On December 6 is the birthday of

Jean Frédéric Bazille, French Impressionist painter born in 1841.
He became interested in painting after seeing some works of Eugène Delacroix. His family agreed to let him study painting, but only if he also studied medicine.
Bazille began studying medicine in 1859, and moved to Paris in 1862 to continue his studies. There he met Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Alfred Sisley, was drawn to Impressionist painting, and began taking classes in Charles Gleyre's studio. After failing his medical exam in 1864, he began painting full-time. His close friends included Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, and Édouard Manet. Bazille was generous with his wealth, and helped support his less fortunate associates by giving them space in his studio and materials to use.
Bazille was just twenty-three years old when he painted several of his best-known works, including The Pink Dress (ca. 1864, Musée d'Orsay, Paris). His best-known painting is Family Reunion of 1867-1868 (Musée d'Orsay, Paris).
Frédéric Bazille joined a Zouave regiment in August 1870, a month after the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War. On November 28 of that year he was with his unit at the Battle of Beaune-la-Rolande when, his officer having been injured, he took command and led an assault on the German position. He was hit twice in the failed attack and died on the battlefield at the age of twenty eight.

On December 7 is the birthday of

Julio Prieto Nespereira, Spanish painter and engraver born in Orense in 1896.
He won several national awards including the National Medal of Arts (1932) and the Duque de Alba prize in the national competition organized by the Fine Arts Circle in Madrid (1934).
In 1917 he moved to Madrid to study painting with the then director of the Museo del Prado, Alvarez de Sotomayor. This collaboration remained until 1921. He wrote in some Galician magazines like "Alfar" and "Nós". In 1928 he crossed the Atlantic to visit Buenos Aires and Montevideo, where he exhibited his work. On his return to Spain he founded the group of writers "The Twenty-four."
He worked as a restorer of Spanish heritage during the Civil War, along with Ramón Stolz Viciano, and the Prado Museum architect José Lino Vaamonde. He spent the last years of his life organizing exhibitions of his prints.
He died in 1991.

On December 8 is the birthday of

Adolph Friedrich Erdmann von Menzel, German artist born in 1815, noted for drawings, etchings, and paintings. Along with Caspar David Friedrich, he is considered one of the two most prominent German artists of the 19th century, and was the most successful artist of his era in Germany.
His popularity in his native country, owing especially to History Painting, was such that few of his major paintings left Germany, as many were quickly acquired by museums in Berlin. Menzel's graphic works and drawings were more widely disseminated; these, along with informal paintings not initially intended for display, have largely accounted for his posthumous reputation.
Although he traveled in order to find subjects for his art, to visit exhibitions, and to meet with other artists, Menzel spent most of his life in Berlin, and was, despite numerous friendships, by his own admission detached from others. It is likely that he felt socially estranged for physical reasons alone—Menzel had a large head, and stood about four foot six inches.
He died in 1905.

On December 9 is the birthday of

Sarah Hall, Canadian stained glass artist born in 1951 in Hamilton, Ontario, notable for her extensive career, and current experimentation in the integration of photovoltaic technology into art glass. She lives in Toronto.
Hall's work has received several International First Place Awards for outstanding Liturgical art from both the Interfaith Forum on Religion, Art and Architecture, and Ministry and Liturgy.
Most recently, Hall was awarded a Chalmers Arts Fellowship (Ontario Arts Council): to research and integrate photovoltaic technology (solar energy collection cells) into her art glass installations. This unique fusion is the first of its kind in North America, and first premiered at the Solar Decathlon in Washington, DC.

On December 10 is the birthday of

Johannes Gelert, Danish-born sculptor, who went to the United States in 1887 and during a span of more than thirty years produced numerous works of civic art in the Midwest and on the East Coast.
He was born in the town of Nybøl, southern Denmark in 1852. He demonstrated an early talent for art and after moving with his family to Copenhagen in 1866 was apprenticed to a woodcarver. In 1870 he enrolled in the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he graduated with honors in 1875. For the next ten years he worked and studied in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, France and Italy, becoming a protégé of some of Europe’s leading sculptors.
Immigrating to America in 1887, Gelert established his studios in Chicago. He became a citizen of the United States in 1892 and four years later married Georgine Sundberg, with whom he had three children. He moved his studios to New York City in 1898 and lived there until his death in 1923.

On December 11 is the birthday of

Adolph Alexander Weinman, German-born (1870) American sculptor and architectural sculptor.
He arrived in the United States at the age of 14. At the age of 15, he attended evening classes at Cooper Union and later studied at the Art Students League of New York with sculptors Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Philip Martiny. He later served as an assistant to Charles Niehaus, Olin Warner, and Daniel Chester French. Weinman opened his own studio in 1904. Although Weinman is now best remembered as a medalist, when he once was introduced as such he vehemently denied being one and said that he was an architectural sculptor.
Weinman was a member of the National Sculpture Society and served as its president from 1927 to 1930. He also served on the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts from 1929 to 1933.
Despite his objections, Weinman is still best remembered as the designer of the Walking Liberty Half Dollar (a design now used for the obverse of the American Silver Eagle one-ounce bullion coin) and the "Mercury" dime along with various medals for the Armed Services of the United States.
As an architectural sculptor, Weinman's work can be found on the Wisconsin, Missouri, and Louisiana state capitol buildings.
Weinman's non-architectural works include the Macomb and the Maybury monuments in Detroit. Another example of his non-architectural work is his Abraham Lincoln Statue (Kentucky) located in the center of Hodgenville, Kentucky.
He died in 1952.

Today, December 12, is the birthday of

Karl Pavlovich Briullov (Карл Павлович Брюллов), also transliterated Briullov or Briuloff and referred to by his friends as "The Great Karl", was a Russian painter born in 1799 in St. Petersburg. More images and information in previous posts.
He died in 1852.
