Desde 2015 el dúo artístico integrado por Joan Coderch y Javier Malavia viene desarrollando un proyecto basado en la escultura figurativa, creando piezas de una exquisita belleza y gran sensibilidad, expresando emociones en bronce, con el cuerpo humano y su expresividad plástica como referente y fuente de inspiración. Les dejo una selección de obras y algo de información sobre los artistas.
Since 2015 the artistic duo formed by Joan Coderch and Javier Malavia has been developing a project based on figurative sculpture, creating pieces of exquisite beauty and great sensitivity, expressing emotions in bronze, with the human body and its plastic expression as a reference and source of inspiration. Joan Coderch se licenció en la Facultad de Bellas Artes de Barcelona en 1984, Javier Malavia en la Facultad de Bellas Artes de San Carlos de Valencia en 1993. Tras conocerse descubrieron sus afinidades artísticas que los llevó a embarcarse en este nuevo proyecto que sigue la línea de maestros de la figuración como Maillol, Rodin, Marini y Bourdelle.
Juntos trabajan desde 2015 como Coderch&Malavia, un proyecto de escultura en el que el cuerpo humano es el centro del discurso plástico. Un universo de formas significantes en torno a la figura humana idealizada. Y un horizonte claro: la Belleza como herramienta diaria de trabajo.

JC: Trabajamos los dos en el mismo proyecto desde el inicio. Estamos totalmente implicados en el desarrollo de la pieza.
JM: Desde el principio tenemos que hacer una puesta en común. Siempre vamos buscando cosas que nos han llamado la atención, que nos han emocionado de alguna forma, es lo que ponemos en común, y si encontramos ese punto de conexión entre los dos, sabemos que podemos trabajar con esa creación.

Parte de la originalidad de su labor reside en su forma de trabajo ya que elaboran sus obras a cuatro manos, compartiendo la creación de las piezas. Joan y Javier, además ponen en común los valores de su creación artística como el compromiso social con la igualdad, el medio ambiente y la infancia.
Su proyecto destaca por la honestidad y la autenticidad: exploran diferentes actitudes humanas frente a la vida, donde está muy presente el mimetismo con la naturaleza, la búsqueda de la emoción a través de la obra, la muestra de los sentimientos que gobiernan al hombre, el encuentro entre figura y actitud, y la mezcla de la belleza y la disciplina. El ser humano es el centro de su arte.

Respecto a la elección de lo figurativo, los artistas comentan:
JM: Hemos elegido el lenguaje en el que mejor nos comunicamos. Podemos notar que la gente nos entiende más. Nosotros lo figurativo lo entendemos mejor.
JC: Te sientes más cómodo, es algo que te sale más de dentro.

JM: Hay veces que es a veces el propio modelo (el que dispara el proceso). Nos gusta tanto el cuerpo humano, que a veces llamamos un modelo para trabajar de una forma, y cuando está aquí posando, de repente por la pose natural que tiene, hay un click y dices "qué bonito", y esa es la pieza, empieza desde ahí. Muchas veces no viene desde el exterior, se genera ahí.
JC: El modelo es básico para nuestro tipo de trabajo, en el cual la belleza y las emociones de las bellas cosas son básicas para que transmitan al espectador lo que nosotros queremos. Y el proceso técnicamente es que cuando tenemos unas ideas hacemos unos bocetos en cera, y a partir de ahí escogemos dentro de los bocetos que hemos hecho para pasar a la siguiente fase, que es empezar a pensar el tamaño en el cual queremos desarrollar esa pieza. Eso es muy complicado, porque ver el tamaño de la pieza es de las cosas que cuestan. Nuestras obras casi todas son en bronce, excepto alguna cosa en aluminio.

Han recibido el Premio Reina Sofía de Pintura y Escultura con su obra “Hamlet” en 2017 y el Primer Premio en la 14ª edición del Concurso ARC International Salón, con la escultura “The Swan Dance” en 2019. También figuran entre sus distinciones la Medalla de Escultura Mariano Benlliure, el TIAC Art Prize o el Arcadia Contemporary Award.
Además del reconocimiento nacional e internacional, su trabajo forma parte de colecciones privadas en varios países de Europa, Asia y América. Muestran su obra en exposiciones colectivas e individuales tanto en entidades privadas como en espacios públicos. Muchos lugares de Francia, Estados Unidos (Miami), México, Italia o Grecia han tenido la oportunidad de disfrutar de sus obras donde regularmente exponen. Estuvieron presentes en la ciudad de Berlín con su obra “Learning to Fly” en la Urban Nation Biennial en septiembre de 2019.

Joan Coderch graduated from Barcelona’s Faculty of Fine Art in 1984. Javier Malavia graduated from Valencia’s San Carlos Faculty of Fine Art in 1993. Once they met, they discovered their artistic similarities, which led to their undertaking this new project that follows in the footsteps of masters of figuration such as Maillol, Rodin, Marini and Bourdelle.
They work together since 2015 as Coderch&Malavia, a sculpture project in which the human body is at the core of the plastic discourse. A universe of meaningful forms centred on the idealised human figure. And a clear horizon: Beauty as an everyday tool.

Obra inspirada en la fuerza expresiva de los movimientos de danza butoh japonesa, creada en 1950 por Kazuo Ohno y Tatsumi Hijikata. El bailarín de butoh no intenta hablar a través del cuerpo, sino que el cuerpo hable por sí mismo.
Work inspired by the expressive force of the Japanese butoh dance movements created in 1950 by Kazuo Ohno and Tatsumi Hijikata. The butoh dancer does not try to speak through the body, but the body speaks for itself.

JC: We work both in the same project since the beginning. We are both involved in the development of every piece.
JM: We join efforts from the beginning. We look constantly for subjects that catch our attention, and those that move us the most are the one we discuss, and if we find the connection points between the two of us, then we know we can start working on that project.

Part of the originality of their art lies in the way they work, since they make their sculptures four-handed, thereby sharing in the creation of the pieces. Joan and Javier also have in common the values of their artistic creation, such as social commitment with regards to equality, the environment and childhood.
Their project stands out due to its honesty and authenticity: they explore different human attitudes to life, in which mimicking nature, the search for emotion through the work, the revealing of the feelings that direct man, the encounter between the figure and posture, and the combining of beauty and discipline feature prominently. The human being is at the core of their art.

Regarding the choice of the figurative, the artists says:
JM: We have chosen the language with we express ourselves much better. We have noticed it's the language that communicates better with people. We think figurative language is much more understandable.
JC: We feel more at ease with this language, it flows more easily from within.

JM: Sometimes, is the model that triggers inspiration. We really enjoy working with the human body, and sometimes we hire a model to work in a certain way, but then he or she organically proposes something else that clicks in us, and you say "is beautiful", and we choose to work with that, and that's the piece. Sometimes inspiration doesn't come from the outside, we can find it here in the studio.
JC: The model is basic for our type of work, in which the beauty and emotions of beautiful things are basic to convey to the viewer what we want. And the process technically is that when we have some ideas we make some sketches in wax, and from there we choose within the sketches that we have made to be able to make the next phase that is to begin to think the size in which we want to develop that piece. That's very complicated, because seeing the size of the piece is always a difficult decision to make. Most of our final pieces are bronzes, but we have produced some in aluminium too.»

They received the Reina Sofía Painting and Sculpture Prize for their “Hamlet” artwork in 2017 and won First Prize at the 14th ARC International Salon Competition with the sculpture “The Swan Dance” in 2019. Their other awards include the Mariano Benlliure Sculpture Medal, the TIAC Art Prize or the Arcadia Contemporary Award.
In addition to being nationally and internationally renowned, their work forms part of private collections in several countries of Europe, Asia and America. They display their work in collective and individual exhibitions in both private entities and public spaces. Many venues in France, the United States (Miami), Mexico, Italy or Greece have had the opportunity of enjoying their works where they regularly exhibit. They were present in Berlin’s Urban Nation Biennial with their “Learning to Fly” piece in September 2019.
