On May 1 is the birthday of

Gus Heinze, American photorealist painter born in 1926.
From 1947-1950, Heinze studied under Robert Weaver, Howard Trafton, and Robert Ward Johnson at the School of Visual Arts and the Art Students League in New York. During the 1950s and 1960s he worked as a freelance commercial artist on Madison Avenue. In 1970 he began his career as a photorealist painter in Bondville, Vermont; many of his paintings from this period depict parts of automobiles and motorcycles in close-up.
In 1978 Heinze relocated to Marin County, California, and began exploring more diverse subjects. He increasingly moved toward storefront-window and city scenes, in a style that he calls "abstract realism," where the subject is real but the point of view and composition give the painting an abstract quality — resulting in a kind of reverse trompe l'oeil. As his works can appear half-real, half-abstract, it is not surprising that the artist himself describes abstract realism as "a total oxymoron."

On May 2 is the birthday of

Chaz Guest, American painter and sculptor born in 1961.
In 1986,Guest moved to Paris, France to work as a freelance fashion illustrator. Guest joined Joyce Magazine as an illustrator for their magazine covers. It was while working there that Guest met Christian Lacroix. Lacroix encouraged him to apply his illustrator skills to painting, after Lacroix saw one of Guest's illustrations of couture designs done for Joyce Magazine. After the 1987/1988 season, Guest left Joyce magazine and moved to Dax, France where he started painting.
After leaving the Fashion Institute of Technology, Guest began studying the paintings of Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali. Guest also studied the paintings of Balthus. In 1991,Guest sold his first painting to a passerby outside his Soho apartment.
Guest's first museum exhibit was a group show "Decoding Identity: I Do it for My People" (January 23, 2009 – March 22, 2009) at the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco (MOAD).

On May 3 is the birthday of

Boleslav William Felix Robert "Bill" Sienkiewicz, Award-winning American artist and writer born in 1958, best known for his comic book work, primarily for Marvel Comics' The New Mutants and Elektra: Assassin. Sienkiewicz often utilizes oil painting, collage, mimeograph and other forms generally uncommon in comic books.
Sienkiewicz began drawing when he was about four or five, and continued doing and learning about art throughout his childhood. His early comic-book influences include artist Curt Swan Superman comics, and artist Jack Kirby's Fantastic Four.
After art school, he showed a portfolio of his work to DC Comics' art director Vince Colletta, which led to his breaking into the field at age 19.
He started drawing Moon Knight, in The Hulk [black-and-white comics] magazine. His art style was heavily influenced by Neal Adams.
Sienkiewicz continued as artist of the Moon Knight color comics series, starting with the first issue (November 1980). Four years later, after a stint as artist on the Fantastic Four, he became the artist on Marvel's X-Men spin-off New Mutants, beginning with issue No. 18 (August 1984), producing cover paintings and character designs. From this period on, Sienkiewicz's art evolved into a much more expressionistic style, and he began experimenting with paint, collage, and mixed media. He illustrated New Mutants from 1984 - 1985.
Sienkiewicz produced covers for a range of Marvel titles, including Rom, Dazzler, The Mighty Thor, Return of the Jedi and The Transformers, and drew the comic adaptation of Dune.
Sienkiewicz's own first writing credit was for the painted story "Slow Dancer" in Epic Illustrated in 1986.

On May 4 is the birthday of

Mihail (Mikhail) Mikhailovich Chemiakin (Михаи́л Михайлович Шемя́кин), Russian (ethnic Circassian (Kabardian)) painter, stage designer, sculptor and publisher, and a controversial representative of the nonconformist art tradition of St. Petersburg born in 1943.
Mihail Chemiakin spent his early years in East Germany. His father served in the Army there. His family returned to the Soviet Union in 1957 and he studied at the secondary school of art affiliated with the Ilya Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). In 1961 he was subjected to forced psychiatric treatment to "cure" him of views that did not conform to Soviet norms.
He later got a job at the Hermitage Museum. With his colleagues from the museum he organized an exhibition in 1964, after which the director of the museum was fired and all the participants forced to resign. In 1967 he co-authored with philosopher Vladimir Ivanov a treatise called "Metaphysical Synthesism", which laid out his artistic principles, and created the "St. Petersburg Group" of artists . In 1971 he was exiled from the Soviet Union for failing to conform to Socialist Realism norms. He settled in France, then moved to New York in 1981, and currently lives in France.

On May 5 is the birthday of

Ernest-Eugène Hiolle, French sculptor who specialized in classical and allegorical figures in plaster and bronze, as well as many contemporary portrait busts.
Hiolle was born in Valenciennes, where he studied at the École Académique, before studying under François Jouffroy and Laurent Séverin Grandfils at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was runner up in the Prix de Rome of 1856 and in 1863 won the award. Exhibiting at the Salon from 1866, he won medals from 1867-1870. After 1870 he participated in the great public building projects of the French Third Republic with sculpture for the Palais Garnier, the Hôtel de Ville, Paris, and elsewhere. In 1873 he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur. At the salon of 1877 he exhibited bronze busts of Jouffroy and Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, and at that of 1878 a bronze statue of General Maximilien Sebastien Foy. He also won a medal of honour at the Exposition Universelle (1878).
His students included Antonin Carlès.
He died in 1886.

On May 6 is the birthday of

Edward "Ed" Clark, African-American abstract expressionist painter and one of the early experimenters with shaped canvas in the 1950s. Edward Clark stated:
"..all great artists can only do what they esteem to be right. No matter how it appears at first, it will always be beautiful."
Ed served In World War II in the US Air Corps, stationed in Guam.
He studied from 1947 to 1951 in The Art Institute of Chicago with Helen Gardner and Louis Ritman. Under the GI Bill of Rights which financed the higher education of recruits, Clark took residence in Paris in 1952. He enrolled at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière where he studied until 1953.
His paintings are included in the permanent collections of The Art Institute of Chicago; the Detroit Institute of Arts in Detroit, Michigan; the Studio Museum in Harlem in New York, New York; the Metropolitan Museum in New York, NY; the Museum of Modern Art in New York, NY and many more.

* He died on October 18, 2019

On May 7 is the birthday of

Tadeusz Mysłowski, Polish painter, printmaker, photographer born in 1943.
He is a well known and appreciated artist. Many critics commented on his work, referring to philosophical inspiration, metaphysical sources, geometry and biology, to the architecture of the square and to the organic construction, as well as to homage he pays to the precursors of the avant-garde.
By combining the findings of Euclid's geometry with Bertrand Riemann's new dimensions and Benoit Mandelbrot's sets, which verify the Theory of Chaos, Mysłowski gained a powerful instrument for transforming imagery.
Mysłowski's records result from images created both naturally and mechanically, and their indisputable common feature is the fact that they are the “cultural property of man” as Claude Levi-Strauss put it. Living organisms are an important complement to the matter formed of lines, planes or constructions.

On May 8 is the birthday of

Miguel Ângelo Lupi, Portuguese painter and art professor born in 1826, who worked in the Romantic style. He was known primarily for portraits and historical scenes. He showed and early talent for art and was enrolled at the Lisbon Academy of Fine Arts in 1841, where he studied with António Manuel da Fonseca.
After graduating in 1848, he discovered that he could not support himself entirely by painting, as his parents had warned him, so he obtained a position at the "Imprensa Nacional de Lisboa" (the government printing office) as an assistant bookkeeper. He remained there, while continuing to paint, until 1851, when he was transferred to the Finance Board for what was then the Province of Angola, and lived in Luanda for two years.
In 1859, he was appointed Court Clerk. In that capacity, he was commissioned to paint a portrait of King Pedro V for use in the courtroom. The painting met with great approval and resulted in a state grant for him to continue his art studies in Italy.
He won several awards at the Exposition Universelle (1878) and a major retrospective of his work was held shortly after his death in 1883.

Today, May 9, is the birthday of

Santiago Caruso, Argentine illustrator born in 1982. He is a symbolist artist of a decadent avant-garde language, standing out both for the vigor of its poetry as well as for its technique. Dedicated to the fantastique, among his most important illustrated books you can find:
Jane Eyre  (Folio Society); El Horror de Dunwich, La Condesa Sangrienta and El Monje y la Hija del Verdugo  (Libros del Zorro Rojo); El Eco de mis Muertes  (Self edition) and many more.
Between 2005 and 2011, he published his art on the mythical magazine Caras y Caretas. He has also makes book covers for Tartarus Press, Nightshade Books, Black Labyrinth, Dark Regions Press, Random House Mondadori, Planeta and Páginas de Espuma, among others. Also, he has created the visual concept of  music albums of different bands from America and Europe.
