Rinocerontes (VI)

Alessandro de Medici, called "Il Moro", lived between 1510 and 1537. He was the last branch of the Medici who ruled Florence and the first hereditary duke. For more information, here. It comes about because the emblem of the house is, as shown, a rhinoceros.

Dollores Bryson Shelledy

"El jefe / The Boss", bornce / bronze, 2007

Dolores Shelledy Bryson is an American sculptor who makes life-size animals. He taught at the Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City, where he learned of the animals. Then when she dedicated to sculpture they become the main theme. This is a white rhino. I do not know who is the guy, but it serves to get an idea of the size. Interesting also the detail of the buphagus, birds that eat the skin parasites of these large herbivores.

Coming from the poorest strata of Zimbabwe, they founded their Metal Sculpture Project to represent African natural history through the work of this material, and so the way to get some money to survive.

Chris Williams

 "Rinoceronte / Rhinoceros", 2011

Rinoceronte para tu patio / Rhino for your Backyard

If you have $ 20,000 and want to make your backyard look a little more interesting, you can buy this rhino made with metal plates assembled as those wooden shed skeletons so fashionable some time ago. I do not have a garden ... nor dollars. More information here.

Dylan Lewis

South African sculptor Dylan Lewis was commited to create this bronze sculpture of a black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis), to place at the entrance of the Centenary Game Capture Centre, Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal. The order was made in the mid-90s to commemorate 100 years of conservation in the province. Hluhluwe-Imfolozi is renowned for its "Operation Rhino" who helped save the white rhino from extinction in the s. XX, when there were fewer than 50 specimens. Since the beginning of the operation, in the '60s, more than 10,000 white rhinos have been relocated around the world. In 2007 an identical version of this sculpture was auctioned by Christie's in London, and an anonymous buyer paid $ 356,000.

Brandon Borgelt

After several twists and turns, he ended up returning to Johannesburg where he set up a construction company where he has worked for the past 5 or 6 years. In his free time, he began flirting with clay ... In this case, depicting a black rhino in attitude of attack.

Xavier Veilhan

A set of exhibits, reflecting every aspect of his unique visual vocabulary, assured him international fame. His consecration was in 2009, with the exhibition "Veilhan Versailles"; the castle and its grounds offered an ideal setting for his sculptures and installations. I love the work of this artist and how his creations occupy spaces and fill them completely. They are not easily forgotten.

Aaron Kawara

Stops for books shaped rhino heads, designed by Aaron Kawara. I don't know much of this sculptor, but apparently works for STONE Sculpture Kingdom. He has some other sculptures with rhinos, average quality (at least for my taste).

Donald Greig

"Rinoceronte blanco / White Rhino", bronce / bronze

"Rinoceronte negro / Black Rhino", bronce / bronze, 45 x 16 x 20 cm.

"Rinoceronte negro / Black Rhino", bronce / bronze

It is not strange that many of the sculptors who have some rhinoceros to his credit are South Africans, as Donald Greig. Anyone who has seen some of his bronzes, knows that Donald is passionate about animals he sculpts. In fact, he spends countless hours in the forest studying, photographing and filming, to really understand the movements, habits ... their true nature. "Because the sculpture is three-dimensional," he says "you must know the structure of the animal body, their bones and how their muscles are formed, and how it looks from different angles."
Besides the lifesize white rhino, here you have also a couple more, medium and large size.

Naturaleza / Nature

I recently discovered surfing the Net that in many sites these photographs are attributed to  Laurent Schwebel, French photographed murdered in Buenos Aires, 2013, but is not true. I'll try to attribute the right credits.

Leszek Sokół

"Todo ese jazz / All That Jazz", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 24" x 29"

"Rapto de amor / Abduction of Love", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 32" x 32"

"Carta / Letter", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas

Der./ Right: "Amor declarado / Love Declared", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 40" x 32"

Immediately recognizable, the richly colored and intriguing paintings of Polish artist Leszek Sokol have been exhibited throughout Europe.  His distinctive, elongated figures with small heads, hands and feet dominate surreal dream-like landscapes.
Born in Warsaw, Poland where he still resides today, Sokol graduated from the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts where he focused on interior design and graphic art. His passion for painting, however, eventually overruled his other artistic interests.

Izq./ Left: "Don Quijote / Don Quixote", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 37" x 32"

"Cinco en punto / Five O'Clock", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 32" x 46"

Always fascinated by the 17th century paintings of the Dutch masters, Sokol first directed his talents toward still life compositions in the Dutch style.  His constant study of the techniques of the old masters, led him more recently to become entranced with figurative works of the early Italian Renaissance, the influence of which can be seen in this current body of work.
In attempting to define his work, the artist refers to his paintings as "metaphysical realism".  They have been described as "highly intellectual and philosophical."  In 2005, Sokol received a significant grant from Poland’s Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Info from this review.

George Grie

George Grie was born in May 1962. He graduated from the state university in 1985 with a BA (Honours) Degree in Fine Arts and Applied Design education. From the very onset of his professional career it had become very obvious that the traditionally accepted and politically bound routes of the Soviet Union art styles adopted by many of his peers would never be the path to follow. Instead, he chose to explore a more complicated and demanding adventure of innovative neo surrealistic painting wherein clear, concise yardsticks of competence, draughtsmanship and mastery can be tangibly measured and artistically appreciated.
As a result, his endeavours within this relatively short fine-art painting and applied arts career period (1985-1995) have brought considerable success with his neo-surrealist shows in several European capitals such as London, Stockholm, St-Petersburg, and Helsinki. Grie's paintings exhibit strong and powerful images that draw their energy from a visual impact. They are about capturing visual paradoxes; sometimes they would depict calm and contemplative moments, solitude, and melancholy. The stillness in his themes is an encouragement for introspection and self-observation. George Grie uses a photo realistic distinction technique which gives a stark contrast between the light source and the often-dark tonality found in his early paintings.

George Grie makes a life-altering decision to transform his artistic career dramatically when he settles in Toronto, Canada and studies the latest computer digital art techniques. He becomes a professional Multimedia Graphic Designer and joins the IBM Corporation as a lead new media specialist. His prime interest now is in contemporary 3D modeling software and their applications. A phase of a complete freedom of self-expression comes to play: the possibility of utilizing and combining his previous fine-art experience and classical painting education with the new digital projects becomes both realistic and fulfilling. His latest digital neo-surrealistic artworks employ a vast array of extraordinarily photo-realistic visual records of his conceptual thoughts, philosophic views, fantasies, and dreams.  Maria Fomitcheva, June 9, 2011
