To start the year as it deserves, I present a mini-series of three posts in which we will enjoy, through a wide selection of images, videos and texts, the work of the outstanding South African sculptor Anton Smit. The other posts here and here.

Anton Smit es un escultor sudafricano nacido en Boksburg en 1954. Allí se crió hasta los 3 años, hasta los 4 en Grahamstown, y entre los 4 y los 8 en Port Shepstone. La mayoría de su etapa formativa la pasó en KwaZulu-Natal.
Entre los 9 y los 10 (1970-71) en Oos Moot, se volvió un rebelde, cuestionando el sistema y las reglas de las figuras autoritarias. Un punto de inflexión que involucró sus aspiraciones artísticas llegó en 1971, cuando participó en el concurso National Bible, y ganó su primer evento de escultura.
Hoy en día es ampliamente reconocido por sus espectaculares cabezas y esculturas monumentales, que tratan temas de una sufrida reconciliación, gloria y exaltación. Su obra está presente en colecciones públicas y privadas, en su país y a nivel internacional.

Hijo de un oficial de policía y una maestra de escuela, Smit creció enfrentando desafíos para afianzarse en la escuela debido a que la familia a menudo necesitaba mudarse de una ciudad a otra, siguiendo los requisitos de la ocupación de su padre.
De su madre aimiló un sentido de ternura, empatía y respeto, mostrando amabilidad hacia todas las formas de vida, los animales, alimentando un gran amor por la naturaleza. "Llevaba a todos los animales callejeros a su casa, dándoles comida y refugio. Era una maestra de escuela con muchas tareas y me di cuenta de que estaba sobrecargada y la ayudaba a aliviar su carga clasificando los libros y las clases. Ella seleccionaba la mejor tarea de los alumnos, lo calificaba y luego me lo entregaba como referencia, a partir de la cual yo calificaba el resto de las tareas. De esta manera ella podía atender las obligaciones diarias. Teníamos una letra similar y nadie se dio cuenta de que algo andaba mal... esto duró muchos años. La disciplina me enseñó el orden; aún hoy en día no puedo trabajar sumido en el caos".
Anton es el padre de Lionel Smit, también destacado escultor y artista de lienzo sudafricano con quien a menudo comparte iniciativas artísticas.

A Antón le gusta impregnar su obra con una ilusión de movimiento o gestualidad, cuerpos acurrucados o miembros que se extienden hacia el espectador, "figuras de acción" inspiradoras que proyectan una tremenda emoción, una llamada al movimiento. Trabaja con metales y piedras, creando también una mezcla única de hierro y polímero fundido, que combina el metal con otros medios.

Anton Smit is a South African sculptor born in 1954, in Boksburg. He was raised in Boksburg till the age of three, in Grahamstown till four, and in Port Shepstone from the ages of four to eight. Most of his formative years were spent in KwaZulu-Natal.
In standard 9 and 10 (1970- 1971) in Oos Moot he was becoming a rebel, questioning the system and the rule of Authoritarian figures. A key turning point involving a artistic aspiration came in 1971, when he participated in the National Bible competition and won his first sculpture competition.
Today he is widely revered for his overwhelming heads and monumental sculptures, evoking themes of suffering reconciliation, glory and sublimation. His works grace public and private collections countrywide and internationally.

The son of a police officer and a school teacher, Smit grew up facing challenges settling in at school due to the family often needing to relocate home to a new town, following his father’s occupation requirements. At the age of 17 he began to take an interest in sculpture while finishing high school in Pretoria.
From his mother he took a sense of tenderness, empathy and respect, showing kindness to all life forms, animals, nurturing a great love of nature. "She took all the stray animals to her house, giving them food and shelter. She was a school teacher burdened with much homework and I realised that she was overloaded and helped to relieve her burden by sorting out the books and classes. She would select the best pupil’s paper, mark it and then hand it to me as a reference, from which I would mark the rest of the pupil’s work. By me doing this, she was able to attend to the daily chores. We had a similar handwriting and nobody realised that anything was amiss… this went on for many years. The discipline taught me order – till today I can’twork in chaos."
Anton is the father of Lionel Smit, also a noted South African sculptor and canvas artist with whom he often shares art initiatives.

Anton likes to imbue his work with an illusion of movement or gesture, bodies curling up or limbs reaching out to the onlooker, inspirational “action figures” projecting tremendous emotion, a call to movement. He works with metals and stones, also creating a unique iron and polymer cast mixture,which combines metal with several other mediums.
