Amazonas / Amazones - "Amazona II / Amazon II"

"Tulipanes papagayo y vasija de porcelana de Delft c.1700 /
Parrot Tulips in Delftware Vase c.1700"

"Gato con gorguera blanca VII / Cat with White Collar VII"

"Quesos / Cheeses"

Amazonas / Amazones - "Pensamientos silenciosos / Silent Thoughts"

"Gato con gorguera blanca V / Cat with White Collar V"

"El catador / The Taster"

"Chico con gorguera blanca II / Boy With White Collar II"

Marie Cécile Thijs is a photographer born in 1965 in Heerlen, Netherlands.
Originally a lawyer, the artist decided more than fifteen years ago to follow her love for the camera. She is specialised in staged photography, and created the series White Collar, Food Portraits, Flowers & Vases, Majestic and Human Angels, which are still in progress to this day. She also made many portraits of writers, politicians, designers and artists.
Her series have been published in several media, and her work has repeatedly received international acclaim and is included in the collections of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Museum of Photographic Arts San Diego (MOPA), the National Museum of History and Art in Luxembourg (Mnha), the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond (VMFA) and many public and private art collections. She published several books, most recent Characters (2013) en Food Portraits (2015).
Marie Cécile Thijs had her first retrospective in Museum aan het Vrijthof Maastricht in 2015.

"Hinojo y pájaro / Fennel and Bird"

"Gato con gorguera blanca II / Cat with White Collar II"

The lighting, staging and styling of characters in her photographs refers to the Old Dutch Golden Age Masters. In a first sight you could think that in fact there are paintings. There's a great sobriety and purity in each image. As Marie said: "I love the use of light, the so called claire obscure. But I'm also utterly fascinated by the contrast between the sobriety of that era and the drama and mystery. They managed to depict even wealth in an earthy, nearly minimalist way."
Whether the subject is a still life, a human or animal portrait, or any other disposition with different elements, one can find more or less subtle touches of surrealism that turn those compositions impregnated with classicism into undoubtedly contemporary images.

"Niña con gorguera blanca y lengua / Girl with White Collar & Tongue"

Retratos de alimentos / Food Portraits - "Cítrico y vidrio / Citrus & Glass"

A series with culinary portraits of food. Tranquil and yet dynamic and slightly surrealistic, affecting the essence of food. Like pink oyster mushrooms under a bell jar, storm in glasses of water, distilled Umami and artichoke dripping in oil. There are also pictures showing terroir, chanterelles growing on bread, weighted seabass in salt and bleeding beetroot.

Jumping Tulip & Two Vases of Chinese Porcelain c.1700"

«I started photography when I was eleven years old. As a young girl, I was already caught by the magic of the process. I wandered the streets with my camera, a wonderful way to
follow my curiosity. During my years at university, I didn't photograph much, but it was always in the back of my mind. During my late twenties, when I was a lawyer, I rediscovered the camera and started a new life as a photographer. You could say that it was love at first and second sight.»

Amazonas / Amazones - "Chica con dragón barbado / Girl with the Bearded Dragon"

"Black Jack"

«The magic of photography is that the illusion you create seems 'real'; it makes the viewer believe that it could really happen. I love to create parallel worlds, the kind of realities
that awaken, the moment you fall asleep. When looking at my portraits, you might get a strange feeling that my portraits are watching you.»

«I’m open to what’s happening in the moment. That’s the benefit of photography—you’re working with the ‘moment.’ I work towards that dynamic moment, where everything falls together. When I reach that, when that moment arrives, that’s when I know the composition is complete.»

"Flores, aves y vasijas / Flowers, Birds & Vases"

A surrealistic look at birds and flowers, combined with authentic 17th century Delftware and modern vases.

"Pollo, libro y vegetales / Chicken, Book and Vegetables"

«My real role models were painters: 17th century ones like Rembrandt, our national pride. But also, Velázquez, Rafaël and Caravaggio. And when it comes to modern art, I have always thought Francis Bacon is absolutely phenomenal. He is a master of abstraction, and al though his paintings make you feel slightly uncomfortable, they have a staggering beauty, especially when you see them in real life.»
She didn't study art history in school, but raised in Limburg, the southernmost part of the Netherlands—an area with a rich history of visual art—she was surrounded by art history from a young age and grew up in a house full of books about the Old Masters and modern art. «I don’t know what it was, but when I started to make photographs, I had a great connection with these old painters. Later, when I began doing portraiture, I started to study them on my own, and I felt a strong connection.»

"Chico con gorguera blanca I / Boy With White Collar I"

"White Collar" is a project of Marie Cécile Thijs, which she started in 2009. The models are 'wearing' a 17th-century antique ruff collar that belongs to the collection of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Because this collar is so delicate and rare, it was photographed by Marie Cécile Thijs - separately and under special conditions - in the Rijksmuseum and was later digitally added to the models.
