Julie Bell [Pintura]

Julie Bell

"Lobo Alfa / Alpha Wolf", óleo sobre tabla / oil on wood, 18" x 24"

"Nonie", óleo sobre table / oil on wood, 24" x 18", 2012

«Siempre he amado la mitología.

"Hada, boceto / Fairy, Sketch", 2001

"Salto / Leap", 2012

"Quakertown Horse", óleo sobre tabla / oil on wood, 24" x 18"

"Norn Fates", óleo sobre panel / oil on artist board, 30" x 40"

"Pegaso / Pegasus", grafito / graphite, 18" x 13", 2008

Julie Bell is a well known artist born in Beaumont, Texas in 1958. She shares her life and her studio in Pennsylvania with her husband, Boris Vallejo.
She felt from an early age that she was destined to become a professional artist. But when the time came that she wanted to bring this dream to reality, it was in the field of fantasy/science fiction illustration that she found her home.

"Nariz rosa / Pink Nose", óleo sobre tabla / oil on wood, 8" x 10", 2012

"Bermellón / Vermilion", óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 30" x 30"

For years Julie worked on fantastic painting, both as artist creating her own compositions and as a model for Boris. In this sense, the human figure has been always very important for her. «I have always had a fascination for the human form, and that's one of the reasons I started bodybuilding. Bodybuilding did make me much more aware of the muscles and skeletal structure of the body than I would have been without it. Also, it helped me in understanding movement. I studied many years of dance -- ballet, tap, gymnastics, modern dance -- all of which helped me understand the lines that are created with specific poses. I use all of this background and knowledge when I have models pose for me or when I create a painting.»

"Divinos recuerdos, boceto / Divine Memory, Sketch", 2001

"Odin", óleo sobre tabla / oil on wood, 9" x 12", 2007

«I’ve always loved mythology. Of course I was really influenced by Boris, but before that I was really interested in the work of Edmund Dulac (see below), and other fairytale artists. These are watercolours so it was a very different kind of thing, but it still had that fantasy use of colour and design. I figure fantasy allows us to use the bodies in a way that we want to in the paintings, it’s so fun to be free when you are creating. Fantasy settings give you freedom.»

"Un sueño sobre un árbol y un dragón / A Dream about a Dragon and a Tree", 2012

"Sombras / Shadows", óleo sobre tabla / oil on wood, 18" x 24"

In 2000, she was given an assignment by TOR Books to paint covers for a series of fantasy novels that starred a large wolf with magic powers. To get reference material for her assignment, she visited the Lakota Wolf Preserve and, by the end of the afternoon photo session, she had fallen in love with the wolves.
The success of that first wolf painting brought more animal assignments as well as private commissions which included horses. Now she is finding a new sense of herself in painting the animals just as they are, without supernatural powers.

"Cabeza de lobo / Wolf Head", grafito / graphite, 18" x 13", 2000

La orden de los lobos / The Order Of Wolves", óleo sobre tabla / oil on wood, 18" x 24", 2009

«When I’m painting animals with all their beauty and wild nature, I experience the kind of at-one-with-the-universe feeling described by people who meditate.  It’s both soothing and exciting, the way nature itself is. I know without a doubt that this is what I was meant to do.»

"Lo que yo quiera / Whatever I Want", 2004

"Dios oscuro / Dark God", 2003

"El Vitral", 1999

Julie has won two Chelsea Awards and was the designer of the popular and award-winning Dragons of Destiny series. She also has won numerous first place awards in the Art Renewal Center’s International Salon and has been named as a Living Master.

"Vuelo fantástico / Fantasy Flight", 2003

"Serpent Sage", 1990

"Reino Inmortal / Immortal Realm", 2001
