Dan May [Pintura]

Dan May's universe is populated by furry giants, friendly animals and an atmosphere of calm and tranquility. There's a halo of sadness and loneliness in many of his creations, but also an implicit idea of harmony between beings, innocence and love for life and nature.

Dan May is a fine artist currently living in Cincinnati, OH. A native of Rochester, NY, Dan attended Syracuse University where he achieved a BFA and began to immediately pursue his artistic interests. As a modern narrative painter, May cultivates a rich texture of the surreal and mysterious in his highly original flowing style. His detail-intensive works have become widely recognized for their dreamlike ability to transcend the natural states of space and time – mostly due to his usage of a very finely honed usage of line. May’s propensity for using hair as a metaphor has become a focal point that he has built on to speak about larger aspects of humanity as well as the dream world, and gives a strong nod to his progressive personal growth and evolution as an artist. "I have a fascination with fine line. This serves not only an aesthetic purpose in my work, but it also has become a metaphor for personal growth and has grown to represent many other aspects of life on a grander scale. Everything from our place on this planet and our interactions with the life that inhibits it, to the subconscious dreamworld that exists in our minds… it is all connected in some way. There is a thread that flows through us all. This series of paintings is an attempt at illustrating this." D.M. [2]

"I’m still based in Florida, however I’m temporarily living in New York, helping out my father who has a rare form of dementia. It has been a stressful, yet enlightening and meaningful time for me and my wife. We are thankful to be near my father while he is suffering from this illness. Our visits make him smile, which means so much to us. This transitional period has had a profound influence on my work as well. I think that my pieces convey even more emotion than before, and reflect just how meaningful, yet fragile life is through its content. As I look back through my work, there is a noticeable shift in the in the way I am presenting images. While I’m still painting dream-like, surreal settings, the focal point is less on the playful creatures and more on creating images that convey a certain mood, and hopefully a deeper meaning to its viewer. While this may be disheartening to some, I feel that this personal growth will broaden my audience going forward." D.M. [4]

"My painting style is very detailed and at the same time embraces imperfections and large brush strokes. I often paint with very small brushes and work tediously to obtain a great amount of detail. I feel the subjects in my work come alive through this meticulous form of painting. I also put a great deal of emphasis on light within my work. This helps achieve the depth and emotion that I’m looking to create within each piece. Some may be surprised to know that my technique is very spontaneous and develops organically. I prefer to let my images unfold on the canvas. A painting may start out one way, but end differently than I had intended. I find that I rarely “stick to the script” so to speak." D.M. [5]
