Mitch Griffiths [Pintura]

Mitch Griffiths is a Master of figurative painting today. His works have it all: a highly refined technical quality, personal and profound vision of contemporary reality and an unmistakable style.

Mitch Griffiths

"Consumo / Consumption", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 122 x 92 cm., 2008

"Todo ha cambiado y nada ha cambiado / Everything Has Changed and Nothing Has Changed"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 4' x 3', 2004

"Enviando un mensaje: Sé mi esposa / Sending Message: Be My Wife"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 185 x 240 cm.

Managed to paint this in secret and propose to my wonderful wife in front of this when it was exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery.

"Glamurexica / Glamourexic", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 137 x 108 cm., 2008

"Puente de genes / Bridge of Genes", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 145 x 109 cm.

Mitch Griffiths was born in Nuneaton in 1971 and had an early passion for drawing that was fostered by his school, which he represented in various art competitions. Planning for a career in art, he enrolled at South Devon College, completing a Diploma in Graphic Design in 1987. This was followed by a Higher National Diploma in Illustration at Southampton Institute. His initial work as a commercial illustrator, on projects that ranged from magazine covers to murals, was supplemented by a variety of temporary jobs, such as sheet metal work, which brought in more reliable income.

Mitch uses a traditional, almost forgotten style of painting, inspired by the light and composition of Old Master paintings, but he uses this style to depict the issues concerning 21st-century British society. His main subject is the transient and throwaway nature of contemporary culture, which is held in stark contrast to the permanence and indelibility of oil paint on canvas.

«I’m very interested in iconography, its rules, its symbolism and interpretation.
All advertising, promotion and entertainment are iconography, designed to instil reverence for the product/person. As our belief grows for a product or person it becomes more powerful, gains more followers and are worshipped by the actions of these followers.»

«What I manage to put on the canvas is normally about 10% of what I have in my mind. The process of creating a work is a tightrope between small victories and crushing frustrations. Again, this goes right from the concept stage, setting out models and compositions to putting the paint on the canvas. I have a very bi-polar relationship to my work.»

"La musa ha muerto / The Muse is Dead", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 110 x 90 cm., 2007

"Bob Geldof", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 4' x 3', 2011

«It was in 1995 when I first really attempted to paint with acrylics. Trial and error guided me but, I was usually successful in what I attempted. By 2003 I had made the transition to oils. Many people say my paintings look photo-realist at times. I take it as a compliment but, it's not what I'm trying to achieve. A realist painting, any piece of realist art has to contain a soul, an organic quality. Technique must never overpower emotion or message. I'm not trying to make my work look real; I'm trying to make the viewer enter MY reality.»

«Mitch Griffiths: The dictionary definition of patriotic is “to be inspired by the love of your country". So yes, I would say I'm that. There are things I truly love about this country but there are also things that I'm ashamed of. For example, the idea of this little island having built a global empire is a double-edged sword. Particularly when you think of the means by which that empire was carved and at what cost to others.»

«Art can be a medium for escape and take you on wonderful journeys, for both artist and viewer. However, it must have the resonance of reality to truly connect (and I don’t mean realist; It can be any style, any medium). There needs to be gravitas. The best work is monumental, not ornamental.»
