A few days ago I had the opportunity to enjoy a sample of the works of Laura San Segundo, specifically from her series "Half-Open Being". I was struck by the purity of the images and that dual presentation in which the analogies, more or less evident depending on the case, play a key role and are a constant in her work. Portraits with a minimalist staging, with flat and uniform backgrounds in which the really important thing are the sitters, often the artist herself, usually with their back to the camera, and rarely looking at the viewer. A pleasant discovery that thanks to the kindness of Laura I share with all of you today.

«Siberia has a wide region that is permanently frozen, and at the same time owns numerous active volcanoes, like if it was a battle field where everything actually occurs in silence.
These photographs were taken after a particularly unhappy time, shortly after I graduated. A sense of lost, loneliness and alienation marked this period of time and made me question and push myself with no clear results. Days of apparently calm were followed by days of extreme feelings. This series tries to reflect that state of containment that precedes the moment of emotional explosion, a state of suspension where contradictory and opposing ideas converge.
The photography process, in the same way, and especially self-portraiture –beyond the representation of the physical appearance- works as a cathartic fact, as it can be addressed as a way of introspection, observation and analysis that concludes and liberates, registering a phase that finally comes to an end.»

«Throughout six months, visual artist Alejandro Cinque dyed his hair in different colours, documenting every change in images that I used after as the starting point to create other photographs in dialogue with the first ones. The resulting work is a series of six diptychs in which the conventional genres are twisted: the portrait becomes still-life and vice versa. Traditionally, a portrait is understood as an image of the face; but in this case, those who face the viewer are the vegetables, while the person doesn’t show the face in favour of a neutral and objectifying approach. This way, both images dissolve in each other in terms of genre as well as they do it chromatically.»

«"Grey" is a body of work articulated through chromatic connections, resulted from random walks in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Tokyo. In those places where I do not belong (as an outsider), I decide not to focus on what is considered representative (the monuments), focusing instead in the numerous small actions and objects that reveal the human energy contained in a city. The urban space, compared to the idealized natural landscape, can be grey, made of asphalt and concrete, but also a grey that is, as in painting, the result of all colours together.»

"The Half-Open Being" (2016) is a series of photographs suggested after reading The Poetics of Space (1957) by Gaston Bachelard, a book in which the author reflects on the house from a psychological viewpoint, understanding it as a topography of our being and as an instrument to analyse the human being and his relationship with the world. Therefore,he argues, we should not talk of the house as an object, but as a being. The specular relationship between human body and soul and architecture was the starting point for this project, based around a play of parallels and projections between spaces and people, in which both sides are represented as structures housing an inner space, accessible only through closing and opening mechanisms, contemplating the possibility for those structures to be an isolated block or frame, but, as Bachelard said, also a space inhabited by the universe, a mist.

«My interest in studio and still-life photography has always coped with a lack of space, as I do not own a defined working place. As a result, my photography is conditioned by what I normally use as improvised studios -my bed and my desk, feeling sometimes forced to use just small things.»

Adriaen Thomasz.

Adriaen Thomasz. Key was a painter of Antwerp born c. 1544, a pupil of Willem Key, a distant relative.
Key's work in the 1570s reveals considerable similarities with that of his teacher. While he made altarpieces for several churches in Antwerp, he was known above all as a portrait painter. Characteristic of his early portraits is the objective depiction of the subject. In his later work he placed increasing emphasis on the status of the subject, often prominent Antwerp burghers. After the Sack of Antwerp by the Spaniards in 1585, the Calvinist Key remained in his native town, although many of his fellow Protestants fled north.
He died after 1589.
