Trover

The idea came to him after learning that Scioto is from the Shawnee American Indian word for “hairy water.”
Shawnee Indians named the river after migrating from the Carolinas to find deer hair floating in the river. Trover

On May 7 is the birthday of

Terry Allen, American country music singer, painter, and conceptual artist born in 1943 in Wichita, Kansas.
Allen attended Monterey High School in Lubbock, Texas. Trained as an architect, he received a B.F.A. from the Chouinard Art Institute in 1966. "Naturaleza humana / Humannature"
Instalción de dos esculturas de bronze / Installation of two bronze sculptures
Tamaño natural / lifesize, 1991-92
Oliver Ranch (Sonoma County, California, EE.UU./ USA).

In 1991-1992 Allen created his sculptural installation humanature for Oliver Ranch. The installation consists of 2 life-size figures, one male and one female, originally carved in clay, from which a plaster cast was made, followed by a single unique casting in bronze. The female figure is attached to a boulder into which her head disappears. As she bends down, she kicks up her high heels and her skirt flares out behind her. The headless male figure is leaning against a tree and has a concrete foundation. His necktie is askew and his shirt hangs loose as his pants are bunched up at his feet. They are affixed in place and unintelligible voices emanate from the trees near the two. Allen symbolizes the all-too-human trait of "turning a deaf ear", or burying the head to avoid the obvious.

On May 8 is the birthday of

Peter Anton von Verschaffelt, Flemish sculptor and architect born in 1710 in Ghent.
After his apprentice years in Ghent in the workshop of his grandfather, Verschaffelt worked in Brussels, Paris and, from 1737 to 1751, in Rome. In 1748, he received the commission to replace the damaged statue of the archangel Michael on the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, although it wasn’t installed until 1753.
In 1752 Verschaffelt moved to London. From there, he was appointed as a successor to the sculptor Paul Egell as court sculptor to Charles Theodore, Elector of the Palatinate, in Mannheim, Germany. Among his first tasks was the landscaping and statuary in the palace garden of Schwetzingen, for which he created the deer and the group of rivers, which are the key features of the park.

On May 9 is the birthday of

Terry Roger Adkins, American artist born in 1953 in Washington, D.C. into a musical household: his father, Robert H. Adkins, a chemistry and science teacher and Korean War veteran, sang and played the organ; his mother, Doris Jackson, a nurse, was an amateur clarinetist and pianist.
As a young man, Adkins planned to be a musician, but in college he found himself drawn increasingly to visual art. Mentored by Aaron Douglas and Martin Puryear, he earned a B.S. in printmaking from Fisk University in Nashville, followed by an M.S. in the field from Illinois State University and an M.F.A. in sculpture from the University of Kentucky.
Adkins was an interdisciplinary artist whose practice included sculpture, performance, video, and photography. His artworks were often inspired by, dedicated to, or referred to musicians or musical instruments; specific installations and exhibitions were sometimes labeled "recitals." Sometimes, these arrangements of sculptures were "activated" in performances by Adkins' collaborative performance group, the Lone Wolf Recital Corps.

Many of his works draw from the biographies of little known historical figures; his 2011 exhibition Nutjuitok (Polar Star) is based on the life of a black Arctic explorer named Matthew Henson who reached the North Pole with Robert Peary at the turn of the 20th century. In other cases, Adkins' works focus on obscure details in the lives of seminal figures such as the African American writer, activist and sociologist W.E.B. Du Bois, whose famous speech "Socialism and the American Negro" (1960) is invoked in the 2003-2008 installation Darkwater Record.
Adkins' work has been exhibited at museums and galleries worldwide
He died in 2014.

On May 10 is the birthday of

Antoni Kurzawa, Polish sculptor born in 1842 in Turzy.
He came from a poor peasant family, he was the son of Franciszka Kurzawa and, as shown in the documents of the School of Fine Arts in Vienna, son of a shepherd. His studies at the School of Fine Arts in Krakow were made possible by Mieczysław Weryha-Darowski. In the years 1863-1869 he studied sculpture in the studio of Henryk Kossowski and drawing under the direction of Władysław Łuszczkiewicz. In 1867-1868 he studied in Vienna. Then he stayed briefly in Lviv, where he carved at least four tombstones for the Lychakiv Cemetery. In 1874 he was re-enrolled at the School of Fine Arts in Krakow and was removed for insulting Professor Kossowski. In the years 1876-1877 he completed studies in Paris.

His sculptures were full of expression and dynamism. He carved religious statues of a naturalistic form, eg Christ and Magdalena from 1864, Samson's Struggle Against the Lion from 1865, Judah's Kiss from 1867, portrait busts, figural, mythological and symbolic compositions as Wawel and Wisła from 1878, Genius breaking ties from 1874, generic: Oberek, Mazur, Polonez, Siewca from 1896. He was also the author of an unused project of the monument of Adam Mickiewicz submitted for the competition in Krakow.
The masterwork of Kurzawa is the sculptural group Mickiewicz arousing the genius of poetry, whose prototype was created in 1889. The work was sent in the same year for the annual competition of the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Confident of victory, he broke down after the verdict of the jury, awarding him the third place. The first prize was not awarded. In January 1890 he made a desperate act - he invaded the exhibition and smashed his own sculpture.
With time, Antoni Kurzawa became a symbol of the tragic fate of unappreciated artists. Physically weak, destroyed by diseases, at the end of his life he found himself on June 12, 1897 in a shelter for the poor - Zakład im. Helclów in Krakow, where he died on February, 1898.

Thorfinn Karlsefni was an Icelandic explorer who circa 1010 AD led an attempt to settle Vínland with three ships and 160 settlers. Thorfinn's wife gave birth to a boy in Vínland, the first child of European descent known to have been born in the New World. Wikipedia

On May 11 is the birthday of

Einar Jónsson, Icelandic sculptor, born in 1874 in Galtafell, a farm in southern Iceland.
At a young age Einar proved himself to be an unusual child with an artistic bent. At that time there was little or no tradition of sculpture in Iceland, so Einar moved to Denmark where he attended the Copenhagen Academy of Art. In 1902 the Althing, the Icelandic parliament, awarded Einar a grant to study in Rome for 2 years. He returned from Rome to Copenhagen and settled down there. According to The Einar Jónsson Museum in Reykjavik, after residing in Rome:
"Jónsson completely rejected naturalistic depiction and publicly criticized the classical art tradition, which he felt had weighed artists down. He emphasized the need for artists to forge their own path and cultivate their originality and imagination instead of following the footsteps of others. His ideas were related to German symbolism, and he developed a figurative language composed of interpretable symbols, personification and allegory."

In 1909, after living abroad for almost 20 years he made an arrangement with the Althing to provide him with a home and studio in Reykjavík. In return, he agreed to donate all his works to the country. Einar designed this combination living and working space in collaboration with Architect Einar Erlendsson.
In 1914 Einar was awarded a commission by Joseph Bunford Samuel to create a statue of Icelandic explorer Þorfinnur Karlsefni (Thorfinn Karlsefni) for placement in Philadelphia. Bunford commissioned the sculpture through a bequest that his wife, Ellen Phillips Samuel, made to the Fairmount Park Art Association (now the Association for Public Art), specifying that the funds were to be used to create a series of sculptures “emblematic of the history of America.” Thorfinn Karlsefni (1915–1918) was installed along Philadelphia's Kelly Drive near the Samuel Memorial and unveiled on November 20, 1920. There is another casting of the statue in Reykjavík, Iceland.

In 1917, the day after he married Anne Marie Jørgensen, he and his bride travelled to the United States to complete the work, and today Einar's intrepid Norseman stands on East River Drive in Philadelphia. Several years later, in 1921, his second major North American work was erected when the Icelandic community in Manitoba, Canada purchased a casting of his Jón Sigurðsson statue and had it placed in the Manitoba Legislative Building grounds in Winnipeg. As with the version in Reykjavík, this statue included the bas relief The Pioneers on the base.
After two years in America, Einar returned to Iceland where he produced an amazing body of work, none of it seen outside the country. Unlike most other sculptors, Einar worked almost entirely in plaster. This had to do partly with the lack of good modeling clay in Iceland, but it allowed Einar to work on his individual sculptures for years. Spending over a decade on a particular piece was not uncommon for him.
He died in 1974.

His art objects are often highly formalized with abstractive features. This often contradicted the SED (Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands / Socialist Unity Party of Germany) style of Socialist Realism. At the end of the 1960s, Rudolf Sitte twice won the competition for a mural at the Palace of Culture of the City of Dresden. However, his proposals did not find the approval of the SED and the order was finally awarded to Gerhard Bondzin.
Rudolf Sitte worked until 1990 in a small studio. Since the 1990s, they lived with his wife in Königsbrück. With the use of his assets, he fought fruitlessly for unemployed young people and for the preservation and development of a listed ceramic factory in Königsbrück against privatization and plunder to ruin.
Until the end, Sitte remained true to his beliefs and was active in public.
He died in 2009.
