Anton alcanzó sus primeros logros artísticos en 1977; recibió una mención especial en el concurso de New Signatures de la Asociación de Arte Sudafricana en Pretoria. Dos años más tarde recibió un gran impulso cuando ganó el primer premio en el concurso de New Signatures.
Fue el "Artista del mes" en 1982 en el Museo de Arte de Pretoria, a lo que siguió en 1987 su primera exposición individual en la Galería Beuster Skolimowski de Pretoria y en 1989 otra exposición individual en la SAAA. Desde entonces ha realizado numerosas exposiciones de sus esculturas en toda Sudáfrica. Su obra ha sido expuesta también en Roma y Milán, Italia.
En 2003 Smit abrió su propio jardín de esculturas, el espectacular Parque de Esculturas Anton Smit en Aqua Vista, con una vista impresionante de la presa de Bronkhorstspruit.

«Dibujo a menudo. Me despierto en medio de la noche soñando con una escultura, luego rápidamente hago un pequeño dibujo en el cuaderno de bocetos de cabecera, y ese dibujo puede mantenerse durante semanas, meses, años. Guardo todos estos dibujos y me remito a ellos todo el tiempo. Puedo entonces empezar a hacer esculturas a partir de eso, y luego una escultura lleva a otra, e inspira otra.»

"Colossal Youth" es un álbum del grupo musical "Young Marble Giants" publicado en 1980 que ha inspirado la obra homónima (Juventud colosal) de Anton Smit.
«Yo solía escuchar la radio alternativa, e inmediatamente cuando escuché ese nombre vi a un tipo parado así, directamente de la nada. Estaba acabado en mi mente incluso antes de tocar la arcilla. La idea que sustenta eso es la de un hombre fuerte de pie, ennoblecido ante Dios. Esa es la idea de ese hombre. Está de pie, mirando hacia arriba, con fuerza, pero no es fuerte. Esta es la idea que estoy tratando de ofrecer con todo esto.»

Colossal Youth is the name of an album by the Young Marble Giants band released in 1980 which inspired the work of the same name by Anton Smit.
«I used to listen to alternative radio, and immediately when I heard that name I saw this guy standing like that, straight out of nowhere. It was finished in my mind even before I touched the piece of clay. The idea behind that is the strong man stands in sublimation to God. That's the idea of that man. He stands looking up strong, but he's not strong. This is the idea I'm trying to give through the whole thing."

"Ángel / Angel", polímero reforzado con vidrio, bronce / GRP, bronze, 87 x 23 x 11 cm.
Anton achieved his first artistic breakthroughs in 1977, he received special mention in the South African Art Association’s New Signatures competition in Pretoria. Two years later he had a great boost when he won first prize in the New Signatures competition.
He was the “Artist of the month” in 1982 at the Pretoria Art Museum this was followed in 1987 with his first one man exhibition in the Beuster Skolimowski Gallery in Pretoria and in 1989 another one man exhibition at the SAAA. Since then he has held numerous exhibitions of his sculptures throughout South Africa. His work has been exhibited also in Rome and Milan, Italy.
In 2003 Smit opened his own sculpture garden, the spectacular Anton Smit Sculpture Park in Aqua Vista, with a breathtaking view of Bronkhorstspruit Dam.

«Frequently I'm drawing. I wake up in the middle of the night, I was dreaming about a sculpture, then I quickly made little drawing in the bedside sketchbook, and ofthen that drawing can steady for weeks, months, years. I keep all these drawings, and I refer back to them all the time. Can then I start making sculptures from that, and then one sculpture leads to the other, and inspires another one.»
