On March 27 is the birthday of

Jean Marie Constantin Joseph "Jan" van Beers, Belgian painter and illustrator born in 1852, the son of the poet Jan van Beers. They are sometimes referred to as Jan van Beers the elder and Jan van Beers the younger. In 1884, Jan Van Beers produced the pen-and-ink sketches for the edition de luxe of his father's poetry.
He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Soon afterwards, he became the leader of a group of young artists, the "Van Beers clique." This group included the artists Piet Verhaert (1852–1908), Alexander Struys (1852–1941), and Jef Lambeaux (1852–1908). They were well known for their mischievous and eccentric behaviour, including walking around Antwerp dressed in historic costumes.

Van Beers began his career as a history painter, producing works relating to the Renaissance. These included Funeral of Charles the Good, which was so large and contained so many figures that van Beers said he only recouped the costs of production, despite selling it for 12,000 Francs. In 1880 he moved to Paris and immediately abandoned historical pictures, producing instead genre and portrait works of the middle classes and developing a successful line in attractive draped young ladies reading a letter or a book or day-dreaming about a lover. He explained in an 1893 interview for the Westminster Budget that "all my pictures are from models, and I know where to find them whenever I want them. It requires a good deal of diplomacy to get them to pose. One has to pet and coax them, and even then they often leave you in the lurch."

Vanity Fair showed him in their 1891 caricature titled "The Modern Wiertz" (Antoine Wiertz, 1806–65). Van Beers' work was often compared to that of his Belgian predecessor, particularly the more macabre and grotesque elements.
He died in 1927.

On March 29 is the birthday of

John Russell, English painter born in 1745 in Guildford, Surrey, renowned for his portrait work in oils and pastels, and as a writer and teacher of painting techniques.
Russell was educated at the Royal Grammar School, Guildford, and soon showed a strong inclination for art. He trained under Francis Cotes, one of the pioneers of English pastel painting, and, like Cotes, was an admirer of the pastel drawings of Rosalba Carriera whose methods influenced his technique of "sweetening". At the age of 19 he converted to Methodism, which was the cause of tension with his family and with his teacher; he made no secret of his strong evangelical leanings and would attempt to preach and convert at every opportunity.
Russell set up his own studio, in London, in 1767.
His work caused him to travel extensively around Britain. In 1772, he wrote Elements of Painting with Crayons, by which time he had won premiums for his drawings from the Society of Arts in 1759 and 1760, and entered the Royal Academy school of art in 1770, winning its gold medal for figure drawing the same year. He exhibited at the Society of Artists of Great Britain in 1768 and showed 330 works at the Academy between 1769 until and his death.

In 1788, after a long wait, Russell was elected a royal academician. In 1789, he was commissioned to portray the royal physician Francis Willis. The results obviously pleased the monarch as, in 1790, he was appointed Crayon (pastel) Painter to King George III, Queen Charlotte, the Prince of Wales (both of whom Russell also painted) and the Duke of York. With such royal patronage, he developed a large and fashionable clientele.
Russell was a man of deep religious beliefs, a devout follower of George Whitefield. He began an elaborate introspective diary in John Byrom's shorthand in 1766 and continued it to the time of his death. In it, he recorded his own mental condition and religious exercises, and occasionally information concerning his sitters.
He was troubled by ill-health for much of his life and in 1803, became almost deaf following a bout of cholera.
He died in 1806.

On March 30 is the birthday of

Dora Hitz, Court Painter to the Romanian Royal Family, a member of the November Group and co-founder of the Berlin Secession, born in 1856 in Altdorf bei Nürnberg, Germany.
When she was six years old, her family moved to Ansbach and at thirteen she was sent to Munich to study at the "Damenmalschule der Frau Staatsrat Weber", an art school for young women, where she studied with Wilhelm von Lindenschmit the Younger. At the Art and Industrial Exhibition of 1876, she met and became acquainted with Elisabeth of Wied, the Queen consort of Romania (perhaps better known under her literary name "Carmen Sylva"). As a result, Hitz was appointed as the Court Painter. In addition to oil paintings and book illustrations, she also created fresco murals in the Music Hall of Peleș Castle in Sinaia.

After 1880, she lived in Paris, where she studied with Luc-Olivier Merson, Gustave Courtois, Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant and Eugène Carrière, who had the most influence on her style. She spent 1886/87 in Romania, then returned to Paris, becoming friends with Eugen Jettel and Hermann Bahr. She travelled throughout Brittany and Normandy and, in 1890, became a member of the Salon of the Société des Artistes Français. From 1892, she was a regular participant in the exhibitions of the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts.

Although she had been and would continue to be successful in Paris, she moved to Berlin in 1892and joined the "Vereins Berliner Künstlerinnen und Kunstfreundinnen" (an association of female artists) that gave her access to many upper middle-class clients who commissioned portraits. She founded a women's art school in 1894, operated a studio and struck up a friendship with Käthe Kollwitz. In 1898, she was one of the founding members of the Berlin Secession. She was awarded the Villa Romana Prize in 1906, which included a stipendium that enabled her to spend a year in Florence.
During World War I she began to experience financial difficulties, fell ill, and gradually became a recluse.
She died in 1924.

Abdalla Al Omari [Pintura / Painting]

What would the great world leaders look like, suffering from the deprivation and abandonment of refugees?
«I didn't have any exciting path towards Europe. I had an airplane, I had a visa to Paris because I had an exhibition at that time, but that doesn't stop me from talking about the collective problem that some collective community is facing through art.»
Abdalla paints powerful leaders with the aspect we usually see the displaced, as a way of confronting a frequently ignored reality that destroys millions of people lives every day around the world.
"I wanted to take away the power … to give back those leaders their humanity.”

Painting world leaders together in a rickety wooden boat as refugees trying to find a better future emphasises the shared responsibility for the state of the world. The painting can be viewed as a work in progress, as leadership is passed on and all problems inherited. One can find the faces of Xi, Trump, Obama, Merkel, Macron, Orban, Assad, May, Kim Jong Un, Cameron, Putin, Modi, King Salman, El Khameini. The leaders are often shown in provocative combinations, ironically challenging current relations between them.

The urban refugee camp of Yarmouk (in Arabic: مخيم اليرموك), in its beginnings, housed the largest number of Palestinian refugees, forced to emigrate from their own land once the Jewish invaders settled in the region in 1948. This settlement located within the Damascus Governorate, only 8 km. of the center of Damascus, the capital of Syria, represented the largest Palestinian refugee camp of the twelve existing within the country. Not officially recognized in 1948, nor founded by the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA), Yarmouk was established in 1957, by the General Authority for Palestinian Arab Refugees (GAPAR). It occupied a total area of 2.1 km, and with a population of around 150,000 people.
Over the years, this camp has become one of the largest in the Middle East. Due to the demographic and geographical expansion of the Syrian capital, Yarmouk is today one of the most populated and important districts of Damascus.

In “The Vulnerability Series,” Omari depicts President Donald Trump as an exhausted refugee, with a sleeping pad on his back and a child in his arms. The rest of the paintings show former President Barack Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and several other world leaders as “disenfranchised or displaced civilians.”
“Initially I was driven by my own experience of displacement and the anger that I felt, like any other Syrian, while the situation in Syria escalated. It was a personal desire in the beginning to imagine how would those supposedly great personalities look like if they were in the shoes of refugees, displaced.”

In response to the conflict in Syria, Omari initiated a project in support of Syrian children called “Charms of War” attempting to highlight the destructive impact of war on the lives of Syrian children. Furthermore, Omari has used his work as an active reminder of the huge need to support the Syrian refugees and the displaced.
