beauty and 2D or not 2D were created in 2012 and 2013 in collaboration with the make-up artist Valeriya Kutsan. A mixture of face art, photography and post-production allowed the creation of these images.

In 2013 Alexander started to work in duo with his wife - designer and make-up artist Veronica Ershova. The series Table Stories combined photography and philology, as authors showed off their experiments with word games and paraphrases.
This time Alexander and Veronica are working on the project called Shapes and illusions. The new series continue author's challenge to transform people into different forms. This project combines the techniques of face-art, photography and decoration.

«The main challenge of 2D or not 2D series was to make the image flat. You know, how our faces have volume and the light mostly accentuates this volume of the face. Valeriya’s challenge was to put make-up on a model in a way where she looks absolutely like the picture; and my task was to make the light flat and not bring volume or depth into the image. This is unusual for me and for many photographers because I like the volume and depth which light/shadow creates. In this case everything was opposite. This challenge was a consequence of our project’s main idea.»

It was not a big problem from 2007-2009, but at the present time it’s really hard to find a good photography teacher in Moscow – everyone with a digital camera thinks that he is a master.»

«The proudest moment is when you are looking at the finished result of an idea. Because the idea is just the beginning. The process of realization is really hard – to find the team, models, to organize the studio, find decorations and props, properties and locations, build the light scheme, retouch image and so on. And when you are looking at the final image and you like it – this is the proudest moment. Because you see your own soul in the work.»
