On January 21 is the birthday of

Peter De Wint, English landscape painter born in 1784 in Stone, Staffordshire.
De Wint was the son of an English physician of Dutch extraction who had come to England from New York. He moved to London in 1802, and was apprenticed to John Raphael Smith, the mezzotint engraver and portrait painter. He bought his freedom from Smith in 1806, on condition that he supplied 18 oil paintings over the following two years.
In 1806 he visited Lincoln for the first time, with the painter of historical subjects William Hilton, R.A., whose sister Harriet he married in 1810. De Wint and Hilton lived together in Broad Street, Golden Square, where John Varley lived. Varley gave De Wint lessons and introduced him to Dr Monro, who ran an informal academy for young artists.

De Wint first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1807, and the following year at the Gallery of Associated Artists in Watercolours. In 1809 entered the Royal Academy schools. He was elected an Associate of the Old Water Colour Society in 1810 and was made a full member the following year. By that time, as an established drawing-master, he was spending his summers teaching well-to-do provincial families. In 1812 he became a member of the Society of Painters in Watercolours, where he exhibited for many years, as well as at the Academy.
He painted admirably in oils, and he ranks as one of the chief English watercolorists. "No artist", asserted Alfred William Rich, "ever came nearer painting a perfect picture than did Peter de Wint". He frequently visited his wife's home city of Lincoln, and many of his panoramic landscapes and haymaking scenes are set in Lincolnshire. He occasionally toured in Wales, and in 1828 travelled to Normandy.
He died in 1849.

On January 22 is the birthday of

Moïse Kisling, born Mojżesz Kisling, French painter born in 1891 in Kraków, Austria-Hungary.
He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Kraków. His teachers encouraged the young man to go to Paris, France, considered the international center for artistic creativity in the early 20th century.
In 1910, Kisling moved to Montmartre in Paris, and a few years later to Montparnasse; he joined an émigré community made up of artists from eastern Europe as well as Americans and British.
At the outbreak of World War I, he volunteered for service in the French Foreign Legion. After being seriously wounded in 1915 in the Battle of the Somme, he was awarded French citizenship.

Kisling lived and worked in Montparnasse, where he was part of its renowned artistic community. For a short time he lived in the Bateau-Lavoir in Montmartre, and in 1911–12 spent nearly a year at Céret.
In 1913 he returned to Montparnasse, where he took a studio and lived for the next 27 years. The artists Jules Pascin and later Amedeo Modigliani lived in the same building. He became close friends with many of his contemporaries, including Modigliani, who painted a portrait of him in 1916 (in the collection of the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris). His style in painting landscapes is similar to that of Marc Chagall. A master at depicting the female body, his surreal nudes and portraits earned him the widest acclaim.

Kisling volunteered for army service again in 1940 during World War II, although he was 49. When the French Army was discharged at the time of the surrender to the Germans, He emigrated to the United States, and exhibited in New York City and Washington. He settled in California, where he lived until 1946. He then returned to France after the war and defeat of Germany.
He died in 1953.

On January 23 is the birthday of

Alison Baily Rehfisch (Alison Baily Green), Australian painter born in 1900 in Woollahra, Sydney, who grew up in Mosman.
Her mother, who was a proficient sculptor, painter and musician, encouraged her interest in painting and drawing. As a student at Redlands School, Cremorne from 1913–15, she was influenced by the painter Albert Collins.
Upon leaving school, she studied at Julian Ashton's Art School before marrying in 1919 and as Alison Rehfisch studied around 1925 under Antonio Dattilo Rubbo at the Royal Art Society. It was here she met George Duncan and they began sharing studio space.
She began exhibiting at the Blaxland Gallery in 1929 and it was around this time that she and her husband split up and she moved into a studio apartment with Dorrit Black, Rah Fizelle, Thea Proctor and Adelaide Perry. She left for London in 1933, where she studied, worked and travelled, including a 3-month stay in Spain. After hearing of her husband's death in 1938, she returned to Sydney and in 1942 married George Duncan.

In 1947 their home burnt down and Alison lost several hundred paintings. Friends arranged an auction at the home of Desiderius Orban. She and George moved to the country and took to painting landscapes around Berrima, Moss Vale and Goulburn but returned to Sydney in 1953 when George secured a position as director of David Jones Art Gallery. They bought a house "Hillgrove" in Pymble which she decorated extensively, but spent little time on more mundane tasks. She was active with the Contemporary Art Society and the Contemporary Group. She continued to paint her still lifes and landscapes but concentrated more on flower paintings, which lowered her reputation as a serious painter.
After George died of cancer in 1974, she was inconsolable and less than a year later, with deteriorating eyesight and suffering depression, committed suicide by swallowing poison.

On January 25 is the birthday of

Otto Scholderer, German painter born in 1984 in Frankfurt am Main.
On completing his schooling, Scholderer went to the Städel academy of arts in 1849, where he remained until 1851. Among his teachers were the art historian Johann David Passavant and the painter Jakob Becker. Subsequently, Scholderer established himself in Städel as a freelance painter. During this period his friendship with Victor Müller began; Scholderer became his brother-in-law in 1868.
Through Müller, Scholderer became acquainted with the works of Gustave Courbet. Scholderer made several short study trips to Paris between 1857 and 1858, where he became friends with Henri Fantin-Latour and Édouard Manet, whose influence can be seen in his subsequent work. Fantin-Latour depicted Scholderer in his picture Studio aux Batignolles. Starting from 1858, Scholderer worked and lived predominantly in Kronberg in Taunus, where his colleagues included Anton Burger, Peter Burnitz and Louis Eysen; he was close to the Kronberger painter colony.

"Au / En el / At the Moulin Rouge"

On January 26 is the birthday of

In 1882 he went to Paris and began studying art at Léon Bonnat's studio, where he met Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The two artists later moved to the studio of Fernand Cormon, where they befriended Émile Bernard and Vincent van Gogh.
Around 1887, Anquetin and Bernard developed a painting style that used flat regions of color and thick, black contour outlines. This style, named cloisonnism by critic Edouard Dujardin, was inspired by both stained glass and Japanese ukiyo-e. One example of this can be seen in Avenue de Clichy: Five O’Clock in the Evening, argued by Dr. Bogomila Welsh-Ovcharov as being inspiration for Van Gogh's famous Cafe Terrace at Night.

He eventually fell from the public's eye after abandoning the modern movements, opting instead to study the methods of the Old Masters. Thus, Anquetin's works following the mid-1890s, such as Rinaldo and Armida, were especially Rubensian and allegorical in nature. In 1907 he met Jacques Maroger, a young artist who shared his interest, with whom he collaborated.
Later in life, Anquetin wrote a book on Rubens, which was published in 1924.
He died in 1932.

On January 20 is the birthday of

Jerzy Tomaszewski, war name Jur, Polish World War II photographer, artist, and reporter, born in 1924 in Warsaw.
Tomaszewski is best known for the roughly 1,000 photographs of the Warsaw Uprising which he took in 1944. He was assigned by the Polish underground Bureau of Information and Propaganda (BIP) to document the battle. He photographed in the districts of Powiśle, Śródmieście and Wola, until he was wounded on September 6, 1944. The last photo he took was of the several bodies lying in the street of the Old Town, without signs of life.
Tomaszewski completed a clandestine course in photography in Warsaw in 1940 as a 16-year-old boy. He was transferred by the Armia Krajowa to Studio "Fotoris" in downtown Warsaw, which was a popular German photo-processing shop; a Polish underground cell was already there. Tomaszewski's job was to copy the German photographs on microfilm (including pictures of executions), and take them outside. The microfilms were smuggled to London where the Polish government-in-exile kept publishing the evidence of war crimes. In 1943 the Gestapo traced the evidence back to Studio "Fotoris". Tomaszewski escaped along with Mieczysław Kucharski. The studio manager, engineer Andrzej Honowski was ambushed and killed in the struggle with Gestapo. Tomaszewski went into hiding, but kept working at a clandestine lab on Chmielna Street until the Warsaw Uprising broke out. That's where he obtained the now-iconic photograph, of the mass murder of Jews in the village of Ivanhorod by the SS.

During the Uprising, Tomaszewski was one of several dozen Polish photographers following the battle. Under heavy fire, he used to extend his hand out with the camera and shoot without showing his head. Nevertheless, he was seriously wounded, and ended up at a prisoner camp in Pruszków. Tomaszewski returned to Warsaw in February 1945 thinking that his enormous archive had burned down. For years, he refused to take pictures until one day, the rolls of film he took were discovered hidden in a metal container by courier Wacława Zawadzka. About 600 frames were still in a very good shape. In 1977 a big exhibition of his photos were arranged for the first time in Warsaw. Two years later, Tomaszewski published his groundbreaking photo-anthology called Epizody Powstania Warszawskiego (Episodes from the Warsaw Uprising). He was awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta (Krzyż Oficerski Orderu Odrodzenia Polski) on 29 July 2007.
Jerzy Tomaszewski is the brother of artist Stanisław Miedza-Tomaszewski (also a member of the Polish resistance in World War II).
He died in 2016.

On January 21 is the birthday of

Emile-Dupont Savitry, French photographer and painter born in 1903 in Saigon, Vietnam.
Associated with poet Robert Desnos and painter André Derain and the Surrealists, Savitry exhibited in 1929 at dealer Zborowski's gallery a sellout show, the catalogue essay of which was penned by celebrated Surrealist poet Louis Aragon (1897-1982). However, though on the threshold of artistic fame he decamped to Polynesia.
Savitry was accompanied on his journey to the tropics by surrealist painter Georges Malkin and Yvette Ledoux, a young American woman whom he'd just met. Savitry had taken a Gaumont Block-Notes 6x9 camera, and happened upon an beached 'ghost ship'. Friedrich W. Murnau, in the middle of shooting his ill-fated movie Tabou, was impressed by Savitry's boat picture and engaged him on his team to research Polynesian iconography and to make film stills.
On return to Paris in 1930 he commenced a career as a photographer, co-founding with Charles Rado, Brassaï and Ergy Landau in 1933 the Rapho agency. For Rapho, he covered the massive refugee influx into the South of France from the Spanish Civil War. His reportage for Match and other magazines also features his close friend Django Reinhardt, whom he met in Toulon and whose installation with his family in Paris he sponsored, introducing Django into the jazz scene at La Boîte à Matelots at 10 rue Fontaine.

From 1932 to 1934, he assisted Brassaï (1899-1984). In February 1939, his reportage on the rue Pigalle theatre precinct is published in Paris Match.
Mobilized in September 1939, he joined the battalion of Engineering in Avignon.
After the war, he helped to revive the Rapho agency in Paris, joined there by Robert Doisneau and Willy Ronis.
He was later a regular contributor to fashion magazines Vogue, Jardin des Modes and Harper's Bazaar. He was also published in the 1950s in Regards, Visages du Monde, Cavalcade, Point de Vue et Images du Monde, Caliban, Picture Post and Réalités.
He is best known for his portraits of mid-century personalities, many of whom were close friends.
He died in 1967.

Today, January 26, is the birthday of

Nacio Jan Brown, American photographer born in 1943, who began his training in the arts by studying painting at Southern California’s Chouinard Art Institute from 1961 to 1962, but he fell into his true artistic calling when he bought a camera so that he could photograph his mural-sized artworks.
Making his home in Berkeley in 1965, he studied photography at the Associated Students of California (ASUC) studios, where he both learned about craft and pushed against the dominant “house style,” which led students to produce “contemplative nature studies” in the mode of Edward Weston.

Oakland protest during Stop the Draft Week, October 1967. The photographer caught, in this photograph, a threshold moment of tension — the beginning of a day of mass protest.

Inspired by the coalescing protest movements—against the Vietnam War, against racism, against police power—Brown thought of his photography as “a craft in service of a cause.” He became a staff photographer for the San Francisco Express-Times, San Francisco’s main underground paper, and for half a decade captured the drama of major and minor protests alike.
One of his most important works is his study of the scene around Telegraph Avenue—a scene that had been his own since he’d learned the art of photography in Cal’s student darkrooms half a decade before. Whether roaming the Avenue or nursing a cappuccino at Caffé Med, he took to toting a binder with a three-inch spine, full of dozens of his own photographs. When he approached people to photograph them, he often offered the binder as proof—that he was a real photographer with a real project, and was coming to it from an angle of sympathy.

The book that resulted, Rag Theater, is now seen as a classic of street photography, prized for its arresting depiction of the countercultural scene that swirled around Telegraph, and its intimate rendering of the energy and turmoil of the times.
Brown continued shooting photographs after completing work on Rag Theater, creating visually captivating shots of film directors ranging from Martin Scorcese and Lina Wertmuller to Russ Meyer and George Franju.
