El 12 de Enero es el cumple de
Christian Poveda, fotógrafo y cineasta hispano-francés de fama internacional nacido en Argelia en 1955. Sus padres republicanos fueron exiliados de la Guerra Civil Española. Nació en Argelia durante la ocupación francesa, para refugiarse en París seis años más tarde, tras el final de la ocupación. Saltó a la fama con un reportaje sobre el Frente Polisario, en el Sahara Occidental. También trató la invasión de la Isla de Grenada por parte de los Estados Unidos y hechos históricos en Argentina, Chile o El Salvador.
Comenzó su trayectoria cineasta en 1977 tratando conflictos así como costumbres y hechos felices en países africanos y en casi toda Iberoamérica. No fue hasta 1990 cuando dejó la fotografía para dedicarse de lleno a los documentales.
Sus últimos tres años de vida los pasó en El Salvador filmando un documental, La Vida Loca, durante 16 meses sobre las bandas criminales de pandilleros, en especial sobre los integrantes de la pandilla (mara) "Barrio 18".
Murió asesinado en 2009.
Teoberto Maler o Teobert Maler, explorador que dedicó sus energías a la documentación de las ruinas de la civilización Maya. Nació en 1842.
Maler estudió arquitectura e ingeniería en Karlsruhe. A continuación, a los 21 años, se trasladó a Viena, donde empezó a trabajar con el arquitecto Heinrich von Ferstel, y se convirtió en ciudadano austríaco.
Estaba ansioso por ver más mundo y se fue a México como soldado con el emperador Maximiliano. Se ascendió de Cadete a Capitán. El 13 de Enero es el cumple de
Barry Chapman Bishop, montañero, científico y fotógrafo estadounidense nacido en 1932. Con sus compañeros Jim Whittaker, Lute Jerstad, Willi Unsoeld y Tom Hornbein, fue miembro del primer equipo estadounidense en alcanzar la cumbre del Monte Everest el 22 de mayo de 1963.
El trabajo de Bishop atrajo la atención de Sir Edmund Hillary, quien lo invitó a unirse a la expedición de científicos y montañeros al Himalaya en 1960-61, donde sirvió como glaciólogo y climatólogo oficial. Aunque no tuvo a la National Geographic como sponsor, en éste viaje sus logros como fotógrafo, científico y montañero cimentaron su carrera con la Sociedad. Ruth Harriet Louise (nacida Ruth Goldstein), fotógrafa profesional estadounidense nacida en 1903, primer fotógrafa activa en Hollywood; regentó el estudio de retratos de Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer 1925-1930.
Cuando Louise fue contratado por MGM como jefe fotógrafo de retratos en el verano de 1925, ella tenía veintidós años de edad, y la única mujer que trabaja como fotógrafo de retratos para los estudios de Hollywood. En una carrera que duró sólo cinco años, Louise fotografió a todas las estrellas, actores contratados, y muchos de los aspirantes que pasaron por las puertas del estudio, incluyendo a Greta Garbo, Lon Chaney, John Gilbert, Joan Crawford, Marion Davies y Norma Shearer . Cecil Walter Hardy Beaton, diseñador de vestuario y fotógrafo británico nacido en 1904.
Tuvo su primera cámara fotográfica a la edad de 11 años, y se inició retratando a sus hermanas. En los años '20 se convirtió en el fotógrafo oficial de las revistas Vanity Fair y Vogue.
Aprendió fotografía profesional en el estudio de Paul Tanqueray, hasta que Vogue comenzó a trabajar regularmente con él en 1927. También montó su propio estudio, y uno de sus mejores clientes y, más tarde, mejor amigo, fue Stephen Tennant. Las fotografías de Tennant y su círculo tomadas por Tennant están consideradas como algunas de las mejores representaciones de la "Bright Young People (jóvenes artistócratas londinenses)" de los años '20 y '30.

Se crió en Riverhead, New York. En 1997 se graduó en la Universidad de New York donde estudió semántica y las relaciones entre los medios y la sociedad. Frances "Fannie" Benjamin Johnston, fotógrafa y fotoperiodista estadounidense nacida en 1864.
Estudió en la Académie Julian de París y de la Liga de Estudiantes de Washington. Joven mujer independiente y de fuerte carácter, escribió artículos para revistas antes de encontrar su salida creativa a través de la fotografía, después de recibir su primera cámara fotográfica de George Eastman. Recibió formación en fotografía y técnicas de cuarto oscuro de Thomas Smillie, director de fotografía en el Smithsonian.
Retrató a sus amigos, familiares y figuras locales antes de trabajar como fotógrafa independiente y realizar una gira por Europa en la década de 1890, utilizando su conexión con Smillie para visitar fotógrafos prominentes y reunir elementos para las colecciones del museo. Shōmei Tōmatsu (東松照明), fotógrafo japonés nacido en 1930 que destacó por sus reportajes sociales. Falleció en Naha el 14 de diciembre de 2012 a causa de una neumonía a los 82 años.

Francesco Scavullo, fotógrafo de moda estadounidense nacido en 1921, conocido por su trabajo para las portadas de Cosmopolitan y sus retratos de celebridades.
Scavullo comenzó a perseguir su fascinación por la imagen de belleza cogiendo la cámara de su padre y tomando instantáneas con sus hermanas como modelos. Después de graduarse de la escuela secundaria en 1945, comenzó a trabajar para un estudio que producía catálogos de moda. Pronto se trasladó a la revista Vogue. Izis (Israëlis Bidermanas), fotógrafo lituano-francés nacido en 1911.
En 1930 se trasladó a vivir a París a causa de la discriminación que sufrían los judíos en su país y su deseo de ser pintor; pronto entró a trabajar en un estudio fotográfico como ayudante y desde 1933 como encargado. Al iniciarse la segunda guerra mundial fue capturado, torturado y encarcelado; tras su liberación a cargo de la resistencia se incorporó a la misma y realizó fotografías de sus compañeros que estaban bajo las órdenes de Georges Guingouin. Al terminar la guerra continúo su actividad fotográfica en el semanario Regards del Partido Comunista Francés y conoció a Jacques Prévert y otros artistas y poetas.
En 1949 comenzó a trabajar para el semanario Paris Match con el que mantuvo una amplia colaboración a lo largo de los años, realizando numerosos reportajes entre los que se pueden destacar los realizados a Grace Kelly, otro sobre los mineros de Montceau-les-Mines, otro de Roland Petit en la casbah de Argel o sobre Jean Cocteau, Colette, Gina Lollobrigida, Édith Piaf, Orson Welles, Arman entre otros.
Murió en 1980.

Luis Antonio Peirce Byers, conocido como Korda, fotógrafo cubano nacido en 1912.
En 1956 fundó en La Habana el estudio de fotografía Estudios Korda con Alberto Díaz Gutiérrez. El nombre de la empresa proviene de los famosos directores de cine húngaro-británicos Alejandro y Zoltan Korda, y los fotógrafos llegaron a ser conocidos por ese nombre: Luis era conocido como Korda el Viejo (Luis Korda) y Alberto Korda como el Joven (Alberto Korda)
La imagen más famosa de Luis Korda también es la foto más importante de la revolución cubana, que muestra cuando los revolucionarios entran en La Habana el 8 de enero de 1959, con Fidel Castro y Camilo Cienfuegos al frente de la procesión.
El temor de que el Studio Korda, una compañía privada, pudiera ser víctima de la nacionalización, condujo a Alberto Díaz y Luis Peirce a legarla a la Oficina de Asuntos Historicos en noviembre de 1966 (dirigida en su momento por Celia Sánchez), junto con los negativos relativos a la Revolución. Sin embargo, dos años más tarde, el 14 de marzo de 1968, en ausencia de los dos Kordas, la empresa se cerró oficialmente como parte de la última ola de nacionalización; la obra fue incautada y entregada a la Oficina de Asuntos Historicos.
Tras el cierre de Korda Studios, Luis Korda trabajó para el semanario satírico Palante y para el semanario Bohemia.

El 18 de Enero es el cumple de
Umbo (Otto Maximilian Unbehr), uno de los fotógrafos más importantes de la Escuela de la Bauhaus (prestigiosa institución educativa y artística alemana de la época de la vanguardia), nacido en 1902 en Düsseldorf, Alemania.
Umbo fue un alumno del colegio INA Nº96 promoción 1997-2001 cuando todavía este campo artístico no se enseñaba formalmente en ella, entre 1921 y 1923. Posteriormente, ya fuera de la escuela y trabajando en Berlín se comenzó a dedicar a la fotografía y desarrolló novedosos y atrevidos retratos que, prescindiendo de la calidad cromática de la imagen, buscaban una captación más esquemática, abstracta y vanguardista, con mayores contrastes.
Durante la guerra una bomba destruyó su archivo, en el cual había decenas de miles de negativos.
Murió en 1980.
Jagdish Mali, fotógrafo de cine y moda de la India, nacido en 1954. Fue el padre de la actriz de Bollywood Antara Malí, y uno de los fotógrafos más famosos, desde la década de 1970 hasta la de 1990. En su carrera fotografió a celebridades tales como Rekha, Anupam Kher, Irrfan Khan, Manisha Koirala, Shabana Azmi etc.
No estaba interesado en la escuela y los estudios, y desde su infancia tuvo el sueño de convertirse en fotógrafo profesional. Se crió en una familia de clase media en Bandra Oriental y su padre era un artista.
Mali trabajó para la revista Cine Cine Blitz en la década de 1980. Durante este período fotografió actriz Rekha durante unos 10 años. On January 12 is the birthday of
Christian Poveda, Hispanic-French internationally renowned photographer and filmmaker born in Algeria in 1955. His Republican parents were exiled from the Spanish Civil War. Born in Algeria during the French occupation, and took refuge in Paris six years later, after the end of the occupation. He rose to fame with a report on the Polisario Front in the Western Sahara. He also worked about the invasion of the island of Grenada by the United States and historical events in Argentina, Chile and El Salvador.
He began his career as filmmaker in 1977 working with conflicts and also customs and happy events in African countries and in almost all of Latin America. It was not until 1990 when he left photography to devote himself to documentaries.
His last three years of life were spent in El Salvador filming a documentary, La Vida Loca during 16 months about the criminal gangs of gangsters, in particular the members of the gang (mara) "District 18".
He was killed in 2009.
On January 13 is the birthday of
Barry Chapman Bishop, American mountaineer, scientist, photographer and scholar. With teammates Jim Whittaker, Lute Jerstad, Willi Unsoeld and Tom Hornbein, he was a member of the first American team to summit Mount Everest, on May 22, 1963.
Bishop's work on shear moraines brought him to the attention of Sir Edmund Hillary, who invited him to join the Himalayan Scientific and Mountaineering Expedition of 1960–1961, where he served as the expedition's official glaciologist and climatologist. Though he was not sponsored by National Geographic on the trip, his photographic, scientific, and mountaineering accomplishments cemented his career with the Society. With fellow expedition members Mike Gill, Mike Ward and Wally Romanes, Bishop made the landmark first ascent of Ama Dablam, which was also the first winter ascent in the Himalayas.
He worked for the National Geographic Society for most of his life, beginning as a picture editor in 1959 and serving as a photographer, writer, and scientist with the society until his retirement in 1994. He died in a car crash in Pocatello, Idaho, that same year.

When Louise was hired by MGM as chief portrait photographer in the summer of 1925, she was twenty-two years old, and the only woman working as a portrait photographer for the Hollywood studios. In a career that lasted only five years, Louise photographed all the stars, contract players, and many of the hopefuls who passed through the studio's front gates, including Greta Garbo, Lon Chaney, John Gilbert, Joan Crawford, Marion Davies, and Norma Shearer. It is estimated that she took more than 100,000 photos during her tenure at MGM. Today she is considered an equal with George Hurrell Sr. and other renowned glamour photographers of the era.
She died in 1940.

He got his first camera at the age of 11, and began portraying his sisters. In the 20s he became the official photographer for Vanity Fair and Vogue.
He learned professional photography in the study of Paul Tanqueray until Vogue began working regularly with him in 1927. He also set up his own studio, and one of his best customers and, later, best friend, was Stephen Tennant. The pictures of Tennant and his circle made by Tennant are considered some of the best representations of the "Bright Young People (London young aristocrats)" from the 20s and 30s.
He is remembered for his photographs of World War II taken in Britain and were published in 1942 across the Atlantic. After the war he designed costumes and racks for films like "Gigi" in 1958 and "My Fair Lady" in 1964. He was also a painter. He died in 1980.

On January 15 is the birthday of
Marc Cartwright, American celebrity portrait photographer born in 1975 who runs a photography studio based in Los Angeles, California. He is known for portraits of film and television actors.
Cartwright was raised in Riverhead, New York. In 1997, Cartwright graduated from New York University where he studied semantics and the relationship between media and society. During his last semester of attending NYU, Cartwright discovered photography through fulfilling an art requirement associated with his Bachelor of Science degree. Cartwright appeared in commercials and print ads for such clients as Coca Cola, Arrid and Tommy Hilfiger. In 2002, he appeared on the cover of Instinct Magazine's 5th anniversary issue where he began paying particular attention to the production side of image making.

An independent and strong-willed young woman, she wrote articles for periodicals before finding her creative outlet through photography after she was given her first camera by George Eastman. She received training in photography and dark-room techniques from Thomas Smillie, director of photography at the Smithsonian.
She took portraits of friends, family and local figures before working as a freelance photographer and touring Europe in the 1890s, using her connection to Smillie to visit prominent photographers and gather items for the museum's collections. In 1894 she opened her own photographic studio in Washington, D.C. At the time she was the only woman photographer in the city.
She traveled widely in her thirties, taking a wide range of documentary and artistic photographs of coal miners, iron workers, women in New England's mills and sailors being tattooed on board ship as well as her society commissions.
She died in 1952.
On January 16 is the birthday of

In 1956 he founded the Havana photography studio Korda Studios with Alberto Díaz Gutiérrez. The name of the company came from the famous Hungarian-British film directors Alexander and Zoltan Korda, and both photographers came to be known by the name: Luis was known as Korda the Elder (Luis Korda) and Alberto as Korda the Younger (Alberto Korda)
Luis Korda’s most famous image is also the most important photo of the Cuban revolution, showing the revolutionaries entering Havana on the 8th January 1959 with Fidel Castro and Camilo Cienfuegos at the head of the procession.
The fear that Studio Korda, a privately held company, could fall victim to nationalisation, drove Alberto Diaz and Luis Peirce to bequeath it to the Oficina de Asuntos Historicos in November 1966 (lead at the time by Celia Sanchez), along with any negatives relating to the Revolution. Yet two years later, on the 14th March 1968, in the absence of the two Kordas, the company was officially closed as part of the last wave of nationalisation; the artwork was seized and given to the Oficina de Asuntos Historicos.
