Henk Helmantel is a Dutch painter born in 1945 in Westeremden.
«I always wanted to paint; that began very early. 1956 was a Rembrandt year, and newspapers and journals were full of reports and reproductions of his work, which I diligently saved. In those days it was normal to have paper-collecting campaigns to raise money for school excursions, and it was my job to bundle the paper. That gave me the opportunity to look through all the papers for reproductions; in that Rembrandt year the harvest was very rich. I have always been extremely fascinated by Rembrandt. And although technically my work evolves in a different way perhaps you can still detect traces of his influence in my work. The extent to which I am occupied with light has certainly been inspired by solutions which Rembrandt came out with. In mentality, though, I stand closer to someone like Vermeer. Rembrandt liked drama, whereas I strive more for solutions leading to clarity of composition.»

«My parents were not very happy when they first knew of my choice to become a painter. In general it was thought that art was not the best way to make a living. As far as that is concerned my parents were no different from other parents. Parents want their children to turn out well and be able to support themselves. But they never held me back because they knew me well enough to know that I would follow my own course. I began my study at Minerva Art Academy in the early 1960's, just before the revolution of that time. Everything had to be changed down with authority, down with the previous rules, and long live freedom. Coming from a protected Christian com-munity I was naturally thrown to the lions. It was an exception to believe in God, and I had to learn either to defend myself or change course. That period taught me a lot and stimulated my spiritual growth. I had a fairly classical education. There was room for experimentation, but also room to explore the more familiar tradition of painting. Besides painting according to a kind of academic impressionism, I made paintings which were very realistic, and this was considered exceptional. I aimed for an effect of tangible, palpable reality. It was an approach which had fallen out of grace and it really took people by surprise.»

Roman glass and Chinese skirt on Spanish table", 122 x 171 cm., 2001

«After my Minerva period it finally became clear where my greatest strength lay. When in 1967 I finished military service and became an independent painter I made impressionistic work: landscapes, flower still lifes, and portraits. At the same time I was making finely worked-out paintings. It was to these that both ordinary people and also my teachers reacted most strongly; they found that they had the most character. Such reactions stimulated me to go on in this direction. Still, it is strange that I have always maintained a great interest in the more impressionistic approach. You can see this in the collection we have in our home, where the accent generally lies on paintings which have been painted in a looser way, with freer brushwork.»

Henk Helmantel is simply a painter of the twenty-first century. You can see for yourself by looking and comparing. He may draw inspiration from the work of illustrious predecessors, he may like to paint old objects with a "past"; his work was made by a painter who received his education and training in the twentieth century. His work is widely appreciated and internationally appreciated. A highlight was an exhibition in Taiwan in 1997, where a hundred works from his own collection were exhibited in a beautiful museum. There were also exhibitions in the USA, in Germany, Czech Republic, Malaysia, England, France and Indonesia. In the Netherlands, his work was exhibited at the Singermuseum, the Drents Museum and the monastery museum in Ter Apel. Every year in the summer thousands of people go to Westeremden to enjoy Museum Helmantel in the beautiful Weem, the surrounding gardens, the old Andreas Church and the exhibited work from our own collection. Paintings made by a painter who still believes in beauty as an essential goal of his work with brush, palette knife and oil paint.

In the northeast of the province Groningen lies between Groningen and the Dollart the old Warftdorf Westeremden. Here stands the rebuilt medieval pastorate-with-farm of Henk and Barbara Helmantel. This building is typical of the painter's interest in the past. In 1914, on the site of his present house, a mansion had been built for the pastor. In the year 1967 Helmantel became its owner. In the garden he discovered the foundations of the medieval pastorate, called "Weem" in Groningen. After a few years the plan matured in him to rebuild this old pastorate. The reconstruction took place between 1974 and 1981 in two phases. The last completed part, the old barn, is now a generous exhibition space, especially for the annually changing exhibition of his own works from his collection.

"Once when a group came to visit a woman said to me: "Sir, I can't take this; this has entirely nothing to do with reality. You portray a world which does not exist, and I cannot stand it." We had quite a conversation about it. I told her that there are all sorts of people in the world, each with his own task. I see it as my task to practise my profession in my own way. That in turn is a part of reality as a whole. What I portray is not divorced from reality but contained in it. Alongside war there is also peace, alongside tiredness there is energy for living, next to misery there is pleasure, and so on; life as well as death. I am someone who tries to evoke a world of harmony, that which makes people feel good and which can be of benefit to them in difficult circumstances.

I'm not trying to fulfil a social function, but indirectly my work seems to have that effect. In the midst of so many things which are not right, people experience here at "De Weem" a feeling like: Ah, here we can come to our senses for awhile. But if I were to turn my painting into some sort of ideology, a program, then I would miss the point.

Aniversarios / Anniversaries (CCXC) [Mayo / May 1-5]

Todos los aniversarios de Mayo aquí / All anniversaries for May here.
_________________________________________________________

On May 1 is the birthday of

Konstantin (Kostia, or Constantin) Andreevich Tereshkovich (Константин Андреевич Терешкович), Russian painter and engraver born in 1902 in the outskirts of Moscow, French naturalized in 1943.
He was a painter of animated scenes, interiors, figures, portraits, landscapes and still lifes. Terechkovitch was also a watercolorist, painter of tapestries, lithographer and realist poet.
After his graduation at the age of fifteen, his parents sent him to study fine arts in the studio of the Moscow painter Constantin Youon. He then entered the competition, where he was awarded third out of five hundred candidates to the School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture of Moscow, in the studio of Pavel Kuznetsov. In the same year 1917 the Russian revolution broke out, disrupting civil society. Taking this as an opportunity, he decided left for Paris, then capital of the arts, that he will reach only in 1920 after multiple adventures during "three years of wandering which lead him to Ukraine, to the Caucasus, in Persia and Constantinople."
Terechkovitch arrived at the Gare de Lyon in Paris on August 2, 1920. There After three days of wandering, a Russian Jew to whom he entrusts his odyssey greets him, finds him a maid's room on the Boulevard de Magenta, and a job in a shoe-box factory.

"Danseuse du Bal Tabarin / Bailarina del Bal Tabarin / Dancer of Bal Tabarin"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 81 x 44,8 cm. Christie's

The third month, the important sum of six hundred francs won by a happy Sunday at the races of Chantilly permitted him to resign to devote himself to the study of the masters of the Louvre Museum and the visit of the galleries. The fourth month, another happy coincidence makes him find boulevard Saint-Michel the painter Lazare Volovick, which revealed him the existence of Montparnasse ("all the painters are there", said Volovick). He joined with Moses Kisling, Pinchus Krémègne, André Lanskoy and especially Chaïm Soutine who became his great advisor and with whom he began twenty years of reciprocal esteem, tensions and reconciliations.
In 1939, he joined the Foreign Legion and was demobilized in 1940. During the German occupation, he and his family took refuge in a house near Avallon. In this period he painted most of the portraits of the artists he admired, notably Pierre Bonnard.
After the Second World War, settled in a pavilion on Boulard Street, Tereshkovitch travels, is interested in all major sports competitions, including horse racing and the Olympic Games (to be attended every four years will take him to around the world), and settled in Menton for some time. He was named knight of the Legion of Honor in 1951.
The themes of maturity for his painting were mainly his family and two daughters France and Nathalie, after having painted many dancers, landscapes (edges of Marne, beaches, seaside, countryside and villages).
He died in 1978.

On May 2 is the birthday of

Meszlényi Attila, Hungarian ecological writer, painter, animated film director, musician, and composer born in 1954. His work as a painter and thinker is dominated by the theme of nature and our relation to it.
Attila has lived in seclusion since 2006. He prefers not to exhibit his work, publishing only on the Internet. His more recent works in relation to the ecology topic are available in parts online. Meszlényi Attila states: “every piece of work is worthy of respect only if it creates more value then it destroys; the canvas coated in paint by itself is no more valuable then the flax and cotton it is made of.”
Graduated in applied graphic arts from Képző- és Iparművészeti Szakközépiskola (Fine and Applied Arts School) in 1972. Against his parents’ and teachers’ wishes, he did not continue his education as he did not want to move away from everyday life. He also believed that self-education was worth more than institutional education. He spent the following years doing various, mostly physical jobs such as baker, stone sculptor, decorator, plumber etc. He continued his art activities in his free time beginning to turn towards films.
Attila took part in a study called ‘A magyar film formanyelve és közleménye’ about film semiotics in cooperation with László Beke, Özséb Horányi, András Lányi and Róbert Vadas led by Péter Józsa. Spotted by Foky Ottó, he started directing animated films in Pannónia Filmstúdió from 1977 to ’79, mostly parts of the popular cartoon series ‘Frakk, a macskák réme’.

"Hermelin nyári szőrben / Armiño con pelaje de verano / Stoat in Summer Coat"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 24 x 30 cm, 2013. Colección privada / Private Collection, Horváth Levente

After the series ended, he started working as a freelance graphic designer. Made covers and illustrations for no less than two hundred books, drew many slide films, occasionally took commercial graphic design work orders as well. Since 1980, he is member of Művészeti Alap (Artist Fund) and its successor organisation Magyar Alkotóművészek Országos Egyesülete (National Association of Hungarian Artists).
In 1983, he founded an early music ensemble, Musica Profana, in which he played the baroque flute and musette till 1993.
Due to the instigation of Muray Róbert and Dr. Zoltán Attila, from 1987, he started painting wild birds and mammals of Europe and occasionally other continents, mixing naturalist depiction with various stylistic elements.
In 1990, he founded (and has been leading ever since) the TARON TÁRSASÁG (called Gondolkodókör after 2001). Between 1998 and 2006, he was a regular participant of national exhibitions and fine art biennales.

On May 3 is the birthday of

José Gallegos y Arnosa, Spanish painter and sculptor born in 1857 in Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz.
After his first stage of learning in his hometown, he left for Madrid in 1873, helped by his patron Guillermo Garvey, a winemaker, and began a new stage at the San Fernando Academy. Later he also traveled to Tunisia and Morocco, attracted by the light and the suggestive atmosphere of these exotic lands. In 1878 he painted Arab Wedding, a painting purchased by the Spanish Government, and in the same year he left for Rome in order to expand his knowledge, thus fulfilling the wishes of his patron. In 1880 he decided to settle there for good.

Today, May 5, is the birthday of

Nicolae Grigorescu, Romanian painter born in 1838 in Pitaru, Dâmboviţa County, Wallachia, now Romania.
In 1843 the family moved to Bucharest. At a young age (between 1846 and 1850), he became an apprentice at the workshop of the painter Anton Chladek and created icons for the church of Băicoi and the Monastery of Căldăruşani. In 1856 he created the historical composition Mihai scăpând stindardul (Michael the Brave saving the flag), which he presented to the Wallachian Prince Barbu Ştirbei, together with a petition asking for financial aid for his studies.
Between 1856 and 1857, he painted the church of the Zamfira monastery, Prahova County, and in 1861 the church of the Agapia monastery. With the help of Mihail Kogălniceanu, he received a scholarship to study in France.
In the autumn of 1861, young Grigorescu left for Paris, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. He also attended the workshop of Sébastien Cornu, where he had as a colleague Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Knowing his weaknesses, he concentrated drawing and composition. However, he soon left this workshop and, attracted by the artistic concepts of the Barbizon school, he left Paris for that village, where he became the associate of artists such as Jean-François Millet, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Gustave Courbet and Théodore Rousseau. Under the influence of the movement, Grigorescu looked for new means of expression and followed the trend of en plein air painting, which was also important in Impressionism. As part of the Universal Exposition of Paris (1867), he contributed seven works. Then he exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1868 the painting Tânără ţigancă (Young Gypsy girl).

He returned to Romania a few times and starting in 1870 he participated in the exhibits of living artists and those organized by the Society of the Friends of the Belle-Arts. Between 1873 and 1874 he traveled to Italy, Greece and Vienna.
In 1877 he was called to accompany the Romanian Army as a "frontline painter" in the Romanian War of Independence. During the battles at the Grivitsa Strongpoint and Oryahovo, he made drawings and sketches which later used in creating larger-scale works.
In 1889 his work was featured in the Universal Exhibition in Paris and at the Romanian Atheneum. Centerpiece exhibits took place at the Romanian Atheneum would follow in 1891, 1895, 1897, 1902, and 1905.
From 1879 to 1890 he worked in France, especially in Vitré, Brittany, and in his workshop in Paris. In 1890 he settled in Câmpina and started depicting pastoral themes, especially portraits of peasant girls, pictures of ox carts on dusty country roads and other landscapes. He was named honorary member of the Romanian Academy in 1899.
He died in 1907.
