Aniversarios / Anniversaries (CCXXXIV) [Junio / June 25-30]

Todos los aniversarios de Junio aquí / All anniversaries for June here.
_________________________________________________________

On June 25 is the birthday of

Jacques Monory, French painter and filmmaker born in Paris in 1924, whose work, highly influenced by photography and cinema, is an allegory of the contemporary world with a focus on the violence of everyday reality. His canvases evoke a heavy atmosphere, pulling subject matter from modern civilization through the lens of his signature monochrome color, almost always blue.
Monory was first exhibited at the Drouant-David Gallery in Paris in 1952. During the 1960s, he became one of the leading figures of the European movement of Pop Art, called Narrative Figuration by the art critic Gérald Gassiot-Talabot. Monory would say: “What has developed in France has moved away from American Pop Art, we have expressed a critical narrative of society while the Americans have almost always, in my opinion, embraced their system. This is a fundamental difference.”
In 1968, he directed the influential film Ex- and painted the series Les Meurtres (Murders), putting in place the elements that would characterize his work: the division into sequences, the distancing by the use of the blue color, the dream, the illusion, but also a critical look at society.

Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 170 x 340 cm., 1986

In 1971, Pierre Gaudibert curated a solo exhibition, Monory Catalogue 1968- 1971, at the Modern Art Museum of Paris which heightened his visibility, making him instantly recognizable. Two trips to the United States in 1969 and 1973 were vitally important to his personal and artistic history; it constitutes, from photos, a repertory of forms, images, and notebooks of models. In 1974, he joined the legendary gallery of Aimé Maeght, where he would exhibit, including his Operas Glacés (Frozen Operas).
In 1986, he exhibited at the 42nd Venice Biennale, and in 1992, he was the featured artist of the French Pavilion at the World Expo in Seville. In 2005, his work inaugurated the MACVAL in France with Detour, a large spiral installation of his paintings. In 2008, Jacques Monory was highlighted in the retrospective exhibition Figuration Narrative, at the Grand Palais in Paris. In 2015, a solo retrospective, Jacques Monory, took place at the Helene & Edouard Leclerc Fund for Culture in Landerneau, France.
His work is included in the permanent collections of Pompidou Center, Paris, France; The Museum of Modern Art, Paris, France; Museum of Modern Art and Contemporary Art, Geneva, Switzerland; Museum of Modern Art, Fukoka, Japan, and many more.

On June 26 is the birthday of

Jean Bertholle, French painter and engraver of the New School of Paris, born in 1909 in Dijon.
He began painting as early as 1924. In 1928, he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Saint-Étienne. His father showed him in Paris in 1932 a large exhibition of Manet at the Orangery. From 1930 to 1932 Bertholle attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon where he became associated with the sculptor Étienne Martin.
Bertholle continued his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1933 and 1934, in the studio of Paul Albert Laurens. In 1934, he met Roger Bissière who noticed one of his paintings (Les Fous, 1934) at Étienne Martin and participated in a first collective exhibition at the Académie Ranson. Frequenting the Academy without being a student, he joined with Jean Le Moal and met Alfred Manessier. He was then a founding member of the group "Témoignage", animated in Lyon by Marcel Michaud, bringing together painters (including Lucien Beyer, Le Moal, Vera Pagava, Dimitri Varbanesco, Nicolas Wacker and Zelman, Manessier joining them in 1938), sculptors (Étienne Martin and François Stahly), writers and musicians, which first appeared at the Salon d'Automne in Lyon in 1936. The group was supported by gallery owner René Breteau who exhibited it in 1938 in his shop, 9 rue des Cans, then in 1939 in his gallery rue Bonaparte, very busy places in the years immediately preceding the Second World War.

In 1941 he participated in the exhibition "Twenty young painters of French tradition", the first event, organized by Jean Bazaine of avant-garde painting under the Occupation.
In 1943 he became the artistic director of the pottery factory of Gien (2000 workers), where he took on the role of decorator. He suffered from being unable until 1945 to devote himself to painting as much as he wished. Bertholle was selected in 1949 and in 1960 for the Venice Biennale, as well as for the Biennial of São Paulo.
The first retrospective exhibition of the work of Bertholle were presented in 1964 at the Museum of Fine Arts of Metz, the State Museum of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the House of Culture of Caen. From 1965 to 1980, Bertholle, appointed by André Malraux, taught as a professor of mural art at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After an exhibition at the Galerie Villand and Galanis in 1966, prefaced by Jean Lescure, new retrospectives were held in 1972 at the Museum of Fine Arts in Dijon, then in Besançon and Saint-Germain-en-Laye. After another retrospective in 1982 at the School of Fine Arts in Paris (Bertolle, Chastel, Singier), he was elected in 1983 member of the Institut de France. Passionate about teaching, he founded his own academy of painting (Saint Roch) in the same year. His works were presented in Paris in 1989 at the Galerie Callu Mérite in 1991 and 1992 at the Art-Mel Gallery.
He died in 1996.

"Arceuil", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 60 x 120 cm., 1958. Blouin Art

On June 27 is the birthday of

Rudolf Zender (Zehnder), Swiss painter, graphic artist and draftsman born in Rüti in 1901. He is considered an important representative of Swiss painting and is the most important Winterthur painter of the 20th century.
He spent his childhood, together with his three sisters, in Fägswil-Rüti. There his father worked as a teacher. In 1908 the family moved to Winterthur, where Rudolf went to school.
His classmate Lisa Hahnloser and her parents' painting collection brought him into contact with art. The art collectors Arthur and Hedy Hahnloser-Bühler were his later sponsors.

"Parisien Seinepartie", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 54 x 65 cm. Blouin Art

After the early death of his mother, he trained as a primary school teacher in 1922, after which he received thanks to his good grades a vicarage as a secondary school teacher. With the money saved, he traveled to Frankfurt am Main to practice nude and landscape drawing at the Städel Museum. This was followed by a first trip to Paris. The light and the atmosphere of this city cast a spell over him. His decision to the painter career was now clear.
With a training scholarship from the city of Winterthur, Zender traveled again to Paris and received, along with Wilhelm Gimmi, training with Roger Bissière, a student of Georges Braque, at the Académie Ranson. After only half a year, Bissière dismissed him saying that he could teach him nothing more.
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner introduced him to printmaking. This artistic encounter was the second important one in Zender's life after that with Bissière. But according to Zender "violent range" of Kirchner was incompatible with his experience of light and color.

Since 1927 he worked again in Paris. A scholarship from the Winterthur Kunstverein enabled him to travel to Auvergne and Provence.
In 1932 Zender became a member of the artist group Winterthur. His first exhibition in Switzerland, 1934 in the Kunstmuseum Winterthur, brought him recognition. After the Second World War, Rudolf Zender commuted between Paris and Winterthur.
In 1957, the city of Winterthur organized a large exhibition tribute to Rudolf Zender, together with works by Otto Charles Bänninger. From about 1950, Zender also painted and watercolored in Tuscany and Rome, where, for example, an impressive series of large-format watercolors of the Roman Forum was created.
In 1982, the Paris studio at Rue Beaunier 49 had to be abandoned. From now on Zender lived in Richterswil, later in Oberwil near Nürensdorf and in Winterthur. In his last years he spent the winter months in Ascona. Here he painted his last watercolors.
He died in 1988.

Today, June 30, is the birthday of

Miloslav Troup, Czech painter born in Hořovice in 1917.
He is one of the artists who, through their artwork, have significantly connected the Czech and French movements.
Still, this favourable response to Troup´s work was preceded by training at the State School of Graphics in Prague and at the State Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design where he studied the art and graphics of books. A scholarship in Paris, where he gained painting skills and experience, tremendously influenced Troup´s work. In the second half of the 1940’s, he studied at the “École des Arts décoratifs” and François Desnoyer´s studio; later he continued at the “École des Beaux Arts” under the guidance of Maurice Brianchon.

Soon, however, the dark cloud of the Iron Curtain settled across Europe and its shadow dramatically affected the art and life of Miloslav Troup. After some serious thought, he decided to return to his homeland rather than pursue his promising career in France. He never returned to Paris, which was so precious to him. For the remainder of his life he thought back to this City of Light and the French spirit thus remains omnipresent in his paintings and illustrations. After the return from France in 1950, he settled in Prague where he lived until his death. In his work, he continued expressing the trends established in Paris. Troup was mostly inspired by figurative painting and landscape painting. He found his favourites subjects not only in Prague and its historical architecture, but also in other places where he used to sojourn – in South Bohemia and the Mediterranean.

A vast and utterly exceptional work by Miloslav Troup is ranked among the best of Czech art culture in the 20th century. Thanks to its time in France, his work is also classified as a part of an international artistic movement. Considering the Czech environment, Troup´s work cannot be easily identified as belonging to some art movement or groups due to the fact that the artist was an individual who did not want to be associated with any mainstream art form at that time.
He died in 1993.

Susannah Martin (II) [Pintura / Painting]

Second post (the first one here) dedicated to the work of the American painter based in Germany Susannah Martin. After a first article in which I reviewed her paintings with dogs, a general selection of her outdoor nudes and a few reflections of the artist about her work, from several interviews of recent years.

«I think that the period in art history which speaks to me the loudest is the renaissance in the Netherlands and Germany. Particularly artists like Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, Van der Goes, Hans Holbein and sometimes Dürer, although he strikes me as more self-obsessed than the others. Rubens also came along later in that corner of the world and is very, very important to me. But it is the early renaissance painters van Eyck, Memling and Holbein to whom I return the most. I think it is not only the technical brilliance of their work but their extreme earnestness and depth that attracts me. There is an intensity in beliefs and psychological sensitivity in those works that floors me. It is hard for the contemporary viewer to imagine the concentration of mind and spirit independent of self-conscious style which went into that work so they strike us often as strange. I like strangeness in art as it is usually a sign that the artist was tapping into an authentically unique position.»

«With all of the past influences which can clearly be discerned in my work, it is still very contemporary. The early Realists and Naturalists are very important to me, of course. While I was studying in art school, Pop Art and Photorealism played a very important role for figurative painters and it´s impossible to imagine my work coming to be without either of those movements.»

«I started with people and I have gone back to painting people. In between, there was about a 20 year period of painting large scale murals and backdrops for businesses, private homes as well as film and photography sets. During that time I never had a chance to paint people, which ultimately made me very unhappy. I had a very brief phase of painting abstractly during art school, but that did not satisfy me. I need the direct inter-human confrontation which figurative painting can offer.»

«Certainly, concerning the female artist’s contribution to the history of the nude, we are in an early phase, relatively speaking. Women look at the body in a very different way than men do and this is reflected in the difference between how female artists approach the nude and how male artists approach the nude in art. This is a whole new spectrum of perspectives which have been unleashed, and I think it´s very exciting to watch and be part of. I also feel that the nude in art has been liberated to some degree as a result of the rise of a multi-billion dollar porn industry. Originally, the nude certainly was portrayed at least partly, for erotic purposes. Now, with the glut of pornography performing that role, perhaps it is more possible for the nude in art to confront broader issues of body, mortality, and the human condition. I feel like that is what´s happening. Not that the nude in art cannot be concerned with sexuality, but I think that even there, a different level of meaning comes out when it is not exclusively in the service of providing arousal. As far as the reception of these contemporary nudes is concerned, I would say it is mixed. Many people still believe that a nude has to be first and for most sexually appetizing and are genuinely upsetting if it is not. There are, however, just as many people who are open to consider other perspectives. Our animal nature remains the same, but our consciousness is expanding.»

«The public´s reaction to my nudes is always strong. They may love the paintings or hate them but they are rarely left cold by them, which gives me the sense that I am doing my job correctly. The longer that I paint the nude, the deeper I become aware of how limited the range of perspectives about the body has been so far throughout art history.  Sadly, I fear that the nude in art is often subjected to the same rigid aesthetic criteria that are imposed on the body itself in todays society.  Particularly when it applies to women. It continues to shock me to no end with what ease and presumptuousness people feel the right to judge womens bodies. The aesthetic judgement of the female body still seems to precede any legitimate contemplation of her as a human being. As far as the male figure is concerned, I find that many people are unwilling to contemplate it at all. To make a very general statement I would say that  for many people the female nude is worthy of contemplation only under certain aesthetic conditions and the male nude is often seen as an outright affront.»

«I think that greater problem is that my paintings are very confrontational and require the viewer to work with them. I prefer artwork which requires significant input from the viewer and I avoid heavy narration for this reason. A work of art, in my opinion, should be a dialogue, not a monologue. I don't want to tell people what to think, I want them to think and find the meaning within themselves. Sometimes I think that many people are just lazy when ti comes to art. They want to have a clear, easily digestible story which they can interpret in the usual 3,2 seconds and move on. A true art lover, however, enjoys a challenge and wants to be forced to pull new and interesting observations out of their subconscious. It is a process of self-discovery. These are the people who love my work and I am thankful to hear from them often. They usually are not afraid to talk about it.»

«I see painting as a necessary part of being, like eating or sleeping or having sex. People have always smeared marks on walls, floors, paper or whatever they could get their hands on.  The visual dialogue is a form of communication and humans have an inexhaustible need to communicate.  The visual dialogue is also between the artist and the physical world. It is a way in which we can explore and begin to fathom the world around us.  If there is anything to be accomplished with painting then I hope that it will in fact be the insight that I have gained and shared in the process.»
