On August 22 is the birthday of

Erwin E. Smith. He was born in 1886 and always wanted to be both a cowboy and an artist. As a teenager, he worked on various ranches throughout the Southwest, using his camera to document the cowboy way of life that was fading away before his eyes. From 1905 to 1912, he divided his time between home in Bonham, Texas, art school in Chicago and Boston, and ranches in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, where he made some of the most important photographs of cowboy life on record.
But Smith didn't just photograph cowboy life - he lived it. He knew firsthand the varied jobs of all the players involved in managing cattle, from the range boss to the wrangler, the bronco buster to the line rider, the cook to the cutting horse. He wanted his photographs to capture both the rugged realities and the romance of life on the open range.
He died in 1947.

Today, August 23, is the birthday of

John Swope, American photographer for Life Magazine and a pilot born in 1908 in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
He attended Harvard University in 1930. There, he joined the theatrical group University Players where Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart, and Joshua Logan were also members.
His interest in photography began when he brought a camera to a yacht race from Los Angeles to Hawaii in 1936.
Together with Leland Hayward and John H. Connelly, he co-founded Southwest Airways (no connection to the present day Southwest Airlines), a company that developed the Thunderbird Fields, which trained thousands of military pilots during the Second World War.
He was married to actress Dorothy McGuire in 1943 until his death in 1979.
