Erika Sanada [Escultura]

Erika Sanada

Erika trabajando en una de sus piezas / at work with one of her pieces.

"Mi turno / My Turn", cerámica, vidriado / ceramic, glaze, 12" x 6" x 9", 2013

"Déjame ir / Let me go", cerámica, vidriado, tinturas, piel, bronce /
ceramic, glaze, stain, leather, bronze, 14" x 7" x 21", 2012

"Juego / Game", cerámica, vidriado / ceramic, glaze, 8" x 11" x 9", 2015

"Colega / Buddy", cerámica, vidriado / ceramic, glaze, 4" x 3" x 6", 2014

"Carga / Charge", cerámica, vidriado / ceramic, glaze, 12" x 6" x 9", 2014

Erika Sanada is a Tokyo-born artist who lives and works in San Francisco, United States. Her body of work revolves around strange creatures in which defects, mutations, additional appendices and fussions with other abound. However soft color gradients and textures of her ceramics contrast with these deformities and physical monstrosities, creating in the viewer ambiguous feelings between fascination, empathy and rejection.

"Opuesto / Opposite", cerámica, vidriado / ceramic, glaze, 5" x 11" x 3", 2013

«My work reflects the weird and the creepy; I am fascinated with the dark side. “Odd Things” is my current body of work and I use ceramic for making bizarre creatures. They have extra body parts such as multiple arms, legs, teeth and ears.  These are how I express my sensitive mind. There are two reasons I create misshapen and abnormal work. One is my bitter childhood and the second is my constant anxieties.»

"Juega conmigo / Play With Me", cerámica, vidriado / ceramic, glaze, 4" x 7" x 3", 2014

Izq./ Left: "Eco / Echo", cerámica, vidriado / ceramic, glaze, 13" x 8" x 7", 2013
Der./ Right: "Puedo manejarlo / I Can Handle It", cerámica, vidriado / ceramic, glaze, 13" x 4" x 5", 2013

«When I was young, my friends ignored and bullied me. As a result, I stayed indoors and watched supernatural movies and animations. They helped me escape from reality and gave me power. These movies showed main characters using magic to turn others into freakish animals and insects. This transformation inspired me to make work that reflected the images that I saw in those movies and animations.»

"Soldado retornado / Returned Soldier", cerámica, vidriado / ceramic, glaze, 14" x 6" x 8", 2014

"Coge al correcto / Pick The Right One", cerámica, vidriado / ceramic, glaze, 8" x 5" x 18", 2015

«I have had an anxious personality since I was a child. I worry about everything, even tiny things. Anxiety drags my mind to the dark side, which is more powerful and intense than my bright side. Sometimes I can’t move forward because I am emotionally paralyzed. I decided to go face-to-face with my anxieties by creating irregular and eerie creatures representing my dark side. As a result, these creatures show my twisted mind as I try to overcome anxiety through my creation.»

"Eres uno de nosotros / You Are One Of Us", cerámica, vidriado / ceramic, glaze, 11" x 6" x 7", 2014

"¿Me miras ahora? / See Me Now?", cerámica, vidriado / ceramic, glaze, 7" x 8" x 5", 2014

«As my work evolves, I’m always trying to insert more activity and gesture into the animals I sculpt. I feel my previous work was a bit stiffer and my new work reflects a more dynamic style of storytelling.»

"Voy a morder / I'm Gonna Bite", cerámica, vidriado, tinturas / ceramic, glaze, stain, 14" x 8" x 15", 2012

"Rómpeme / Tear Me Up", cerámica, vidriado / ceramic, glaze, 9" x 12" x 11", 2014

«HR Giger [see below] is my favorite artist. His Alien gave me the idea of a different type of beauty and I was so inspired by his alien designs. His art has been a reference and inspiration for some of my creatures and I liked his idea of a biomechanoid.»

"Picazón / Itchy", cerámica, vidriado / ceramic, glaze, 11" x 8" x 9", 2013

"Beso / Kiss", cerámica, vidriado / ceramic, glaze, 4" x 3" x 6", 2014
