Victoria Selbach es una pintora estadounidense nacida en Pittsburgh 1960.
Estudió dibujo y pastel en el Museo Carnegie Mellon de Pittsburgh y continuó sus clases de arte en la Universidad Carnegie Mellon. Sus años en la Universidad le proporcionaron una amplia gama de trabajos de curso, incluyendo dibujo de modelos del natural y estudio de anatomía en la morgue del Pitt Medical School. «Mi madre me animó desde muy joven, celebrando cada creación temprana. Dudo seriamente que tenga algún 'talento' especial, pero ese tipo de refuerzo positivo, aprobación y apreciación afecta tu autoestima y valor. Me hizo sentir bien conmigo misma y me impulsó hacia el próximo proyecto. También me hizo sentir "especial" en el sentido de que está bien ser diferente. Yo era un bicho raro en mi entorno. Mis hermanos estaban afuera montando motos de cross, autos de carrera y jugando en el granero mientras yo tenía alergias al polen, la hierba, los caballos, y me quedaba dentro para dibujar, imaginar y crear. Habiendo crecido en una zona semi rural a las afueras de Pittsburgh, donde la cerveza, el fútbol y la caza de venados estaban de moda, no veía la hora de escapar, tomar riesgos, llegar a la ciudad de Nueva York y asistir a la Parsons School of Design.»

«Las primeras obras de arte que me impactaron fueron las pinturas e ilustraciones religiosas con las que tropecé creciendo como católica. La pesada y espeluznante carga intrigó mi imaginación y curiosidad. Su fuerte contraste con mi alegre y alegre infancia insinuaba algo más oscuro, más adulto, algo que debía temerse y por lo que a la vez te sentías atraída. Es el peso físico de esas piezas, no los aspectos de fantasía que puedo ver en mi trabajo actual. The same woman resting in a different chair met by the dramatic distinction of our perspective. The appenstance of where we sit on the earth, the random call of place that overshadows all that is of greater importance. We imagine a barrier, separating us from what we perceive as bad or different, which reflects an illusion that we perceive as good.

«Me atrae la creación de representaciones de mujeres a tamaño mayor que el natural, para defender el verdadero poder de ver y celebrar realmente a las mujeres. Suelo bromear con que después de tantos años en la moda, simplemente no me interesaba pintar a una mujer con ropa. Pero es mucho más que eso. El cuerpo es hermoso, la forma en que atrapa la luz, la forma en que una mujer siente el calor de la luz que recorre su cuerpo, la forma en que nuestro verdadero ser puede ser liberado cuando dejamos de simular con adornos y accesorios. La ropa puede contar una historia y en las manos adecuadas incluso puede transmitir emoción. Pero el desnudo es puro, honesto, natural, completo. «Mi trabajo comienza con una conexión con las mujeres. Elegimos un día con luz increíble y pasamos horas persiguiendo las intersecciones de luz y sombra. La mayor parte del tiempo que paso con la modelo consiste simplemente en movernos de un lugar a otro en la casa y el jardín en busca de una luz increíble donde ella pueda perderse en el momento.
El foco está siempre en la luz; es lo que libera a la musa para disfrutar realmente de la aventura. Cada modelo con la que he trabajado se siente cautivada con el proceso y cómo la hace sentir. Victoria Selbach is an American painter born in Pittsburgh 1960.
She studied drawing and pastel at the Carnegie Mellon Museum of Pittsburgh and continued on to art classes at Carnegie Mellon University. Her years at CMU provided a broad range of course work including drawing from live models and studying anatomy at the Pitt Medical School Morgue. Afterwards, she moved to New York City and graduated from Parsons School of Design with a degree in Fashion Design.

Tara, la diosa de la compasión universal y la madre de la liberación, representa la acción iluminada. Tara nació de lágrimas de compasión. Avalokiteshvara miró un mundo de sufrimientos y lloró. Una Tara nació de las lágrimas del ojo izquierdo y la otra de las del derecho. Juntas simbolizan la compasión sin fin, trabajando día y noche para aliviar el sufrimiento. /
Tara, the goddess of universal compassion and the mother of liberation, represents enlightened action. Tara was born out of tears of compassion. Avalokiteshvara looked upon the world of suffering and wept. One Tara was born from the tears of the left eye and the other from those of the right. Together they symbolize unending compassion, laboring day and night to relieve suffering.

«I was encouraged from a young age by my mom who celebrated every early creation. I seriously doubt I had any special ‘talent’ but that sort of positive reinforcement, approval, and appreciation impacts your self identity and worth. It made me feel good about myself and spring-boarded me onto the next project. It also made me feel ‘special’ in the sense that it’s alright to be different. I was a bit of a bird of a different feather in my surroundings. My brothers were outside riding dirt bikes, racing cars, and playing in the hay barn while I had allergies to pollen, grass, horses, and stayed inside to draw, imagine, and create. Growing up in a semi-rural area just outside Pittsburgh where beer drinking, football, and deer hunting were all the rage, I could not wait to escape, take risks, get to NYC, and attend Parsons School of Design.»

Parvati’s numerous aspects reflect the Hindu belief that the feminine has universal range and her gender is not a limiting condition.

«The first artworks that had an impact on me where the religious paintings and illustrations that I stumbled on growing up Catholic. The heavy laden creepiness intrigued my imagination and curiosity. Their stark contrast to my sunny cheery childhood hinted at something darker, more adult, something to be feared and yet drawn to. It is the physical weight of those pieces not the fantasy aspects that I can see in my current work. They had an ability to pull the viewer in, to create a desire to know the emotion, to experience empathy.»
Citing artists from Diego Rivera to Jenny Saville as influences, a strong conviction that women are beautiful as they are remains at the core of Selbach’s artistic mission. Showing women as they truly are, most of Selbach’s models appear in everyday, domestic settings, sitting by the window or glancing in the mirror. For the most part they feel unposed, adjusting their hair or scratching their neck, portraying visual strength and subtle inner beauty.

«The vast majority of women I have painted are individuals I know, love, and deeply respect. Most often, I will approach a muse and ask her to work with me, but sometimes friends step forward and express a real desire to collaborate. I have done commissions. Those who reach out to me must sense a certain shared chemistry so the results are wonderful and often start friendships. At times I find myself overwhelmed by the power and radiance of a woman on the subway. So far I haven’t successfully found a way to approach strangers, but beauty and inspiring women are everywhere.»

"Mary as Muse" captures the grace and power of one unique woman, completely at ease, fully present yet cloaked in mystery. As the light partially reveals what is present the shadows hint at all that is just beyond our current understanding.
«I am drawn to creating larger-than-life size depictions of women to champion the true power of really seeing and celebrating women. I joke that after all those years in fashion I just simply was not interested in painting a woman in clothing. But it’s much more than that. The body is gorgeous, the way it catches the light, the way a woman feels the warmth of the light roll across her body, the way our true selves can be released when we drop all pretense, accouterments and embellishments. Clothing can tell a story and in the right hands can even convey emotion. But the nude is pure, honest, natural, complete. It is also a powerful thing for a women to own her image, to present herself naturally, confronting historical bigotry, and rejecting the burden of a legacy of prejudicial lies. There is power in lifting the cultural veil.»

«My work starts with a connection to the women. We choose a day with incredible light and spend hours chasing the intersections of light and shadow. Most of the time spent with the model is simply moving from place to place in the house and garden looking for incredible light where she can loose herself in the moment.
The focus is always on the light, which frees the muse to really enjoy the adventure. Every model I have ever worked with is enthralled with the process and how it makes her feel. I capture hundreds of digital images to use for reference. I paint in the studio alone, developing a dialogue with the piece until I can hear her reach out and speak to me.»

‘Mille Fleurs’ nudes are a collection of amazing women who have inspired me on many levels and contribute their deep personal beauty and resonance to the work. The series is named for ‘Mille Fleurs’ a Guggenheim cottage on the North Shore of Long Island where the unique setting and incredible light allows for magical interactions with the muse.
