«Me echaron de la Escuela de Fotografía después de un mes, así que no hay instrucción formal, todo es autodidacta. Realmente creo que la auto-enseñanza es la mejor manera de aprender. La fotografía es arte. No pueden decirte qué ver y cómo verlo; necesitas tus propios ojos para eso. Comercialmente, para abreviar, estaba tomando fotos en mi antiguo negocio para anunciarme (Pesca con mosca) y a una revista de pesca en la que puse el anuncio le encantó la fotografía, y terminó contratándome para fotografiar para ellos por encargo. Esto duró unos 4 o 5 años, hasta que hice mi primera sesión fotográfica en el estudio. Me enamoré al tener el control sobre la iluminación y mis modelos. Arriesgué todo al hacer el cambio de la fotografía de estilo de vida a la fotografía de moda.
No me di cuenta de lo que realmente sabía sobre la moda y lo mucho que la entendía. El hecho de ver las portadas de las revistas y hojear Vogue parecía haberse incrustado en mi memoria, y es lo que me ayudó a "entender" la moda.» (2)

"Me inspiro en todas partes: en las películas, en las noticias, en Internet, en los sonidos. Hay inspiración en todas partes; algo me inspira un pensamiento y a partir de ahí creo una imagen basada en ese pensamiento que tuve, que fue creado por la letra de una canción, o algo en las noticias. Incluso ver a dos personas llevando flores por la calle me inspiró para hacer una sesión, que todavía no he hecho. No hay un lugar fijo, me inspiro mirando y escuchando el mundo". (3)

«Creo que uno de los papeles [del artista] puede ser el de complacer visualmente a otras personas, y mostrarle a la gente cosas que normalmente no verían, es decir, fotografía macro, y ese tipo de cosas, sólo cosas que no verías todos los días. Luego, en segundo lugar, y es algo que me gusta hacer, es mostrar un conjunto de cosas en una foto y dejar que la persona que la ve decida lo que realmente está pasando en ella, como cuál es la historia detrás, así que puedes empezar a ser un poco más político y promover tu moral y creencias a otras personas, gracias a algo presente en una foto que haga que la gente piense en cosas en las que de otra manera normalmente no pensarían.» (3)

«...si todos miran una foto y nadie se dice lo que está pensando, todos tendrán una historia en su cabeza, pero en cuanto la gente empiece a hablar, cambiará la historia en la cabeza de los demás. Y he visto que eso sucede en los juicios fotográficos, donde un juez en particular ha declarado que esta imagen en particular tiene un simbolismo y lo brillante que fue este fotógrafo para llegar a eso y retratarlo tan sutilmente que los otros jueces no lo vieron. Esto llevó a una foto que era apenas un bronce, a un oro. Y cuando hablé con el fotógrafo después, dijo "no, tan sólo fua una persona que pasó por delante de mí", pero ese juez hizo que todos pensaran que esa era la historia, y yo estoy un poco en contra de eso.» (3)

«I was kicked out of Photography School after one month, so no formal training, all self-taught. I truly believe that selfteaching is the best way to learn. Photography is Art, you cannot tell you what to see and how to see it; you need your own eyes for that. Commercially, long story short, I was taking photos in my old business to advertise my business (Fly Fishing) and a Fishing magazine I advertised in loved my photography and ended up booking me to shoot for them on consignment. This went on for about 4-5 years until I did my Nirst shoot in the studio. I fell in love, having control over the lighting and my subjects. I risked everything by making the change from lifestyle photography to fashion photography.
I didn’t realize what I actually knew about fashion and how much I understood it. Seeing the covers of magazines and flicking through Vogue seemed to have sunk into my memory which helped me ‘understand’ fashion.» (2)

«I just get inspiration from everywhere; I get it from movies, news, internet, sounds. There’s inspiration everywhere, something will inspire a thought and then I’ll create an image based on the thought I had that was created by words in a song, or something on the news. I even saw two people carrying flowers down the street and it inspired me to do a shoot, which I still haven’t done. There’s no set place, I get inspiration from looking and listening to the world.» (3)

«I think one of the roles [of artists] can be to visually please other people, and showing people things they normally wouldn’t see, ie macro photography, and that type of thing, just stuff you wouldn’t see everyday. Then secondary to that, and it’s something that I like doing, is showing a group of things in a photo and let the person viewing it decide on what is actually going on in that photo, like what’s the story behind it, so you can start to be a bit more political and push your morals and beliefs on other people by having something in a photo to make people think about things that they otherwise wouldn’t normally think about.» (3)

«...if everyone looks at a photo and no one tells each other what they’re thinking, everyone will have a story in their head but as soon as people start talking, you’re changing the story in someone else’s head. And I’ve seen that happen in photographic judging, where a particular judge has stated that this particular image has got symbolism and how brilliant was this photographer to come up with that and portray it so subtly that the other judges didn’t see it – this took a picture that was barely a bronze to a gold. And when I spoke to the photographer afterwards he said ‘no, that just happened to be the person who walked past me’, but that one judge made everyone think that was the story, and I’m a bit anti that.» (3)
