Pintando perros / Painting Dogs (LXXXIV) - Norman Rockwell

Norman Rockwell fue un extraordinario artista estadounidense, ampliamente conocido por sus portadas del The Saturday Evening Post e imágenes para campañas publicitarias de diferentes empresas, con una habilidad notable para captar y representar gestos, actitudes e interacciones de personajes en escenas cotidianas llenas de humor y expresividad. Sus creaciones han estado presentes varias veces en este blog, y ahora les presento una selección de sus pinturas con perros.

Norman Rockwell was an extraordinary American artist, widely known for his covers of The Saturday Evening Post and images for advertising campaigns of several companies, with a remarkable ability to capture and represent gestures, attitudes and interactions of characters in everyday scenes full of humor and expressiveness. His creations have been featured several times in this blog, and now I present a selection of his paintings with dogs.

En 1956, Upjohn encargó a Norman Rockwell la creación de una imagen para anunciar su nueva línea de productos veterinarios. In 1956, Upjohn commissioned Norman Rockwell to create an image advertising its new line of veterinary products. Seeking to associate itself with the modern, scientific approach to animal medicine, Upjohn requested that the image project a sense of youthfulness and playfulness. Always attuned to his patrons' wants and needs, Rockwell suggested a scene of "a young, intelligent veterinary perhaps looking down a very cute dog's throat. The dog being held by its loving master" (quoted in The Picture of Health: Norman Rockwell Paintings, Stockbridge, Massachusetts, 2003, p. 25). Sotheby's

Las ilustraciones de las portadas de Rockwell eran ambiciosas y, como resultado, requerían horas de posado por parte de modelos dispuestos a ello. Rockwell encontraba fácilmente niños del vecindario dispuestos a posar para él, pero con los adultos era otra historia. Rockwell's cover illustrations were ambitious and as a result, required hours of posing by willing models.  Rockwell easily found neighborhood children who were eager to model for him, however adults were a different story.  The local inhabitants of New Rochelle, a working class town, often could not afford to take off the hours needed to pose.  As a result, Rockwell and his fellow illustrators resorted to hiring professional models for two or three days at a time. Fred Hildebrandt, with his fine bone structure and lean and lithe figure, quickly became one of Rockwell's favorite models and was in great demand by the other New Rochelle illustrators.  He was a versatile model who could easily and believably adopt the role of any character: pirate, hero, adventurer, or romantic figure. Rockwell and Hildebrandt became good friends and, in addition to appearing in a number of his paintings, Hildebrandt helped Rockwell around the studio when he could. Sotheby's

Over the course of his prolific career, Norman Rockwell executed over 300 cover illustrations for the Saturday Evening Post. In addition to these beloved commissions, Rockwell also produced countless illustrations and advertisements for over 150 American companies. (...)

From 1929 to 1961, Rockwell created images for the advertising campaigns of several healthcare firms, including the Upjohn companies. By the late 1930s, Upjohn had grown rapidly to become a major American pharmaceutical provider and hired Rockwell to help bolster its public image. (...)

Appearing as a print advertisement, He's Going to be Taller than Dad exemplifies Rockwell's masterful ability to elevate commercial endeavors into the aesthetic realm. Executed in 1939, it features many of the artist's most classic visual tropes. In this charming scene, Rockwell depicts a young boy in his home accompanied by his faithful canine companion, a scene that could have occurred in any American household. As the youngster stretches to increase his frame to a higher stature in his brightly colored room, Rockwell has clearly achieved the representation of a "good, average, healthy, attractive American child" the company requested from him (quoted in The Picture of Health: Norman Rockwell Paintings, Stockbridge, Massachusetts, 2003, p. 13). The apparent veracity of The Muscleman belies the careful planning with which Rockwell executed this—and all—of his compositions. Upjohn executives initially asked the artist to change the spotted dog to the all-white one already featured in another of his popular ads. Hobo and Dog features one of Rockwell’s favorite models of the period, James Kellogg Van Brunt. Van Brunt posed for Rockwell as a number of characters in a variety of narratives, including an apothecary (Druggist and Boy with a Cold, 1939, Private Collection), a melancholy cowboy (Dreams of Long Ago, 1927, Private Collection) and as three old ladies gossiping (The Gossips, 1929, Private Collection). In the present picture, Rockwell sympathetically depicts Van Brunt as a tramp roasting two sausages—one for himself and one for his dog—on a stick over a fire in a can. "Overheard Lovers" reflects the central role that the theme of young romance played in Rockwell’s body of work. This young couple appeared in several of the artist’s illustrations from the 1920s and 30s, allowing his audience to follow the progression of their courtship. In the early twenties, Norman Rockwell's studio was located on the second floor of a barn in New Rochelle, New York, which he rented for $25 a month from fellow resident George Lischke.  Rockwell, always on the lookout for a good model, employed Lischke's son Franklin to model for several paintings between 1921 and 1928, including several Saturday Evening Post covers, like No Swimming (June 4, 1921, see below). According to Susan Myer, "His pay rose from 50 to 75 cents per hour, and eventually he was promoted to Rockwell's 'studio boy' at $5.00 a week. His responsibilities included sweeping up the studio, running errands, and occasionally answering the phone to say that Rockwell was out when the artist was pressing to meet a deadline" (Norman Rockwell's People, 1981, p. 36). Rockwell described Franklin as "a narrow-shouldered, stringy adolescent with a round head. He was one of the most gullible kids I've ever known... his ability to digest fantastic stories was immense. Clyde [Forsythe] used to tell him the most atrocious things. He'd sit in the big armchair rubbing his knees and gulping it all in. Then he'd dash downstairs to tell his father, and later on Mr. Lischke would laugh about it with us. The Little Model is an exceptional example of Rockwell’s ability to capture the tender moments of childhood and adolescence with his sharp insight and characteristic humor. Here he depicts a young girl imitating the elegant pose of a fashion model whose image she studies from a well-worn poster that adorns the wall. The protagonist has done her best to emulate the model’s stylish attire as well, substituting her sophisticated fur stole for a tattered shawl and her chic feathered cap for a straw boater hat that has seen better days. "Two Plumbers" is among the most overtly comedic images the artist created for the publication. Here Rockwell depicts two rough-and-tumble plumbers sent to attend to the pipes in an unseen bathroom. Dressed for the task at hand and still holding the tools of their trade, the plumbers have discovered a frilly boudoir, ornately decorated in a symphony of ruffles and shades of pink. Intrigued by the array of the unfamiliar yet tantalizing objects on the table, their curiosity gets the best of them and—professionalism thrown aside—one sprays his partner with what is undoubtedly expensive perfume. The owner of the home has not yet returned but the room is guarded by a small lapdog that watches the intruders suspiciously, reinforcing the idea that they have happened upon a place where they truly do not belong.
