Pintando perros (XXXIII)

Los perros de Veronés / The Dogs of Veronese

In the first post of this "Painting Dogs..." series I included a couple of works by this artist.
In almost all important paintings by Veronese, dogs occupy a significant place. Always in the foreground or as companions of their masters. Unlike other artists and workshops where dogs were painted serially, here we can see a variety of races, positions and attitudes.
Texts in english at the end of this post marked with [*] in each paragraph.

"Cena en casa de Levi o Comida en casa de Simón Fariseo / The Feast in the House of Levi"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 555 x 1280 cm., segunda mitad del s.XVI / 2nd third of 16th century.

Transcribo algunos párrafos a continuación. Texto completo (en inglés) aquí. [3]

"Cena en casa de Levi / The Feast in the House of Levi" (detalle / detail)

"La cena en casa de Simón el fariseo / Christ at Dinner in the House of Simon the Pharisee"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 451 x 315 cm., 1560. Galleria Sabauda (Torino, Italia / Italy)

"Venus y Adonis", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 162 x 191 cm., 1580.

"Alegoría del amor, IV: Unión feliz / Allegory of Love, IV: Happy Union"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 186 x 186 cm., c.1575.
National Gallery (Londres, Inglaterra / London, England)

[1]
Paolo Caliari, known as Paolo Veronese, was an Italian Renaissance painter born in 1528 and based in Venice, most famous for large history paintings of both religious and mythological subjects. With Titian, who was at least a generation older, and Tintoretto, ten years older, he was one of the "great trio that dominated Venetian painting of the cinquecento" or 16th-century late Renaissance. Veronese is known as a supreme colorist, and after an early period with Mannerist influence turned to a more naturalist style influenced by Titian.

[2]
His most famous works are elaborate narrative cycles, executed in a dramatic and colorful style, full of majestic architectural settings and glittering pageantry. His large paintings of biblical feasts, crowded with figures, painted for the refectories of monasteries in Venice and Verona are especially famous, and he was also the leading Venetian painter of ceilings.

[3]
The meal in his painting of the House of Levi also depicts a multitude. There were likely many reasons for this choice. Painters were often paid by the figure; it also offered an opportunity to concentrate on festive coloration or demonstrate skill at composition without having to overly dramatize the individual gesture. Painting crowds, however, was not without risk, for the variety of pedestrian intrusions of dogs and sundry persons into the Levi painting drew the attention of the Inquisition.

About the presence of these dogs and people in the works, there is a very interesting text refers to an interrogation by the Inquisition to the artist regarding his painting "The Feast in the House of Levi". I copy here part of it. Full text here.

[4]
Q. Do you not know that in Germany and other countries infested by heresy, it is habitual, by means of pictures full of absurdities, to vilify and turn to ridicule the things of the Holy Catholic Church, in order to teach false doctrine to ignorant people who have no common sense?
A. I agree that it is wrong, but I repeat what I have said, that it is my duty to follow the examples given me by my masters.
Q. Well, what did your masters paint? Things of this kind, perhaps?
A. In Rome, in the Pope's Chapel, Michelangelo has represented Our Lord, His Mother, St. John, St. Peter, and the celestial court; and he has represented all these personages nude, including the Virgin Mary, and in various attitudes not inspired by the most profound religious feeling.
Q. Do you not understand that in representing the Last Judgment, in which it is a mistake to suppose that clothes are worn, there was no reason for painting any? But in these figures what is there that is not inspired by the Holy Spirit? There are neither buffoons, dogs, weapons, nor other absurdities. Do you think, therefore, according to this or that view, that you did well in so painting your picture, and will you try to prove that it is a good and decent thing?
A. No, my most Illustrious Sirs; I do not pretend to prove it, but I had not thought that I was doing wrong; I had never taken so many things into consideration. I had been far from imaging such a great disorder, all the more as I had placed these buffoons outside the room in which Our Lord was sitting.

These things having been said, the judges pronounced that the aforesaid Paolo should be obliged to correct his picture within the space of three months from the date of the reprimand, according to the judgments and decision of the Sacred Court, and altogether at the expense of the said Paolo.

[5]
He has always been appreciated for "the chromatic brilliance of his palette, the splendor and sensibility of his brushwork, the aristocratic elegance of his figures, and the magnificence of his spectacle", but his work has been felt "not to permit expression of the profound, the human, or the sublime", and of the "great trio" he has often been the least appreciated by modern criticism. Nonetheless, "many of the greatest artists ... may be counted among his admirers, including Rubens, Watteau, Tiepolo, Delacroix and Renoir".

[6]
Veronese develops a mythological theme in this painting. It represents Venus, having on his lap sleeping Adonis. She strokes him and gives air. The position of Adonis is a foreshortening. Wear red robes that contrast with the white skin of Venus; another difference is the light: Venus is illuminated, while Adonis rather remains in the shade. Adonis was a young fan of hunting and goddess senses that he will die in one of their raids, so try to keep him. The goddess looks at Cupid, who is petting a greyhound. It has also been interpreted that dog, unlike the one in the ground sleeping, is eager to go hunting, and Cupid holds him by force, to prevent wake the young. They believe that if Adonis awake he will go hunting. These three figures are part of a living landscape of dark greens and blues in the sky.
Text from here.

[7]
This painting is part of the group: Four Allegories of Love.
A couple are united at the hands of a nude woman assisted by a boy – possibly Venus and Cupid, although they lack traits that would identify them securely. The union between the couple is marked by a laurel wreath, signifying their virtue, and an olive branch symbolising peace. The gold chain wielded by the boy probably refers to marriage, while the dog is a symbol of fidelity.

Eduardo Espino
(Montevideo, Uruguay, 1947-)

"Abstracto con cruz dorada / Abstract With Golden Cross"
Técnica mixta sobre papel secante / mixed media on blotter, 13 x 16 cm., 2000

"Espiral emergente / Rising Spiral", técnica mixta / mixed media, 16 x 14 cm.

"Sol negro con cruz / Black Sun With Cross", acrílico sobre papel / acrylic on paper, 21 x 31 cm., 1995

"Pájaro Abstracto / Abstract Bird"
Técnica mixta sobre madera prensada / mixed media on hardboard, 61 x 42 cm., 1995

"Aparición / Appearance", acrílico sobre tela / acrylic on canvas, 47 x 53 cm., 2002

"Pez / Fish", acrílico y óleo sobre cartón / acrylic and oil on cardboard, 47 x 68 cm., 2001

"Cuadrado / Square", acrílico sobre tela / acrylic on canvas, 40 x 30 cm., 2003

"Abstracto con rombo / Abstract With Rhombus"
Acuarela sobre papel / watercolor on paper, 11 x 15 cm., 2000

"Ahora / Now", acrílico sobre madera prensada / acrylic on hardboard, 41 x 50 cm., 2013

"Corazón charlatán / Blatherer Heart"
Acrílico y collage sobre cartón / acrylic and collage on cardboard, 64 x 50 cm., 2002

"Collage con hoja II / Collage With Leaf II"
Dibujo y collage sobre papel / drawing and collage on paper, 24 x 19 cm., 1998

"Sol y Flecha / Sun and Arrow", acuarela sobre papel / watercolor on paper, 12 x 14 cm., 2000

[1]
Eduardo Espino is a Uruguayan artist born in Montevideo in 1947, a few years later moved with his family to the city of Minas.
«As a child, I played there in the house of my aunt, and in the other side, there were people painting. At one point I had an accident in which I twisted a hand and it was plastered (left arm), and drew during that months, and I found great pleasure in that. That was long before I knew of workshop. When I met the workshop both things joined, and I crossed to the other side (*) and then I joined the workshop. (...) There it began my love for painting. It took me so much time being there that my father was worried that I quit studies. After eventually we moved to Montevideo. I did preparatory in Montevideo and I joined the studio of Eduardo Ribeiro. Those were my beginnings.»

(*) Eduardo told me that the "other side" was the fence that separated the house of his uncles - in which he spent much time - from the workshop in which he saw people painting. It was when he passed to "the other side" of the fence when he joined in that workshop.

[2]
Since 1965 he has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Uruguay, Argentina, Japan, USA and Puerto Rico, participating in exhibitions and art competitions where he won several awards. Since 1980 he has developed a teaching workshop, both state and private cultural centers. Alongside Joaquin Aroztegui founded in 1982 Workshop "Cubo del Sur (South Cube)". Later he continued in the workshop 'Taller Yaro Sur', who currently runs.

[3]
«Freedom, as a thing, is a pipe dream, it doesn't exist as a final state of anything, but we have it there as a goal, and that goal leads to liberation. We are liberating us. In art it is fundamental. (...) The act of painting is an act of liberation.» E.E.

[4]
«Eduardo's work is a constant search, a construction from random elements around which he begins to shape the whole. As Osman Astesiano says, the artist "goes finding and with his ability to equilibrate, with his knowledge of the weight of both the color and tone and structure, the work is formed. (...) We can see spots, but the spots have a reason. That spots are measured. Eduardo stain and equilibrates. Sometimes he triangulates, sometimes he structures orthogonally, and that gives it a solidity.»

[5]
«I am assuming that I haven't to explain much what I do because somehow that is work of the viewer. You will not give him all done. He needs to work, do a different job, but has to work. (...) If I can explain a painting in two or three words in a talk of twenty minutes and the picture is understood ... it's over. I must hide this painting, because language is essential, the written or spoken word, but painting is something else.»
For Eduardo, the artwork is "like a door that connects one spirit with another spirit." E.E.

[6]
«I use a lot of different materials, different tools, different media, but the important thing is that when I work I newer know which one will be the end of that story. It's an adventure where the elements as they are added, they create a dialogue with each other, and I let myself go a little. The material is also involved; when I put a red or a circular shape next, it starts saying things and I have to be aware. The watchful eye, as if to hear. As Klee said. "When I paint, I am red". » E.E.

[7]
«... Through the relationship with Guillermo Fernandes and even earlier, with the members of "El Cerro": Clarina Vicens, Graciela Ruiz, Mario Mosteiro, Ernesto Darmosh, somehow he was incorporating elements of Constructive Universalism, the teachings of Torres García to his work. In many of the works Espino used measure such as Golden Section is typical of Torres García workshop, and other items that sometimes are not formally in the work; lines or structures that somehow disappear but are behind the images.»
Pedro Da Cruz, researcher and art critic.

On May 26 is the birthday of

Dorothea Lange, influential American documentary photographer and photojournalist born in 1895, best known for her Depression-era work for the Farm Security Administration (FSA). Lange's photographs humanized the consequences of the Great Depression and influenced the development of documentary photography.
Lange was educated in photography at Columbia University in New York City, in a class taught by Clarence H. White. She was informally apprenticed to several New York photography studios, including that of the famed Arnold Genthe. In 1918, she moved to San Francisco, and by the following year she had opened a successful portrait studio.
With the onset of the Great Depression, Lange turned her camera lens from the studio to the street. Her studies of unemployed and homeless people captured the attention of local photographers and led to her employment with the federal Resettlement Administration (RA), later called the Farm Security Administration (FSA). She died in 1965.

Wols was the pseudonym of Alfred Otto Wolfgang Schulze, German painter and photographer predominantly active in France, born in 1913. Though broadly unrecognized in his lifetime, he is considered a pioneer of Lyrical Abstraction, one of the most influential artists of the Tachisme movement. He is the author of a book on art theory entitled Aphorismes de Wols.
His father was a patron of the arts who maintained friendships with many prominent artists of the period, including Otto Dix. In 1919, the family moved to Dresden, where consequently he found his love for art in 1927. In 1924, Schulze was given a still camera, an event that, along with the death of his father in 1929, became one of the defining moments of his life. In 1930 he began to pursue an apprenticeship with his camera at the Reiman-Schule, the Berlin school of applied art.
In 1936, he received official permission to live in Paris with the help of Fernand Léger; as an army deserter, Schulze had to report to the Paris police on a monthly basis. Beginning in 1937, he actively worked on his photographs, which were shown in many of Paris's most prestigious galleries. He died in 1951.
