"Sonia durmiendo / Sonia Sleeping", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 191 x 232 cm., 1964.

"Ocre oscuro sobre naranja y rojo / Umber on Orange and Red"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 177,8 x 256,54 cm., 1951

"Tarde / Evening I", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 243,84 x 121,92 cm., 1957

"Las gemelas Rounds ante la cámara / The Rounds Twins, Before the Camera", 2005

"Pintor y modelo / Painter and Model", 2008

Textos en inglés / English translation

On September 11 is the birthday of

Thomas Hill, American artist born in 1829. He produced many fine paintings of the California landscape, in particular of the Yosemite Valley, as well as the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
At the age of 24, Hill attended evening classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) and studied under American painter Peter Frederick Rothermel (1812–1895). During his years as a student, Hill traveled to the White Mountains in New Hampshire as early as 1854 and sketched alongside members of the Hudson River School, such as Benjamin Champney. In 1856, Hill and his family moved to San Francisco, California.
With painter Virgil Williams and photographer Carleton Watkins, Hill made his first trip to the Yosemite Valley in 1865. The next year, Hill traveled to the East Coast and Europe. He established his family on the East Coast but continued to take sketching trips to the West Coast and to attend meetings of the San Francisco Art Association. He moved his family back to San Francisco in 1873.
Hill made yearly sketching trips to Yosemite, Mount Shasta, and, back east, to the White Mountains. Hill ran an art gallery and art supply store. He briefly acted as the interim director for the SFAA School of Design and went to Alaska on a commission for environmentalist John Muir. He lived on his stock market investments as well as his art proceeds.
He died in 1829.

On September 12 is the birthday of

Jon Schueler, American painter born in 1916.
Schueler originally wanted to become a writer and, after acquiring his MA at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1940, he worked for a short time as a journalist. The Second World War interrupted his writing. From 1941 to 1944 he served as an Army Air Corps navigator and flew numerous missions in a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber out of Molesworth, England, over France and Germany.
After the war, he moved to San Francisco and taught English while he began attending the California School of Fine Arts where he studied with Edward Corbett, David Park, Hassel Smith, and Richard Diebenkorn. He chose Abstract Expressionism as his preferred style and moved to New York in 1951, where he became part of the New York School of artists. His first solo exhibition was in 1954, at the Stable Gallery.
He died in 1992.

On September 13 is the birthday of

Jerome Witkin, American figurative artist born in 1939 in Brooklyn, New York, whose paintings deal with political, social and cultural themes, along with serious portraiture that melds the sitter's social position with a speaking likeness that reveals inner character. Witkin has been succinctly characterized as "a virtuoso figurative painter whose work mixes elements of the old masters, social realism and Abstract Expressionism ..."
He's the twin brother of photographer Joel Peter Witkin. Recognized as a prodigious talent, at fourteen he entered the High School of Music and Art in New York, and subsequently studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Cooper Union, the Berlin Academy, and the University of Pennsylvania. A Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship enabled him to travel, study and further develop in Europe. After his return to the United States, Witkin received a Guggenheim Fellowship, began exhibiting at galleries in New York and joined the faculty of the Maryland Institute College of Art. He later taught at the Manchester College of Art in England, Moore College of Art, and in 1971 became a professor of art at Syracuse University.
Witkin's work can be thought of as an interrelationship of three bold explorations: 1) The creation of realistic pictorial form with painterly gestures strongly influenced by his desire to absorb and surmount abstract expressionism. 2) The deep implications of the death of his father. 3) Visually complex "realist" denunciations of major human rights issues.

On September 14 is the birthday of

Peter Lely, English portrait painter, born in Soest, Westphalia, in 1618, whose real name was Pieter van der Faes. He was trained as an artist in Haarlem, Netherlands.
In 1641 he settled in London, and soon after was commissioned to portray the main characters of the English court.
Charles II appointed him court painter in 1661 and knighted in 1680.
His painting, especially rich in colorful robes portrayed elegant, has a clear influence of Anthony van Dyck. Fine series of paintings of Windsor (1660s) is located in the palace of Hampton Court, London. Another series, called Admirals, is preserved in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.
He died in 1680.

On September 15 is the birthday of

Lacy Duarte, Uruguayan visual artist born in Mataojo, Salto, in 1937. She died in 2015.
More images and information in previous post.

On September 16 is the birthday of

Shen Jiawei (沈嘉蔚), Chinese Australian painter born in 1948 in Shanghai. He is a winner of the 2006 Sir John Sulman Prize.
He emigrated to Australia in 1989. He was largely self-taught and became popular with the Chinese government for his 'revolutionary' images of workers and soldiers. His best known work from that period, "Standing Guard for Our Great Motherland" (1974) was subsequently shown in the Guggenheim Museum, both in New York and Bilbao, in the China: 5000 Years exhibition, 1998.
In 1995 Shen won the Mary MacKillop Art Award and received a medal from Pope John Paul II. He is now one of Australia’s leading portrait artists known for the academic and literary qualities of his works.
Shen is also a painter of large-scale history pictures represented in major public collections; including the National Art Gallery of China and the Museum of the Chinese Revolution in Beijing. His more playful works examine political and cross-cultural issues through appropriation. "Absolute Truth" (2000) shows Mikhail Gorbachev and the Pope conversing in the Sistine Chapel and in "Wise Men from the East" (2002) the Magi in Leonardo da Vinci's unfinished Adoration of the Magi are Chinese sages.
He was an Archibald Prize finalist in 2011, 2012 and 2015.

Today, September 17, is the birthday of

Lado Tevdoradze (ლადო თევდორაძე), Georgian painter born in Tbilisi in 1957
He studied at the Toidze Art School and The State Academy of Art in Tbilisi. His paintings have been exhibited throughout Europe and in Russia and several are held in private collections throughout the world (Germany, France, Greece, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, England, Poland, Austria, India, Netherlands, Italy, Turkey, Finland, Spain, and Georgia)
Between 1998 and 2005 he painted the St. Nicholas Church at Narikala Fortress along with David Khidasheli, and the same year the Jvari Patiosani Church at Akhme.
