El 23 de Noviembre es el cumple de

Peter Lindbergh, (nac.

* Murió el 3/9/2019

On November 23 is the birthday of

Peter Lindbergh, (née Peter Brodbeck), German photographer and director born in 1944
As a teenager, he worked as window dresser for the Karstadt and Horten department stores in Duisburg. Coming from a part of Germany close to the Dutch border, North Rhine-Westphalia, he spent summer holidays with his family in the Netherlands on the coast near Noordwijk. The vast beaches and the industrial settings of his hometown Duisburg, have influenced his work strongly over the years. In the early 1960’s, he moved to Lucerne and months later to Berlin where he enrolled the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts.
Considered a pioneer in photography, he introduced a form of new realism by redefining the standards of beauty with his timeless images, influenced by documentary photographers, street photographers and photojournalists like Dorothea Lange, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Garry Winogrand. His humanist approach and singular vision of women sets him apart from the other photographers as he privileges their souls and the personality. He changed drastically the standards of the fashion photography in times of excessive retouching considering that there is something else that makes a person interesting, beyond their age. In a 2014 interview he mentions that : «This should be the responsibility of photographers today to free women, and finally everyone, from the terror of youth and perfection.»

* He died on September 3, 2019

On November 24 is the birthday of

Inge Schönthal Feltrinelli, German-born (1930) Italian photographer and director with her son Carlo (b. 1962) of the Italian publishing house Giangiacomo.
She began her career as photographer in Hamburg. In 1952 during a long stay in New York City she was able to photograph Greta Garbo, Elia Kazan, John Fitzgerald Kennedy and Winston Churchill. She also made friends with Erwin Blumenfeld. Among her most celebrated photos are those of writers Ernest Hemingway, Edoardo Sanguineti, Allen Ginsberg, Günter Grass, Nadine Gordimer and artists Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall.
In 1958 she met Italian left-wing publisher Giangiacomo Feltrinelli whom she later married in Mexico and followed to Milan. She took charge of international relations for the publishing house. She eventually became the de facto head of the publishing house as Feltrinelli a few years later embraced the “struggle for the revolution against imperialism”.
In 1972, when Feltrinelli died, during an attempted terrorist attack on the Milan electricity network, she became president of the company, which she led together with her son Carlo.

* Inge Feltrinelli died on September 20th, 2018

On November 25 is the birthday of

Sonya Noskowiak, American photographer and member of the famous San Francisco photography collective Group f/64 that included Ansel Adams and Edward Weston.
She was born in Leipzig, Germany. Her father was a landscape gardener who instilled in her an awareness of the land that would later become evident in her photography. In her early years she moved around the world while her father sought work in Chile, then Panama and finally in California.
It was while working at Johan Hagemeyer's studio in the 1920s that Noskowiak realized her true calling was in photography. But it was not until 1929, when she met Edward Weston, that she began to fully develop her talents. She soon became Weston’s darkroom assistant, and he taught her both the craft and the artistry of the camera. Soon she was turning her lens on architectural subjects and capturing the strong profiles of bridges, lighthouses and water towers. Following Weston’s lead she then began to look at patterns in nature, which she photographed with a distinct style that “suggests the coherence of the natural world.” Dora Hagemeyer (sister-in-law of Johan) wrote that while Noskowiak's photographic style was clean and direct like Weston's, she "put into her work something which is essentially her own: a subtle and delicate loveliness."
She died in 1975.

On November 26 is the birthday of

Charles Breijer, Dutch photographer born in 1914, known as a "resistance photographer," notable especially for the photographs he took during the last year of the German occupation of The Netherlands during World War II.
Between 1947 and 1953 he worked as a cameraman in Indonesia. There he witnessed the decolonization and the birth of a new republic. Charles Breijer was attracted by the adventure but also his idealism led him to participate in the construction of the independent Indonesian state. He first worked for government film company Multifilm-Batavia and later as an independent director to the new Indonesian government.
At the same time Breijer continued taking pictures for himself. These are especially valuable because they show openly the tense atmosphere in the last years of the colony.
After the treaty of sovereignty in 1949, Breijer was devoted to photograph daily life, architecture, landscapes and portraits.
In 1953 he returned to Holland especially dedicated to cinema and leaving aside virtually photography.
He died in 2011.

On November 27 is the birthday of

George Bradford Brainerd, American civil engineer, an amateur photographer, and an amateur natural historian born in 1845 in Haddam Neck, Connecticut.
He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, from which he graduated in 1865. He, along with seven other men, founded the Theta Xi fraternity. As a civil engineer, Brainerd worked for the then-City of Brooklyn in the position of Deputy Water Purveyor—a position he held for 17 years (1869 to 1886).
Brainerd's work as an amateur photographer began when he was just 13 years old. He began by making his own cameras and developing ambrotypes from them. While working as a civil engineer, Brainerd photographed public work projects, as well as street scenes in Brooklyn. He also took extensive photographs of areas in New York State, including on Long Island and along the Hudson River. His subjects included houses, churches, mills, railroad stations, gate houses, reservoirs, harbors, beaches, and ponds, among others. Over the years, Brainerd continued to design his own cameras and photographic techniques. Through his inventions, he was able photograph the human vocal organs thus contributing to the perfection of this type of medical photography.
He died in 1887.

On November 28 is the birthday of

Manny Crisostomo, multimedia photojournalist born 1958 in Sinajana, Guam.
He attended the University of Guam and the University of Missouri. He entered newspaper work as staff member of the Columbia Missourian, joined the3 Jackson Citizen Patrior and the Detroit Free Press where he was promoted to be staff photographer. In 1986 Crisostomo was co-author of the book entitled Main Street: A Portrait of Small-Town Michigan, and the following year the photographer edited Moving Pictures: A Look at Detroit from High Atop the People Move. He was named Michigan Photographer of the Year by the Michigan Press Photographers's Association twice, en 1987 and 1988. In 1989 Manny Crisostomo gained the Pulitzer Prize in the Feature Photography category for his series of pictures from the year before depicting student life at a Detroit high school.

Today, November 29, is the birthday of

Maurizio Berlincioni, Italian photographer born in Florence in 1943.
He studied economics and political science at the University of Florence. After working in the world of photography as a freelance, in 1977 he opened his studio in his hometown. His interests as a photographer have been varied: has made numerous trips to Europe and America to take pictures, has collaborated with theater and film directors (as Bigas Luna and Ettore Scola), he has participated in important art exhibitions (as in XLVI Biennale Venice, 1995) and has made numerous reports about Florence (in Wenzhou-Firenze, for example, focuses on the Chinese community in the city).
Aside from his professional work as a photographer, he has also taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, Florence and Bologna.

On November 30 is the birthday of

Andreas Groll, Austrian pioneer of photography born in Vienna in 1812.
He might have come into close contact with photography as a consequence of his employment and as a lab assistant at the polytechnic institute (today the technical University) in Vienna, from 1845 to 1853. At that time, the Polytechnic Institute was the most important place of early photography in Austria because of the employment of different professors (Johann Joseph of Prechtl, Anton of Schroetter, who promoted Groll personally) and particullary the activity of Anton George Martin. Groll busied himself at that time with the daguerrotype and salt paper and albumen, moving from paper to glass negatives. In addition, predominantly concerned with portraits and architectura photographs, he developed particulary interesting pictorial document of monuments.
He died in 1872.

On November 22 is the birthday of

Cecilio Plá y Gallardo, Spanish painter and illustrator born in 1860.
As a child, he studied music at the Escuela de Artesanos de Valencia, in accordance with the wishes of his father, who was the bandleader and arranger for the Teatro Principal. Later, he followed his own desires to be an artist and continued his studies at the Instituto San Pablo and the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos. After winning a Silver Medal at the Exposición de Valencia in 1879, he moved to Madrid with a friend, where he entered the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, becoming a student of Emilio Sala.
The following year, after travelling through Portugal, France and Italy, he settled in Rome. From there, he sent home numerous works, mostly in the Costumbrismo genre, which showed the influence of Marià Fortuny. Some were shown at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, winning medals in 1884 and 1887 for paintings on Italian subjects. He received many more medals over the next two decades, including a Medal of Honor at the Exposition Universelle (1900). From 1893 to 1910, he drew illustrations for several periodicals, including La Ilustración Española y Americana, and Blanco y Negro.
In addition to his paintings and drawings, he worked on many public projects, completing the work begun by Sala at the Casino de Madrid and providing decorations for the Círculo de Bellas Artes.
He died in 1934.

On November 23 is the birthday of

Jerry Harris, American abstract sculptor, collagist and writer born in 1945.
Harris is primarily a constructivist sculptor, working in media such as wood, stone, bronze, fiberglass, clay, metal, mixed media (found objects), and collage.
After graduating from high school in Pittsburgh, he spent a year in Portland, Oregon with his uncle, professional wrestler and referee Shag Thomas. Harris attended community college in Portland and then transferred to Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, and San Francisco State University.
Harris lived in Stockholm and Lund, Sweden, for many years until the death of his wife in 1996. He befriended many African-American visual artists while living in Sweden, such as Herbert Gentry and Harvey Cropper. In 1998 Harris returned to the United States and his home town of Pittsburgh. He was elected into The Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, the nation's second oldest artists' association, where he felt welcomed by the African-American sculptor Thaddeus Mosley. Harris later moved to Eugene, Oregon, and currently lives in Chico, California.
He has exhibited throughout Sweden, elsewhere in Europe, and in the United States in various galleries and museums.

On November 24 is the birthday of

Ángel Lizcano Monedero y Esteban, Spanish painter and illustrator born in 1846. He specialized in costumbrist and historical scenes.
When he was seven, his family moved to Madrid to open a bookstore. At the age of fourteen, he began his art studies at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, where he graduated with honors. He continued his education by copying the Old Masters at the Museo del Prado.
In 1869, he received a stipend from Manuel Antonio, Marqués de Bedmar, to complete his studies in Italy. Later, he toured much of Spain and participated in the National Exposition of Fine Arts, where he sold a painting to King Amedeo I. All together, he received four medals at various expositions from 1876 to 1887. For many years, he continued to work as an itinerant artist.
He also gained a reputation as an illustrator and engraver, providing images for a wide variety of magazines, books and posters; over 800 in all. La Ilustración Española y Americana was one of his most favored periodicals. Among his best known book illustrations were those for the Episodios Nacionales by Benito Pérez Galdós, and theatrical pieces by Vital Aza, Tomás Luceño, Miguel Ramos Carrión and Ricardo de la Vega. He also illustrated classics, including the sainetes of Ramón de la Cruz. Some of his works were adapted for postcards by the French photographer, Jean Laurent.
At the age of fifty, due to the death of his wife, he began to suffer from mental disorders, although he continued to paint and was named a Professor of drawing at the Círculo de Bellas Artes. Later, the quality of his work began to suffer as he created rapidly produced bullfight scenes and other popular images to maintain his income.
He died in 1929.

On November 25 is the birthday of

Maurice Denis, French painter and writer born in 1870, and a member of the Symbolist and Les Nabis movements. His theories contributed to the foundations of cubism, fauvism, and abstract art.
The Denis family was affluent, and young Maurice attended both the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian, where he studied with the French figure painter and theorist Jules Joseph Lefebvre.
At the Académie, he met painters and future Nabi members including Paul Sérusier, Pierre Bonnard; through Bonnard he also met the future Nabis Édouard Vuillard, Ker-Xavier Roussel and Hermann-Paul. In 1890, they formed The Nabis.
After Les Nabis, Denis went on to focus on religious subjects and murals.
The subjects of his mature works include landscapes and figure studies, particularly of mother and child. But his primary interest remained the painting of religious subjects, like "The dignity of labour", commissioned in 1931 by the International Federation of Christian Trade Unions to decorate the main staircase of the Centre William Rappard.
He died in 1943.

On November 26 is the birthday of

Peter Martensen, Danish artist born in 1953 in Odense.
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Odense (1971-1977) and The Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen (1982-1984)
Nowadays he lives and works in Hellerup, Copenhagen.

On November 27 is the birthday of

(John) Thomas Baines, English artist and explorer of British colonial southern Africa and Australia, born in 1820.
Baines was apprenticed to a coach painter at an early age. When he was 22 he left England for South Africa aboard the "Olivia", and worked for a while in Cape Town as a scenic and portrait artist, and as official war artist during the so-called Eighth Frontier War for the British Army.
In 1855 Baines joined Augustus Gregory's 1855–1857 Royal Geographical Society sponsored expedition across northern Australia as official artist and storekeeper. The expedition's purpose was to explore the Victoria River district in the north-west and to evaluate the entire northern area of Australia in terms of its suitability for colonial settlement. His association with the North Australian Expedition was the highpoint of his career, and he was warmly commended for his contribution to it, to the extent that Mount Baines and the Baines River were named in his honour.
In 1858 Baines accompanied David Livingstone along the Zambezi, and was one of the first white men to view Victoria Falls. In 1869 Baines led one of the first gold prospecting expeditions to Mashonaland in what later became Rhodesia.
From 1861 to 1862 Baines and James Chapman undertook an expedition to South West Africa. Chapman's Travels in the Interior of South Africa (1868) and Baines' Explorations in South-West Africa (1864), provide a rare account of different perspectives on the same trip. This was the first expedition during which extensive use was made of both photography and painting, and in addition both men kept journals in which, amongst other things, they commented on their own and each other's practice.
He died in 1875.

Today, November 28, is the birthday of

Zbigniew Kupczynski, Polish-Canadian abstract expressionist artist born in 1928, known for his colorful portrait paintings of celebrities and children.
His work has been the subject of hundreds of exhibitions throughout Europe, North America, Australia and Japan since the 1950s.
Kupczynski moved to Wroclaw to receive formal training at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1946. In 1952, Kupczynski became a member of The Association of Polish Artists, but the country's socialist realism policy barred his work from exhibition due to his tendencies towards expressionism and semi-abstract art.
A change in Poland's government in the mid 1950s precipitated new trends in abstract expressionism and rising interest in Kupczynski's work. In 1956, French artist Andre Pignon visited Kupczynski in Warsaw and was appalled by the living and working conditions. Pignon's intervention resulted in the Ministry of Arts and Culture in Poland allocating a studio to Kupczynski.
By the late 1950s, Kupczynski had attracted the attention of both Polish and Western critics, and he was featured in various publications.
Today, Kupczynski's works are held in private and corporate collections worldwide.

On November 29 is the birthday of

James Rosenquist, American artist born in 1933, one of the protagonists in the pop-art movement.
From 1957 to 1960, he earned his living as a billboard painter. This was perfect training, as it turned out, for an artist about to explode onto the pop art scene. Rosenquist deftly applied sign-painting techniques to the large-scale paintings he began creating in 1960. Like other pop artists, Rosenquist adapted the visual language of advertising and pop culture (often funny, vulgar, and outrageous) to the context of fine art. Rosenquist achieved international acclaim in 1965 with the room-scale painting F-111.
His specialty is taking fragmented, oddly images and combining, overlapping, and putting them on canvases to create visual stories. This can leave some viewers breathless yet others confused, making them consider even the most familiar objects (a U-Haul trailer, or a box of Oxydol detergent, etc.) in more abstract and provocative ways.

* James Rosenquist died on March 31th, 2017

On November 30 is the birthday of

Juan Garcia Comba, Spanish photographer, painter, cartoonist and illustrator born in 1852.
He trained at the "Naval School of San Carlos de la Isla de León", then NCO School of the Navy. Later he entered the School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving, under the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, as a disciple of Eduardo Rosales. He brought him into contact with Abelardo Carlos, director of the Spanish and American Illustration, where Comba published his illustrations from March 1872 until 1907. During this period he also collaborated in the magazine Black and White.
He accompanied the King Alfonso XII to all trips made by Spain and Central Europe, so the Royal House honored him with honors and official positions. His 683 graphical information, of which only 15 are photographs, and his paintings, are testimony to the transformations that occurred in Spain in that period, earning the epithet "Graphic Chronicler of the Restoration."
He died in 1924.
