Muere Lacy Duarte

Ayer, 27 de Diciembre, falleció la artista visual uruguaya Lacy Duarte. Mis respetos a su familia, en especial a sus hijos Pedro y Pablo, y mi homenaje con esta cita.

Yesterday, December 27, passed away Uruguayan visual artist Lacy Duarte. My respects to her relatives, especially her sons Pedro and Pablo, and my tribute with this note.

Lacy Duarte fue una artista visual uruguaya nacida en Mataojo, Salto, en 1937.
Se crió en un entorno rural que marcaría su vida y su obra. En 1952 se trasladó a la Ciudad de Salto y en 1954 ingresó al Taller Figari de la Asociación Horacio Quiroga donde asistió a clases con el pintor húngaro José Cziffery, formado en París en el taller de Henri Matisse.
En 1959 se casó con el pintor Aldo Peralta, con quien tuvo dos hijos, Pablo y Pedro, también artistas. En 1962 la familia se trasladó a San Carlos en el departamento de Maldonado, donde dio clases de dibujo en el liceo y aprendió la técnica del tapiz. En 1975 a causa de la dictadura militar en Uruguay la familia se mudó a Porto Alegre, Brasil. De regreso en San Carlos creó el taller Duarte Tapices con un grupo de tejedoras. En 1981 falleció su esposo y poco después se trasladó a Montevideo, donde retomó la pintura. En 1987 fue seleccionada para integrar el envío uruguayo a la Bienal de La Habana. Expuso en Europa y Estados Unidos.
A partir de 1990 trabajó en series que incluyen pinturas y objetos, tallas en madera, objetos de miga de pan, colchas de trapos (traperas), en instalaciones que refieren a su origen, a la condición de la mujer y los niños en el campo, a las faenas rurales (Ceibos y panes, Bretes, Trampas, Venceduras, Traperas). Su proyecto Memoria y ritos en el espacio de la mujer campesina, refiere a su traslado a la ciudad como una pérdida de referencias culturales.
Murió en 2015.

Lacy Duarte was a Uruguayan visual artist born in Mataojo, Salto, in 1937.
She grew up in a rural environment that would mark her life and work. In 1952 she moved to the city of Salto and in 1954 entered the Figari Workshop, of the Association Horacio Quiroga, where she attended classes under Hungarian painter José Cziffery, formed in Paris in the studio of Henri Matisse.
In 1959 she married the painter Aldo Peralta, with whom she had two sons, Pablo and Pedro, also artists. In 1962 the family moved to San Carlos in the department of Maldonado, where she taught drawing in high school and learned the technique of tapestry. In 1975 because of the military dictatorship in Uruguay, the family moved to Porto Alegre, Brazil. Back in San Carlos Duarte created the Tapestry workshop with a group of weavers. In 1981 her husband died and soon after moved to Montevideo, where she resumed painting. In 1987 she was selected to integrate the Uruguayan sent to the Havana Biennial. She exhibited in Europe and the United States.
From 1990 she worked on series including paintings and objects, wood carvings, from the crumb of bread, bedspreads rags (ragpickers) in installations that refer to her origin, the status of women and children in the countryside, rural tasks (Ceibos and breads, Bretes, Traps, Venceduras, Traperas). Her project Memory and its rites in the space of rural women, refers to her transfer to the city as a loss of cultural references.
She died in 2015.
