Hoy les presento las alegres y coloridas piezas de la artista lituana Inga Šimonytė-Deniz, quien utilizando la acuarela en combinación con otras técnicas construye narrativas en las que los animales son los protagonistas. En cada una de sus originales creaciones llenas de humor e ironía, se revelan su creatividad, imaginación y solvencia como dibujante desarrollada gracias a su formación en arquitectura.
Today I present to you the cheerful and colorful pieces of the Lithuanian artist Inga Šimonytė-Deniz, who using watercolor in combination with other techniques builds narratives in which animals are the protagonists. In each of her original creations full of humor and irony, her creativity, imagination and drawing expertise developed thanks to her training in architecture are revealed.

Inga es una arquitecta lituana nacida en Kaunas, que desde hace más de doce años reside en Ankara, Turquía.
En los últimos tiempos ha venido desarrollando una interesante propuesta artística basada en la acuarela. Utiliza una técnica poco habitual, complementado la acuarela con grafito, tinta, pan de oro y pintura, lo hace de sus piezas algo singular.
Los temas principales de sus pinturas son los animales, pero representándolos en actitudes, posiciones y situaciones inesperadas. Puedes encontrar una vaca sobre una máquina de tejer, un perro equilibrando una balanza sobre su cabeza, o un hipopótamo en traje de baño duchándose.
"Probablemente no sé pintar normalmente, o no quiero. Creo mi propio mundo, dominado por diferentes cánones, diferente gravedad. Es extraño, pero me gusta vivir en él."

"Siempre me ha gustado dibujar. Si no dibujaba, disfrutaba viendo a otros hacerlo. Empecé a pintar con acuarela durante mis años de estudiante. No asistí a ningún curso, salvo a las conferencias de dibujo en los años de estudios de arquitectura, donde, lamentablemente, nadie me enseñó a pintar con acuarelas. Dibujábamos con grafito, sobre todo detalles arquitectónicos, bustos clásicos y algunos desnudos. La acuarela fue un puro deseo y una elección personal, una técnica que aprendo por mí misma."
En sus pinturas no aparecen los típicos derrames de la acuarela, sino capas, y un dibujo muy preciso y definido. "Tenía muchas ganas de que mis trabajos se destacaran en algo para que pudieras reconocerlos al mirarlos. Por tanto, la trama y la idea de la imagen son muy importantes."

"Los animales son muy expresivos y se pueden transmitir mucho a través de ellos", reflexiona Inga, para quien los ojos y la nariz del perro representan amistad y apego, y ve a los gatos (sobre todo los esfinge, que son los que más le gustan porque parecen "extraterrestres"), un símbolo de paz, curiosidad e independencia.
"También me fascinan los artículos vintage. Me hace especialmente feliz pintarlos. Tienen su propia historia, detalles interesantes que en sí mismos crean una narrativa. Pinté una antigua plancha a principios de primavera, pero tuve que esperar hasta el fin del verano para poder encontrarle un 'compañero' adecuado. Me refiero a una imagen llamada 'Día libre' (ver más abajo) en la que un gato esfinge está sentado sobre una plancha abierta y bosteza dulcemente."

Sus piezas resultan visualmente muy llamativas, pero sin perder la sensiblidad plástica. En ellas se narran pequeñas historias, y cada una tiene su propio significado. Son obras luminosas y alegres en las que el humor juega un papel clave.
"Mis últimos trabajos son optimistas, llenos de sarcasmo y humor" comenta Inga. "Las historias se han vuelto irónicas. Me burlo de mí misma y de los demás. Me di cuenta de que el humor es tan necesario como el aire, el agua y el pan."

Hasta la fecha Inga ha presentado su obra en dos exposiciones. La primera de ellas en el verano del 2019 en su ciudad natal, Kaunas. La otra en Ankara, donde reside.
"Cuando comencé a pintar, me interesé por los artistas de aquí. Al principio, tenía la opinión de que en Turquía el arte se limita a la caligrafía árabe o las pinturas kitsch. Me sorprendió gratamente encontrar artistas que crean con formas de expresión inusuales. Aquí hay algunas personas y artistas increíbles que han influido en mi trabajo. Yonca Karakaş, por ejemplo, es una increíble fotógrafa de Estambul. Rukiye Garip, quien hace fantásticas acuarelas realistas. Sidaras Baki que representa espacios arquitectónicos peculiares. Esa gente me inspira mucho."

Inga is a Lithuanian architect born in Kaunas, who has been living in Ankara, Turkey for more than twelve years.
In recent times she has been developing an interesting artistic proposal based on watercolor. She uses an unusual technique of complementing watercolor with graphite, ink, gold leaf and paint, giving it its uniqueness.
The main subjects of her paintings are the animals, but depicting them in unexpected attitudes, positions and situations. You can find a cow on a knitting machine, a dog balancing a scale on its head, or a Sphynx cat yawning inside an ancient iron.
"I probably don't know how to paint normally, or don't want to. I create my own world, dominated by different canons, different gravity. It's strange, but I like living in it."

"I have always liked to draw. If I didn't draw, I enjoyed watching others do it. I started painting with watercolor during my student years. I didn't attend any courses, except the drawing conferences in the years of architectural studies, where, unfortunately, nobody taught me to paint with watercolors. We drew with graphite, especially architectural details, classical busts and some nudes. Watercolor was a pure desire and a personal choice, a technique I learn by myself".
In her paintings there are not the typical spills of watercolor, but layers, and a very precise and defined drawing. "I really wanted my works to stand out in something so you could recognize them by looking at them. Therefore, the plot and the idea of the image are very important".

"Animals are very expressive and you can transmit a lot through them," reflects Inga, for whom the dog's eyes and nose represent friendship and attachment, and she sees cats (especially sphinxes, which she likes the most because they look like "aliens"), a symbol of peace, curiosity and independence.
"I am also fascinated by vintage items. I am especially happy to paint them. They have their own story, interesting details that in themselves create a narrative. I painted an old iron in early spring, but I had to wait until the end of the summer to find a suitable 'partner' for him. I refer to an image called Day Off (see above) in which a sphynx cat sits on an open iron and yawns sweetly".

Her pieces are visually very striking, but without losing their plastic sensibility. They tell little stories, and each one has its own meaning. They are luminous and happy works in which humor plays a key role.
"My latest works are optimistic, full of sarcasm and humour" says Inga. "The stories have become ironic. I make fun of myself and others. I realized that humor is as necessary as air, water and bread.

To date Inga has presented her work in two exhibitions. The first one in the summer of 2019 in her hometown, Kaunas. The other in Ankara, where she lives.
"When I started painting, I became interested in the artists here. At first, I was of the opinion that in Turkey art is limited to Arabic calligraphy or kitsch paintings. I was pleased to find artists who create with unusual forms of expression. Here are some amazing people and artists who have influenced my work. Yonca Karakaş, for example, is an amazing photographer from Istanbul. Rukiye Garip, who makes fantastic realistic watercolors. Sidaras Baki who represents architectural spaces peculiar. These people inspire me a lot."
