Johann Friedrich Grooth (Иоганн Фридрих Гроо́т) was a German painter born in 1717 in Stuttgart.
He was the son of Johann Christoph Grooth (1688-1764), court painter to the Duke of Württemberg and curator of the ducal picture gallery. He learned painting from his father and other masters in Ludwigsburg and Dresden. In 1739-1740 he lived and worked in Vienna.
In 1741 he emigrated with his brother to Reval at the invitation of General Ulrich von Löwendal, who was in Russian service. In 1742 he became restorer of the imperial collections of paintings in St. Petersburg. In 1749, after the death of his brother, Grooth was appointed court painter (until 1761).
Tsarina Elisabeth loved hunting and the depiction of hunting scenes and of game and domestic animals. Grooth painted a large number of such paintings on her behalf. Each new work was visited by the entire court. In 1765, 41 paintings were transferred to the newly founded St. Petersburg Art Academy, where they formed the "Grooth Gallery". At the end of the 19th century there was only one picture left (wild birds). Many other paintings by Grooth are to be found in Gattschina Castle.
In 1765 Grooth was accepted into the Academy of Arts as an academic and assigned the painting class. In 1766 he became a consultant and in 1774 an honorary member of the Academy. He was the leading teacher of animal painting and had many pupils, including Mikhail Ivanov. In 1775 Grooth's pupil Karl Friedrich Knappe took over the painting class.
He died in 1801.

Henriëtte Ronner-Knip was a Dutch-Belgian artist in the Romantic style born in 1821 in Amsterdam, who is best known for her animal paintings, especially cats.
She received her first lessons from her father, Josephus Augustus Knip, who also gave lessons to her aunt (his youngest sister), Henriëtte Geertruida Knip. His father, Nicolaas (1741–1808), was an artist as well.
The family moved often as her father found work giving lessons. But, by 1823 her father was already blind in one eye. After he became totally blind in 1832, the family continued to move about, staying for a short time in The Hague, then Beek and 's-Hertogenbosch before settling in Berlicum in 1840. By this time, she was essentially in charge of the family's finances and legal obligations, and had begun painting seriously by 1835. She was a participant in the Exhibition of Living Masters in 1838.

After the dead of Cornelia, her father's wife, she moved to Amsterdam where she painted farms, animals and forests from nature, first in watercolor, then in oils. That same year, she became the first woman admitted as an "active member" to Arti et Amicitiae. In 1850, she married Feico Ronner (1819-1883) and they moved to Brussels. He was often ill and could not be regularly employed, so he became her manager. At this time, she narrowed her subject matter, focusing almost entirely on dogs and cats. After 1870, she painted her most famous works, featuring long-haired, often playful cats in bourgeois settings. She continued to paint dogs too; notably lapdogs belonging to Marie Henriette of Austria and Princess Marie of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. Ronner-Knip exhibited her work at the Palace of Fine Arts at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois.
In her later years, she had a house with a large garden, where she kept hunting dogs, cats and a parrot that she used as models. After observing them in her studio, she would make paper sculptures in the desired poses and set them together with props, such as furniture and fabrics. She occasionally collaborated with the genre artist, David Col.
In 1887, she was awarded the Order of Leopold and, in 1901, became a member of the Order of Orange-Nassau. Her son Alfred and daughters Alice and Emma also became artists. She often exhibited with them.
She died in 1909.

Ingrid Manzione
(Wiesbaden, Alemania / Germany)

«Most of my paintings have figures in them. They are portraits. Portraits of our lives. The people are you, me, the guy walking down the street, anyone. My home is filled with paintings that have people in them and the majority, if not all of the work, is not of anyone that I know. So why paint people? For one thing, one can never be bored or run out of material. It’s endless. I love watching people!»
Besides people, Ingrid also likes to portray animals, like these.

Alice Wellinger
(Lustenau, Austria)

Alice Wellinger is an Austrian based painter and illustrator.
Her personal art is surreal, ironic, dealing with the troubles of daily life and childhood memories.
“I always try to tell a little story in my pictures - I like when people have something to think about.”
Wellinger considers herself a "self-taught" author, dedicated to illustration as a vehicle for creative "freedom", and for some years now she has been working on commission drawing children's books (the Austrian's Children's Book Prizes have awarded her work). Affable and vitalist, she remembers that she began to dedicate herself to this public after giving birth to her twins. In the pages she illustrates, Wellinger lets you glimpse her "childhood memories" without "planning anything beforehand," but rather with her mind "open to ideas that come spontaneously," she says. When it comes to personal works, born of her own will, the illustrator dumps all her ironic charge to tackle in her own way what she defines as "our daily life". El Pais Blog

Marvin Mattelson

Marvin Mattelson is an American oil portrait painter who draws on over thirty-five years of professional experience as an artist and educator. Nine of Marvin’s paintings are included in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution. The Metropolitan Museum of Art recently acquired one of his paintings for their permanent collection. His portraits hang in both private and corporate collections around the world.
Prior to becoming a full time portrait painter, Marvin was an award-winning illustrator.
After receiving his BFA from the Philadelphia College of Art, Marvin embarked on the long road to discover the knowledge that he felt was so evident in the work of the old masters. He is most indebted to John Frederick Murray, a student of the late Frank Reilly, for his insights into the academic painting process and his great encouragement. Through Reilly's teacher George A. Bridgeman, Marvin traces his artistic heritage back through the Ecole des Beaux-Arts where 19th Century academic stalwarts, such as Jean Leon Gerome and William Bouguereau, were revered instructors. Gerome studied with Paul DeLaroche, who in turn had studied under Jacques Louis David; Gerome's artistic progeny include Americans Thomas Eakins, Dennis Miller Bunker and William McGregor Paxton, as well as George Bridgeman.
