Oisín (Austin) Kelly, Irish sculptor born 1915 in Dublín.
Until he became an artist in residence at the Kilkenny Design Centre in 1966, he worked as a school teacher. He initially attended night class at the National College of Art and Design and studied briefly in 1948–1949 under Henry Moore.
He originally concentrated on small wood carvings and his early commissions were mostly for Catholic churches. He became well known after he was commissioned to do a sculpture, The Children of Lir (1964), for Dublin's Garden of Remembrance, opened in 1966 on the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rising. More public commissions followed, including the statue of James Larkin on Dublin's O'Connell Street.
He died in 1981.

On May 18 is the birthday of

Lim Hak Tai (林学大), one of Singapore's pioneer artist at the turn of the 20th century, and was the person who inspired the Nanyang School of art form, to reflect the 'Nanyang' (South-east Asia) region, both in painting style and subject matter.
He was Born in Xiamen, Fujian Province in China (1893). He graduated from the Provincial Art Teacher's Training College in Fuzhou in 1916, and went on to the Amoy Art Teacher's College specialising in Western and Chinese art. He came to Singapore at the outbreak of Sino-Japan War in 1937, and taught art at The Chinese High School and Nan Chiau Girls High School (now Nan Chiau High School) for a year. In 1938, he was appointed as the first principal of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.
Lim was a dedicated art educator and an accomplished painter in Singapore, and have taught many art students - some on to becoming accomplished Singaporean artists. He was also the first to articulate the notion of a 'Nanyang style' art that involved local and South-east Asian tropical representations using Western painting techniques. As such, Lim persuaded his peers Cheong Soo Pieng, Chen Wen Hsi, Chen Chong Swee and Liu Kang to seek inspiration from their Balinese excursion in 1953, developing what is known today as the Nanyang School of Painting.
He died in 1963.

On May 19 is the birthday of

Victor Heinrich Seifert, German sculptor born in 1870. After the First World War was one of the busiest sculptors. Along with Hans Dammann and Hermann Hosaeus, they enriched German cities and towns with war memorials.
He attended schools in Vienna and Munich, and studied at the Museum of Decorative Arts. Also in Berlin, at the Academy of Arts. He studied with Ernst Herter, Peter Breuer and Ludwig Manzel.

On May 20 is the birthday of

Andreas Schlüter, German baroque sculptor and architect born in 1664, associated with the Petrine Baroque style of architecture and decoration.
He probably did spend several years abroad as Journeyman.
Schlüter's first known work was the decoration of the facade of the St. Johannis Chapel, or Danzig Royal Chapel, in 1681. He later created statues for King John III Sobieski's Wilanów Palace in Warsaw and sepulchral sculptures in Żółkiew (Zhovkva). In 1689, he moved to Warsaw and made the pediment reliefs and sculptural work of Krasiński Palace.
Schlüter was invited to Berlin in 1694 by Eberhard von Danckelmann to work as court sculptor at the armory (Zeughaus) for Elector Frederick III. His sculpted decorations are a masterpiece of baroque expression and pathos. While the more visible reliefs on the outside had to praise fighting, the statues of dying warriors in the interior denounced war and gave an indication of his pacifist religious beliefs (he is said to have been a Mennonite). Travelling through Italy in 1696, he studied the work of masters like Michelangelo Buonarroti and Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
He died in 1714.

On May 21 is the birthday of
